Ohio State's Marscilla Packer, passing under pressure from Sara Mosiman, scored 18 points.

SEATTLE -- The late spaghetti western director Sergio Leone could have scripted the women's basketball game between Ohio State and Washington last night.
Along the way to a 71-54 victory, the 19th-ranked Buckeyes (7-2) displayed something good in the first half, something bad in the second and, at times, a little bit that was downright ugly.
In its first game following a two-week layoff, Ohio State built a 45-21 halftime lead behind withering inside performances from Jantel Lavender and Star Allen. In the second half, Washington coach Tia Jackson used multiple substitutions and full-court pressure to rattle the Buckeyes into 15 turnovers.
The win pleased Buckeyes coach Jim Foster. The play in the second half didn't.

the 3 top seniors from ohio in USA TODAY'S top 25 ,are going elsewere. You would think landing freshmen Lavender. would have helped Fosters recruiting for this class.
Especially Dunning from Eastmoor Academy in Columbus. She is one of the top forwards in the country. He did get a Pete Marovich type PG from New York, New York. I don't think he had many scholarships to give out... not sure but don't think there are many seniors on this team.

the thing I like about those rankings of basketball players all over the country is that they play against eachother/or teamed up in those summer/holiday tournaments. So its easier to tell who has the talent .

Andrea Walker

Sophomore center Andrea Walker turned from a tourist into an Ohio State women's basketball player Sunday at Washington after a surprise wave of the hand from coach Jim Foster. Out for the past five months after surgery on her right foot, Walker logged three minutes in the 71-54 win for the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (7-2).
"I didn't even know I was getting into the game," she said. "They just told me to get ready. It was really nice to get back on the court.
"I'm not 100 percent yet. I've been practicing the past two weeks. But I'm getting back into it."

Shavelle Little steals the ball from Youngstown State's Kelsey Gurganus, one of six for the sophomore.

Shavelle Little still is learning to pick her spots when picking the pocket of an opposing point guard.
The Ohio State sophomore had six steals last night in Value City Arena to spark the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (8-2) to an 84-50 victory over Youngstown State in a women's basketball game.
Little ended the first half by stripping Penguins point guard Lauren Branson of the ball. The play allowed Ashlee Trebilcock to score and give the Buckeyes a 37-25 halftime lead.
The scene of the crime was similar to the opening of the second half when Little took the ball away from Kelsey Gurganus. Little scored this time on a breakaway layup that helped ignite a 17-2 OSU run.

Women's basketball: OSU threesome honing leadership skills on court

Saturday, December 22, 2007 2:51 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Chemistry on the basketball court isn't as simple as mixing the contents of Beaker A with Beaker B, although the occasional explosion occurs as a coach experiments with different rotations of players.
The Ohio State women's team finishes its pre-Big Ten schedule against Nebraska at noon today in Value City Arena. The 18th-ranked Buckeyes (8-2) still admittedly are getting to know one another within the flow of a game.
"Obviously in some plays, you can tell that we read each other really well," junior guard Ashlee Trebilcock said. "Then there are other times where one person is thinking one thing and another is thinking something else. Chemistry, on the court, is something we definitely need to work on."

Ohio State-Nebraska preview

Saturday, December 22, 2007 2:51 AM

Noon today

? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 8-2; Nebraska 9-2
? Matchup to watch: In the final nonconference game for OSU, coach Jim Foster says to watch the shooting range of the Nebraska post players. "Their post players are European in style," he said. "Because we don't have that style of post player, our post players are going to be defending in a way they haven't. We have defended quick, athletic teams on the perimeter, so we have a frame of reference for that. It's just a good team for us to play, getting ready for the Big Ten."

Packer scores 23, Lavender 21 to lead No. 18 Ohio State to 86-74 victory over Nebraska

By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Marscilla Packer shot her way out of a slump with 23 points and No. 18 Ohio State pulled away in the second half to beat Nebraska 86-74 Saturday, ending the Cornhuskers' six-game winning streak.
Jantel Lavender added 21 points and Tamarah Riley 13 for the Buckeyes (9-2), who won their fourth in a row in their final tuneup before beginning Big Ten play on Dec. 30.
Danielle Page scored 16 points and Tay Hester and Cory Montgomery each had 14 for Nebraska (9-3), which had not lost since Nov. 24 against Creighton in the Oahu Classic.
Packer, who had made just 19 of 62 shots from the field (31 percent) in her previous five games, hit three 3-pointers from the left corner -- she had to reset her feet one time so she didn't step on the side out-of-bounds line because she was so deep -- while Ohio State slowly pulled away. Her third 3 in the span of five Buckeyes' baskets put them ahead 54-49 before an Ashlee Trebilcock pass led to an easy layup by Star Allen at the 14-minute mark of the second half.

Jantel Lavender, right, of Ohio State is fouled by Nikki Bober of Nebraska while shooting in the first half. Lavender, a freshman, scored 21 points.

There apparently is something to the story of the tortoise and the hare. Slower and steadier can win a race, even when the pace is a click or two below breakneck.

The Ohio State women's basketball team proved as much yesterday afternoon in Value City Arena. By dialing down the tempo in the second half, the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (9-2) managed to pull away late and post an 86-74 victory over Nebraska (9-3).

OSU looking to keep stranglehold on title
Buckeyes take on Spartans to begin conference play

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State women's basketball team has won at least a portion of the past three Big Ten regular-season championships.

The quest by the 17th-ranked Buckeyes (9-2) for a fourth consecutive title begins today against Michigan State (8-5, 0-1) in East Lansing, Mich.
Ohio State's seniors have explained to their freshman teammates the importance of continuing the recent dominance.
"I know we're defending champs," freshman Jantel Lavender said. "We're going to do whatever we can to maintain that."
Senior guard Marscilla Packer said that message has been a constant.
"We've told them that from the beginning of the season how important it is for us to win a fourth one," she said. "They're coming along and getting better every day in practice. So they're seeing how it's going to be competitive."
