Lady Bucks Basketball Thread

Maryland is 9-0 with two victories over top ten teams this season already for the Terps, including a 13 point win over perennial power LSU. They had another impressive win in a convincing defeat of top-25 Notre Dame by 16. OSU (5-1) is coming off a 9 point home loss to now #24, previously unranked Auburn and has not played any other team of significance.

However, Maryland had suprisingly close victories (four point margins) on the road against UCLA (Sun 11/25) and UCSB (Fri 11/23) and played again Tuesday night against Pittsburgh. This will be playing their 4th game in eight days, with two of those being on the west coast. OSU last played Sunday. Also, the Terps have ANOTHER huge top 10 matchup (women's basketball has tons of great out-of-conference matchups every season) coming Monday night at Rutgers. Perhaps a chance to catch them looking ahead a bit?

All that being said, Maryland prevails by 15-20. Too much depth and experience for the Bucks to handle.

WOMEN MARYLAND 77 OSU 53
Terrapins too much against Buckeyes

Saturday, December 01, 2007

Associated Press

College Park, Md.- Crystal Langhorne scored 17 points, Marissa Coleman added 14 and No. 3 Maryland beat 19th-ranked Ohio State, 77-53, Friday night in the women's basketball Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Laura Harper had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Kristi Toliver recorded 11 assists to help the Terrapins (10-0) became the first team in the country to reach double figures in victories. Four of those wins have come against ranked opponents.
Langhorne, a senior center, grabbed six rebounds to reach 966 for her career, two short of the school record held by Vicky Bullett. Langhorne has 44 points in three starts since returning from a sprained ankle that forced her to miss six of Maryland's first seven games.

Ohio State's Lesslee Mason-Cox contends for a rebound with Maryland's Crystal Langhorne.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Three minutes into the game last night, the Ohio State women's basketball team already was seeing more stars than one of those poor souls who fought Mike Tyson in his early years.
Third-ranked Maryland played the part of Tyson with a dizzying offense that sent the 19th-ranked Buckeyes reeling to a 77-53 loss in the Big Ten/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge.
Maryland (10-0) bobbed, weaved, jabbed and bombarded Ohio State behind the dazzling ball-handling of point guard Kristi Toliver and the inside power trio of Laura Harper, Marissa Coleman and Crystal Langhorne.

Ohio State recruit Prahalis reveals magical skills
Posted: Thursday December 13, 2007 1:12PM; Updated: Thursday December 13, 2007 1:12PM

By Ryan Canner-O'Mealy, Special to SI.com, RISE

As with most magicians, what you don't see about Sammy Prahalis is just as important as what you do see. And with her prop of choice -- a basketball rather than a wand -- there's no doubt the Commack (N.Y.) senior point guard is equal parts Steve Nash and David Blaine.

The way she effortlessly dishes out no-look passes, delivers ankle-breaking crossovers and dribbles circles around her opponents is almost supernatural. Prahalis makes it look so simple that it's easy to forget what you can't see: how hard she works.

"She has a gift for the game, but she has worked as hard as anyone I've ever seen," says Commack head coach Denis Conroy.

OSU women's basketball: Lavender makes fast impression on Foster

Neal c. lauron dispatch
Freshmen center Jantel Lavender has already earned two Big Ten player of the week honors for Ohio State.

On the way to practice this week, Jantel Lavender walked past Ohio State women's basketball coach Jim Foster and drew a nod and a smile.
"She's got a chance," Foster said.
The short sentence served as a rave review of the freshman center. Eight games into Lavender's college career, loftier compliments are coming from other directions.
After Lavender dropped a 24-point, 15-rebound performance in a 69-55 win over Mississippi, Rebels coach Renee Ladner offered a nod but not much of a smile.
"She's a force," Ladner said. "Everyone in the country would've liked to sign her."
The quick start is not a surprise. Lavender provided a snapshot of her ability last summer as a member of the gold-medal winning U.S. team in the FIBA Under-19 world championships in Slovakia.
DePaul's Doug Bruno coached the team, which also included Connecticut freshman Maya Moore, Tennessee freshman Angie Bjorklund and Michigan State sophomore Allyssa DeHaan.

Ohio State women's basketball
Time off was well spent
Young Buckeyes used break to fix what's broken
Sunday, December 16, 2007 3:31 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

At first glance, coach Jim Foster didn't particularly like the two-week break in the schedule that faced the Ohio State women's basketball team after its Dec. 2 game against Mississippi.
He had changed his mind long before the 19th-ranked Buckeyes (6-2) boarded the plane for a trip to Seattle that would lead to tonight's game against the Washington Huskies (4-6).
"It's a good time of the year to be going on the road and to get away after exams," Foster said. "This couple of weeks has been good for us tidying up some things and then just improving some areas."
The shift in his opinion mostly stemmed from the makeup of an OSU roster that has nine freshmen and sophomores.

Game preview: OSU at Washington

Washington_Huskies_12-16-07_C11_GU8E75K.jpg

7 TONIGHT
? Where: Bank of America Arena, Seattle
? Records: Ohio State 6-2; Washington 4-6
? TV: Fox Sports Net
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Key matchup: The Buckeyes spent much of the past two weeks of practice polishing their guard play on offense and defense. The point-guard combo of Maria Moeller and Shavelle Little finally has the chance to apply practice to the game against the Huskies, who have a solid veteran running the team in senior Emily Florence. See what happens.
? Noteworthy: The Huskies bring a two-game losing streak into the game that follows an eight-day break for final exams. Washington has played its best basketball at home, but lost its last outing in Bank of America Arena to Pepperdine 74-56. Coach Tia Jackson is in her first season and has five freshmen on the roster. One, Katelan Redmon, leads the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game. ... The Buckeyes are led in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (10.6) by freshman center Jantel Lavender, who has double-doubles in the past three games. Second-leading scorer Marscilla Packer has been held below double figures in the past three games. Packer needs three three-point baskets to tie Jamie Lewis (181) for fourth place in program history. OSU won last season's meeting in Columbus 84-79 behind 25 points from Packer.
? Next: vs. Youngstown State,
7 p.m. Wednesday, Value City Arena

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Packer keys Buckeyes' rout

Monday, December 17, 2007 From wire reports

While Packer was knocking down open shots from the outside, Jantel Lavender and Star Allen were dominating the interior, as the Buckeyes (7-2) had no problem with the Huskies (4-7) despite not playing since Dec. 2.
Packer made 7 of 16 shots and four 3-pointers. Lavender finished with 14 points and Allen had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
