John Calipari (official thread of impending probation)

Calipari is feeling the effects of turning UK into a basketball factory. He's got a team of top recruits who aren't winning like they expected and are playing for themselves rather than their team. They may be super talented, but they don't have the commitment to winning in college and that makes a huge difference. And add that to the fact that most of these guys are going to be NBDL players rather than NBA players next year, and you have compounded your obstacles to winning games.

BTW, props to Terrence Jones on earning NBDL All Star honors this year. Darius Miller and Doron Lamb also have had stints in the NBDL this year - of course Daniel Orton has been an NBDL regular for a few years now. Coach Cal is very generous, not only is UK an NBA factory but also an NBDL factory.

And he's complaining about his players being uncoachable? You picked the players, and you had the pick of the litter! Quit whining and take your lumps. The same Coach Cal that says you don't want a team of Seniors because it's a losing team is now losing with a team of freshmen. UK fans might want to break out the "10-loss Cal" moniker for him after this season.

Tubby Smith got forced out for the supposed crime of not making the Final Four as the No. 1 overall seed a couple times. UK fans were ready to riot.

Now that Calipari's team seems firmly entrenched in the NIT field, you don't hear a peep from them.

Kinda makes you wonder about the real reasons Tubby Smith was run out of town, doesn't it?

Not really.

Calipari is orders of magnitude a better coach than Tubby.
For all his warts and "methods", their isn't a person on the planet that wouldn't agree with that.

Tubby has never won anywhere without beifit of the previous regimes players.

I loathe Calipari and his incentous relationship with Vitale.
But those of you who think they woun't be back (like next year) are sadly mistaken.
They may have the GOAT recruiting class coming in.

Didn't they just raise a new banner this year?

Cheating fucks.

Just because he can sell Kentucky basketball (recruiting) does not mean that he is that great of a coach of basketball.

My point was only he is an infinilty better coach than tubby.

However, you want to define it.

I'll define it as winning games, though was really impressed last year with hard and unselfish they played.

Tubby will be ousted next year as Minny will blow goats.
They have a senior laden team this year that has vastly underacheived.

There is no team in the country that given the opportunity would take Tubby over Cal. Unless perhaps they were worried about banners coming down.

Oh, I won't argue the point that Tubby is not that good of a coach. I think I posted yesterday that he gets more credit than he deserves. His team this year is extremely undisciplined and he has no control over them. I don't know if that makes Cal a better coach or not because I don't think he has much control over all of his McDonald AAs.

"because I don't think he has much control over all of his McDonald AAs."

I dissent with the caveat i haven't followed this years squads closely.

I can't stand Cal, if I ran into him I would likely knee him in the fruitstand.

However, his squads generally play hard on both ends, are unselfish, and are dicsiplined.
Hell last year Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist (the top 2 picks in the draft must of averaged around 10 shots a game.
last years version appeared to have a bunch of good kids also.

Cal was playing with fire getting the best talent and expecting them to play for Kentucky when they all want to play for themselves first and foremost and get to the NBA ASAP. He got burned this year (I don't mean that in the VD sense, but he may have gotten VD as well I just don't know).

He can turn things around when he gets a super class in next year because the talent might be too good for the vast majority of teams to beat them - especially in the shitty SEC - but that doesn't change the fact that relying almost entirely on 1 & done guys is a hard way to win, because you've got to have not just NBA prospects but future NBA starters to make it work. And some of these guys care so much about themselves that they don't buy in to the team concept fully, which makes being a championship team impossible when you have to play them. One of the problems with UK right now is there was so little coming back, so little experience on the team that they have to rely almost exclusively on freshmen, resulting in a lack of leadership and lack of a winning culture being passed down from upperclassmen. They did have a 4* sophomore in Kyle Wiltjer coming back, an experienced deep reserve in Jarod Polson and an experienced transfer Ryan Harrow who was on their team last year, plus graduate transfer Julius Mays, but on the whole that is a mediocre group of players to build off of with freshmen. And it's going to be hard to continue to build when those guys who could be back see what's coming in and are afraid of riding the pine since Calipari is playing a very short bench in recent years. So the 1 & done cycle is in full swing now, and I don't know that it's going to change anytime soon. John Calipari has turned Kentucky into college basketball's one night stand, and the Blue Balls Nation can't get enough of it.

I wonder if Cal paid those Florida guys not to score in the last 7 minutes of their game so they might have a better chance of making the Dance.
Keep beating that one dead horse. Cal doesn't mind; he'll continue to draw his millions, go to the Dance and put guys into the League.

Calipari is a terrific coach who is also ethically challenged. The latter doesn't change the former. Had Thad Matta never been born, I'd love to have John Calipari as coach of the Buckeyes.

Seriously? Successful or not, they guy has left a trail of sanctions at every stop. That's the guy you would want leading the basketball program?
