As disappointing as it was, the season-ending loss to Marist doesn't look nearly as bad after the Red Foxes handled MTSU last night, 73-59, to become the third 13 seed to make the sweet 16.

I will agree that the Marist's victory over Middle Tennessee gave Marist more credence than what we were originally anticipating from them, and I am still very disappointed that the Ohio State Women's team got bounced so early once again from the tournament. When Foster first came to Ohio State from Vandy I thought that we would be in for a lot of runs deep into the tournament, i.e. Elite 8. Needless to say I am very disappointed and was somewhat surprised, and disappointed, when Smith gave him a contract extension. I think that he puts too much emphasis on post play and has not really recruited all-around athletes. I know that he has two MacDonald All-Americans coming in next year so hopefully he will surprise me and develop a more well-rounded team.

Women's basketball: OSU gets another shot at Marist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State women's basketball team will begin the 2007-08 season against Marist College, the team that upset the Buckeyes 67-63 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in March.
"It's a great way to start the season," OSU coach Jim Foster said. "It's a great measuring stick to see where we are relative to where we were at the end of last season."
The defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes play host to the Red Foxes on Sunday, Nov. 11, in Value City Arena. The nonconference schedule includes home games against Mississippi and Nebraska. The Buckeyes travel to Maryland and Washington.

Women's Basketball: Former Buckeye Davenport, USA Senior Women Defeat Australia, 96-64
TRENTON, N.J. (USA Basketball) -- Despite only having 10 players on the roster, three of whom still have at least one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, the 2007 USA Basketball Women?s Senior National Team (5-0) earned a 96-64 victory over Australia on Sunday afternoon at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J. USA Senior National Team veteran Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points, while Stanford University?s Candice Wiggins scored 18 points playing in her first game with the senior squad and the University of Oklahoma?s Courtney Paris logged 12 points.
To be fair, Australia was also without some of its big guns, including 2007 WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson (Seattle Storm) and Penny Taylor (Phoenix Mercury).
"We got a chance to make some good evaluations," said USA and Seattle Storm head coach Anne Donovan. "Look at Wiggins, she did a great job coming off the bench and really doing a good job on the perimeter for us. And we?re continuing to work on our chemistry, I saw good chemistry out there, defensively, and our offenses didn?t look too bad either. We still have a lot to work on and I?ll be happy once we have our full roster for Chile. But overall I saw some good things out there today."

Jantel Lavender

Ohio State has been extremely strong during the regular season under the leadership of head coach Jim Foster. In fact, the Buckeyes have claimed three consecutive Big Ten championships. But OSU has struggled and then some in the NCAA Tournament in recent years. At women's media day on Wednesday, we checked in with Foster, freshman phenom Jantel Lavender, senior guard Marscilla Packer and more.

College basketball: OSU women move forward without big three

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Marscilla Packer looked around the practice gym in the Schottenstein Center yesterday and laughed at the reminder that she suddenly is the most experienced player on the Ohio State women's basketball team. "Yeah, I know, weird," said Packer, a senior guard and two-year starter. "I guess it comes with the territory. I mean it's odd to me that I'm old. That's weird to me. But it's cool. I love it so far."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Samantha Prahalis, one of the top high school point guards in the country, plans to play basketball next season for Ohio State, her high school coach said. "Pretty much from day one, Ohio State was one of the first teams in on her," said Denis Conroy, her coach at Commack (N.Y.) High School on Long Island. "From our end, I can't say enough about the level of professionalism from their coaching staff and how nice they are as people."

Women
Buckeyes won't stand around with new group

By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Star Allen didn't need to read an instruction booklet to understand the kind of team that Ohio State women's basketball coach Jim Foster plans to build this season.

"We're going to run a lot more," said Allen, a junior forward. "We're very athletic. A lot of things are going to change, such as the plays and how we play."
For the past four seasons, Foster constructed the Buckeyes around the considerable talents of three-time All-America center Jessica Davenport and All-Big Ten guard Brandie Hoskins.
That meant opportunistic running, with the creative Hoskins triggering the fast break. The major portion of the offense, however, was tied to the low-post presence of Davenport in the half-court.
