Ohio State-Iowa preview

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
OHIO STATE AT IOWA

4 p.m. today
? Where: Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City
? TV: Big Ten Network
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 10-3 overall, 1-1 Big Ten; Iowa 9-5, 2-1
? Matchup to watch: The Hawkeyes are a veteran team with good inside size and three legitimate three-point threats, so this is a pick-your-poison defensive game. The Buckeyes did a good job of shutting down Michigan beyond the three-point arc Thursday. Keeping Wendy Ausdemore, Kristi Smith and Johanna Solverson in check will be the next test.
? Noteworthy: Iowa upended Minnesota 68-66 in an overtime thriller Thursday in Minneapolis. Krista VandeVenter made the winning shot with 13 seconds remaining, and all five Iowa starters scored in double figures. Ausdemore and Solverson combined to hit 7 of 11 three-point shots. ... The Buckeyes won both meetings against Iowa last season and are 8-0 against the Hawkeyes under coach Jim Foster. Freshman center Jantel Lavender leads the Big Ten in rebounding (9.8 per game) and has six double-doubles in 13 games. Sophomore point guard Shavelle Little has 11 steals in her past two games. Freshman guard Alison Jackson is expected to be back in uniform today. She missed the Michigan game to clear up an academic issue.
? Next: vs. Indiana, 7 p.m. Thursday, Value City Arena

Ohio State women
Buckeyes ready to go back to work vs. a familiar foe

Sunday, January 6, 2008 4:02 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Life without academically ineligible forward Star Allen resumed for the Ohio State women's basketball team yesterday as the team prepared for its trip to Iowa City.
The news apparently caught nobody by surprise.
"You knew it was coming," coach Jim Foster said. "The team was prepared for it weeks ago."
Whatever emotional ripples remained for the 21st-ranked Buckeyes (10-3, 1-1) were lost in the preparation for today's Big Ten game against the Hawkeyes (9-5, 2-1).
Iowa sports one of the most veteran teams in the conference and what the Hawkeyes like to do is hardly a secret.
"I expect a lot of threes for the game," senior guard Marscilla Packer said. "I think we can push the ball on them a lot. They're big and I think we can beat them down the floor. But our main focus right now is to get a win on the road."

No. 21 OSU women hold off Iowa

Associated Press

Monday, January 07, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Ashlee Trebilcock scored 25 points to help No. 21 Ohio State beat Iowa 73-65 on Sunday.
Ohio State built a 17-point halftime lead, shooting 61.3 percent from the field. The Buckeyes (11-3, 2-1 Big Ten) built the lead to 19 before they had to hold off a furious Iowa rally to win their ninth straight over the Hawkeyes (9-6, 2-2).

Kachine Alexander cut the Buckeyes' lead to 6 on a layup with 4:15 remaining. Johanna Solverson drove baseline for a lay-up to slice the lead to 63-59, but Iowa wouldn't get any closer as the Buckeyes made 10 of their last 13 free throws to pull away late.
Kristi Smith led Iowa with 20 points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
OSU holds on at end
Free throws down stretch beat Iowa
Monday, January 7, 2008 12:01 AM
By Jim Massie

The Columbus Dispatch
As has been its habit this season, the lull came knocking for the Ohio State women's basketball team yesterday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but this time the 21st-ranked Buckeyes slammed the door in the face of a Big Ten rival.
Ashlee Trebilcock and Marscilla Packer combined to hit six consecutive free throws in the final 42 seconds to enable OSU to preserve a 73-65 victory over an Iowa team that had sliced a 19-point deficit to four with under a minute to play.
At the end, the Hawkeyes (9-6, 2-2) were forced to send the Buckeyes (11-3, 2-1) to the free-throw line where they could hope for misses. Trebilcock, who led OSU with a career-high 25 points, disappointed them by connecting on the first two. Packer followed with the final four to ice the win.

Ohio State's Marscilla Packer, center, goes for a loose ball against Indiana's Kim Roberson, left, and Whitney Thomas during the first half.

Early in the second half last night, trouble appeared to be brewing where trouble seldom bubbles up for the Ohio State women's basketball team.
Indiana had jumped to a seven-point lead in Value City Arena, of all places, and the Hoosiers had caught the rich aroma of a possible Big Ten upset in the making. Worry apparently didn't enter the equation for the 19th-ranked Buckeyes even before coach Jim Foster called a timeout.
"Worry? No," senior guard Marscilla Packer said. "We stopped running and pushing the ball. We were just standing and letting them do what they wanted to do. Once he called the timeout and we got refocused, we went on a run. We got right back into the game."

OSU's Shavelle Little had a big game Sunday against Iowa with six steals and 10 points.

There were moments in the first half Sunday against Iowa that allowed Ohio State sophomore point guard Shavelle Little to see what kind of team the 19th-ranked Buckeyes could become. "In the first half, I think we shook them up a little bit," Little said. "We showed them something different. In the second half, we weren't as intense in what we were doing. But we still did a pretty good job."
Ohio State surprised Iowa by opening with full-court pressure and used the fast start to work its way to a 73-65 Big Ten women's basketball victory.
"I just think that everybody is more competitive on defense," said Little, who had six steals in the win. "That little bit of intensity opens up some more opportunities. We had, like, a 20-point lead in the first half."

I haven't had a chance to see the Lady Bucks play this year yet. I've been anxious to see Ms. Lavender play ball...I'll have to step up my efforts.

Good to see they're doing well though.

College basketball: Sub gives OSU women a jolt with her energy

Monday, January 14, 2008 3:12 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the first 13 minutes of the game yesterday afternoon, Northwestern swarmed Ohio State like a hungry school of piranha would a Happy Meal tossed into a South American river. The Wildcats, winless in their first four Big Ten women's basketball games, connected on 14 of their first 16 shots from the field and built a 28-18 lead against the 19th-ranked Buckeyes.
Ohio State coach Jim Foster picked that moment to insert little-used freshman guard Alison Jackson into the game, and the Chicago native responded with her best performance of the season.

Women's basketball: Young Buckeyes developing depth
Foster starting to see improvement
Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:05 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Young basketball teams tend to spring leaks like a birch bark canoe tied up near a termite mound. If the coach isn't good at plugging the holes, a season can sink before the trip begins.
Ohio State listed for a long moment Sunday at Northwestern. Playing without injured sophomore point guard Shavelle Little, the 16th-ranked Buckeyes (13-3, 4-1) trailed the Wildcats 28-18 before a lineup adjustment by coach Jim Foster helped jettison the water.
He inserted freshman Alison Jackson and watched her ignite a 17-2 run that led to a 77-55 victory. Despite losing junior forward Star Allen to academic troubles, the Buckeyes are growing deeper as they prepare to meet Illinois (11-5, 3-2) in a Big Ten game at 7 tonight in Value City Arena.
