Justin Frye (OL Coach Arizona Cardinals)

I put this in the Guthrie thread but it belongs here.

Give me a B caliber technique coach who is an A recruiter every time.

I don't care about transfer portal era, NIL or anything else. Be a decent coach of superior talent and you will look like a better coach than you really are.
but it seems like spotting OL talent out of high school is much more of a mixed bag and more dependent on development of technique over a couple of years at a competitive program, compared to “skill” positions.

or at least nobody has cracked the code yet.

taking a somewhat known talent out of the portal seems like a more efficient approach.

It does to me too, but they keep going after the HS kids so you have to index to recruiting until proven otherwise I think.

to be fair (and it was maybe frye reaching or day pushing him or both), but they made a big pivot to portal recruiting for OL… maybe just a way also to humble the likes of sanders.

either way it seems to have worked. we’re not in a bad spot on the OL for at least next year.

i’d take 3-4 OL from the portal out of Div 1 schools with proven snaps and abilities than paying a couple mil for a high school kid who hasn’t faced anyone of proven worth.

At O-line I'd be fine with the reverse. Justin showed himself to be at least a B+ technique guy problem is the either either dispised recruiting or had trouble connecting with kids till they were on campus. So he wasn't a B but was more like a low c recruiting wise.

Given all that he should do very well in the pros

Sanders got a home and a bag. OSU can compete that way, but they won't, and in the portal world they shouldn't.

I was hard on him, until I saw the current landscape play out the last few years.

There is no doubt he had the backups ready. Tim Drevno may have also had a role with that.

Will be tough for anyone to convince me LeCharles Bentley isn't the pinnacle for this position.
Elite tier of teaching/running a premium operation.. wrote the book on the topic

Known as one the ultra elite players as an OL in pros and college. OSU blood/Hall of Fame/AA/Remington/
How is that not a formula that doesn't spell GET HIM.... IF he even has an interest

Him and Marotti would create cyborgs

I definitely agree, but I just think he’s a massive pipe dream. Why leave your own company where you have no where near the level of pressure as a coach. His predecessor was almost run out of town, and his possible future boss had death threats to himself and his family, BY HIS OWN FANS! Not sure Bentley wants that. But I could be wrong.

Anyway, best of luck to Coach Frye. He was a bigpart of why OSU won the Natty and that won’t be forgotten
