I couldn't tell you how he would feel, but I would bet he would have laughed given the circumstances of the exchange.

If you dish it out...blah blah. Seems to me, plenty of fans love to dish it out...but sure can't take it.

I thought it was a stupid joke, but its not worth talking about for more than a minute.

say this sentence outloud to a non-osu fan and they would laugh at you. Woody had much respect for michigan, but he also had much hatred.

How about not being willing to fill up for gas? Or refusing to say their name? those were not good-hearted things.

I'm not faulting him for those things... I'm saying woody was far from a politically-correct guy. How many quotes have to be found before some of you see the inconsistency?

I DON'T THINK IT WAS A BIG DEAL. I said I percieved it to be a joke. But just because a joke was told doesn't mean its funny. To me, it wasn't funny. I don't think it was distasteful, but I certainly didn't crack a smile or laugh.

I bet he would have laughed it off... you don't last multiple generations as a coach without having thick skin

Oh, I'm sure he would have laughed it off, because deep down, he's a class guy. But that doesn't mean he would have found it funny. It's not unusual for a class person to fake laugh on tv.

I'm tired of the whole "it was just a joke" line. People hide behind that too much after insulting someone or something. I personally was not offended by what Paterno said. I did not go to Ohio State, but the comment disappointed me nonetheless. Was it funny or insulting? I guess that's a matter of opinion. It may have been funny at a private banquet, a roast, or even a midweek press conference. But the "joke" was not very appropriate in a setting like a national awards show. Would Jim Tressel EVER say something like that in that setting.... or in any public setting for that matter? I think we all know the answer to that question, and I think that is very telling as to how appropriate Paterno's "joke" really was (or wasn't).

Teams seem so worried about providing bulletin board material these days, I think it's fun to hear some good-natured smack talk for a change. I didn't hear it, but it certainly sounds as though it would have been hilarious.

Besides, if anyone's earned the right to say whatever the heck pops into his head, it's JoePa.

did spielman interview him after the psu game? it might have been related to that.

I would agree it was awkward... but then again most of the sentences JoePa delivers are awkward.

I think its just a product of being 78 years old. My inlaws would openly make comments about other kids while watching their grandson in meets. It makes you cringe at times. But as Joe Paterno said "He doesn't care what other people think!" And thats exactly it. Older people will say whatever is on their minds and to whomever. While its kind of funny and inspiring in a way, it can get you into trouble later on.

Yes Woody spoke his mind and raged on the sideline, but we all know how that ended. Poor judgement!

FWIW, Don't get me wrong. I think this is minor. But I think it was in poor taste. And I wouldn't be surprised if later on Paterno says something that won't be dismissed as a joke!

I didn't like it. A byproduct of being beaten up in the media for the last few years, probably.

It's one thing to do something like that on a local tv/radio show, but this was yet another shot at Ohio State on national tv.

Just the overly sensitive bitch in me.

Quite a little shitstorm brewing here.

I don't think Woody's "because I couldn't go for 3" quote is comparable to what JoePa said tonight. One, IIRC, Woody said that to a local reporter whereas this was on national TV; two, if anyone wants to construe any type of disrespect for scUM out of Woody's comment, it was directed towards the football team, not the entire university.

With that said, I chuckled when GrandPa said it. I didn't laugh out loud, I chuckled. Did I think that my degrees from OSU had been tarnished somehow? No! I saw an old man, who is still quite spry and vital, attempting to make a joke. I hope that if I live to be his age and am still in my profession, at the same institution for over 50 years, that I too will be as sound of mind and spirit to attempt such jokes and I hope that I will be as loved and revered as he is.

Finally, we should not forget that when the Andy Katzenmoyer "class schedule" was made public, JoePa was one of the first questioned by the media about it. I vividly remember JoePa stating that if the course Katz was taking were college level courses, and counted towards his degree, why should anyone have a problem with it. JoePa went out of his way, IMO, to defend Katz and OSU on that matter, and that told me what kind of human the man is.

I was a bit taken aback to say the least. I had a lot of respect for the guy and suddenly didn't know what to think. I have to agree with what someone said on The Ozone:

On a classy night for college football the live remark filtered thru as good-natured chummy humor - since it never occurred to me that ANYONE would take a cheapshot at anyone else on a night like this. Reflecting on it shortly after, however, I view it as highly inappropriate "humor" for this reason: it wasn't the continuation of any previous public light banter where Kirk and Paterno were one-upping the other regarding their respective school's academic reputation, but rather was a naked, unprovoked parting shot in an interview that had nothing to do with Ohio State.

It was a non sequitur having no redeeming value. Even attempting to construe it as a compliment to Herbstreit's well-spoken manner doesn't make the "joke" any more appropriate or any less damaging. It's still Paterno saying, "You're a breath of fresh air given that the typical Ohio Stater doesn't speak English well."

Someone said Kirk took the joke well. Actually, Kirk stumbled for words - he didn't know what to say after that remark. Re-watch the broadcast later tonight and listen. I take it he was still processing the remark as I was - and beginning to wonder just how appropriate a joke it was. And as for it being a joke, I simply ask - what's the funny part?

I guess my first knee-jerk reaction was that it was given in such a way that there was no chance for defense or counter-jabs, and that it was just one more thing for our opponents to use as "bait". At the very least, it's something to file away for next year.

I must say that for years I have wondered why JoPa has been singled out by the media as a paragon of class. Because so many did and because he's been around for a lot of years I just sort of accepted it, even though there are a lot of other coaches nationally and in the past whom I thought were every bit as deserving of that title.
But tonight the man went way over the line. I started to smile when he started out, thinking he was just going to gig Herbie about being an Ohio State guy. Nothing wrong with that...good natured humor. The Game Day guys to that to Herbie with great frequency and he takes in, good naturedly.
But JoPa chose to go a considerable step further. He demeaned a great university on national TV, in such a way not only to denigrate it in a general academic sense, but perhaps more practically in a recruiting sense. Can you not envision him saying that sort of thing more privately to potential recruits? I can.
Of course he thought of it as a joke...as a funny line. But a guy "with class", with tons of experience, should have had better sense than to stray into attack and beyond humor. It will be interesting to see if the media that loves and canonizes him sloughs this remark off as meaningless...of no consequence. I doubt that Tress will respond at all...Gene Smith might...and if so, with class.
Frankly, if I were the PSU administration or at least their AD, I would flat out instruct him to apologize. Doubt if it will happen though. If you think about it, how was his action any less hurtful that ole' Woody's punch at a big, defenseless linebacker, both on national TV? Probably is one of degree, but not by much. Woody got fired...I am not suggesting Joe be so. But he should make some level of amends. :(
