Can the Buckeyes still get top football recruit Jordan Hicks? Hey, Doug!

Q: Hey, Doug: What are your thoughts about Ohio State's recruiting class? Does it address the important needs? No chance to get Jordan Hicks, right? -- Brad Bauer, Short Hill, N.J.
A: Hey, Brad: I wouldn't give up on Hicks, one of the top linebackers in the country, just yet. Ohio State, Texas and Florida are his final three choices. And though he's always seemed like a Texas fan, anytime the big home-state school is hanging around in the last month of recruiting like Ohio State is, there's a chance.
The Buckeyes are going to need to land at least one major recruit -- either Hicks or No. 1 offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson of Minnesota -- to lift this class to the standard of recent years. Offensive lineman Andrew Norwell and running back Roderick Smith are the headliners so far, though the Buckeyes are deep at running back. But Norwell and defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins are the only linemen. That's a little light in the trenches, though the Buckeyes did have six linemen in last year's class.
Overall, Ohio State, with 17 oral commitments, currently ranks 22nd in the recruiting rankings, according to Rivals.com.
But sometimes even the players don't have a clear vision at this point in the process. For example, Hicks has narrowed his choices to OSU, Texas and Florida, though not necessarily in that order. National champion Alabama has continued to try to get in the picture, too.
"Coach (Nick) Saban wanted to try to set something up to make a visit up here, but Jordan said he'd rather not, that he's not ready to add them to the mix, that he's having enough trouble trying to decide from those other three," Lakota West coach Larry Cox said.
He said the decision from Hicks should come before signing day.
"The battle for Jordan Hicks is one of the more interesting storylines to follow," Crabtree said. "Not only is he a local Ohio kid, but you've got national powers like Texas, which just played for the national championship, and Florida coming into your backyard trying to get him.
"Those two schools don't come to the state of Ohio too often recruiting, which means they mean business. And I think it would send a good message to everybody else in college football if Ohio State could hold serve for a major player like that."

What have you heard lately about Jackson Jeffcoat and Jordan Hicks?
- Mike from Pasadena, Texas
I don't think much has changed with Hicks, a linebacker out of West Chester, Ohio. It's three schools - Ohio State, Texas and Florida - for the top-rated player at his position.
The funny thing is that when you talk with some folks they say he's going to Texas. Others say it's Florida. What I don't hear people say much is that he's staying home to play for Ohio State. After speaking with him in Orlando, Fla., following an Under Armour All-America practice, I did get a vibe from him that it was either Texas or Florida.
I think it's just too close to call, and something tells me not to fall asleep on Ohio State.

Gee, wonder which school would make such a threat to a coach for a recruit?"There was one head coach who told the guy who recruits our area, 'Don't screw this up. I will fire you if we lose Jordan Hicks because of something you say,' " said Larry Cox, Hicks' coach at Lakota West. "He was very serious about that. That particular head coach loves this kid, and he let that assistant know just how much it means to him that they don't screw it up."
