Kevin Wilson (Former HC Tulsa)

I think the criticism revolved almost exclusively around not giving the ball to Carlos Hyde on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 in the B1G championship game against MSU.
Yep. There were people bitching about Herman up until the offense really started clicking a few weeks into 2014.

That isn't exclusive to tOSU. Every fanbase bitches about coordinators. They're easy targets. I guarantee after the first clunker under the new offensive staff, and there will be some, people will be on here bitching about them. It's the nature of the beast.

Which was an Urban call.

In fact something that isn't talked about NEARLY enough with regards to offensive woes the last 2 seasons is Urban himself. It's his offense. It's easy to blame Beck for a variety of reasons, namely, he came in after a NC and team was loaded with talent and everyone expected it to stay humming.

I suspect Urban knew what he was getting and thought he could work around it. He is obsessed with recruiting and in that regard, he had to be pleased with Beck. Nobody ever said Beck was a great offensive mind. It's just not something he has EVER been known for. And Urban knew it. Like Herman, I think Urb figured he could work with that by his "team" approach and it failed miserably. WAY too many cooks in the kitchen.

The difference now, if Wilson is hired, is that Urban will trust him more and give him the keys from the get go. In fact, in retrospect, I'll go so far as to say that Hermans early struggles were probably somewhat the result of a micromanaging boss. Urban may have been named after a Pope but he isn't infallible.

I suspect Urban has self assessed like all great leaders do and he's going to take a different approach. If Wilson is the hire, my hunch is he gets full control over the offense moreso than any OC that Urb has ever had.

This isn't a shot at JT, but I see no reason there shouldn't be some competition at his position through the off-season and spring ball.

Based on Burrows arm and how electric it sounds like Haskins has been, I do believe there should be some pressure on JT to maintain his spot.

JT is a very good college player and proved how effective he could be in his RS Freshman season. But some guys behind him definitely have better tools. I'm not calling for random change, but I see no reason to just openly give him the starting position going into 2017-18 season. I think all 3 guys should feel like they're competing....

hold up. definitely? I believe once the Beck stink wears off, people are going to remember what 2014 JT really looked like.

I'm a huge Burrows fan. But next year JT is going to shine.

I agree... I do think however there's no way they'll sit someone like JT.

It'll be moot tho because JT will be the 14' QB we thought he'd be his entire career.

When I say "tools" I'm referring to things like arm-strength, size, and accuracy.

There's not much comparison in arm strength and size between Burrow and JT for example. Doesn't mean Burrow would/will be a better QB, but Burrow is working with some physical advantages.

One other thing to point out, is I'd consider Burrow a better fit for what we've seen historically under Kevin Wilson than JT. However, I'd expect Wilson to adjust his offense to what Meyer likes to do so that favors JT.

Either way, I just think it'd be good for all 3 guys to feel like they've got a chance at PT and put some pressure on JT to step his game up.

Oh, yeah - I forgot - Urban has all the plays run through him... except 21 pass plays during the first half of the Fiesta Bowl.

If people can't see how Urban protects his program: taking the blame for those back-to-back run Braxton not Hyde, taking the blame for Johnston fake punt (despite clearly yelling "who called that!?"), allowing Withers and Beck to move on gracefully... Urban is not an idiot.

Further, if Coach did blame someone else for that play call - I would lose an immense amount of respect for him. He has done things the "right way" since moving to Franklin County, but, to pretend like Urban is telling the truth to the media regarding 'who called what play' is silly, IMO. Maybe he is.. maybe he isn't... but, to me anyways, seems clear as day he circles the wagons and protects his program like a good CEO should.

Many outside the program would call BS on this, but Urban has absolutely given up a lot of control on the offensive side of the ball as a contract with his family.

One of his single biggest issues at UF was trying to control everything including play-calling and game plans. It kept him up at night, long nights at the office, and a dependency on alcohol and Ambien. At OSU he has let his coaches do their jobs....sometimes not very effectively. But he has much better balance which will be much more productive for him and the program in the long-run.

Hence, a new OC starting in 2017.

I don't believe Burrow has the stronger arm and while he's taller, JT appears significantly stronger.
