JoePa and Herbie (Merged then Split again)

Nothing embarrasses OSU fans more than to have thousands of them getting their panties all twisted up and firing off emails because some internet columnist criticizes the team. Not surprising we have one of the worst reputations in the country.

Yeah...it's probably common knowledge amongst the media that the quickest way to boost ratings or to get response is by bashing the Buckeyes.

Some of the best advice my mom gave me as a child was when my grandpa used to tease me about girls. I'd get angry, frustrated and even cry...he just kept going at me. My mom then pulled me over and said "if he doesn't know it bothers you, he'll quit".

Colin Cowherd had a small comment, made in passing, turn into a week long ordeal because if had to do with Ohio State. If he had said the same thing about Nebraska, it would have died there. It's like quicksand...the more you react and squirm, the worse it gets.

To me, JoePa looked like he was having a blast tonight. He could barely quit laughing at the first mention of Heffner. He smiled almost all night and seemed to just be taking it all in. I think this was a culmination of a couple years of frustration finally being forgotten and him reaping the rewards. He had the crowd eating out of his hand most of the night, and he simply wanted another laugh.

When it all comes down to it, no one in the country likes Ohio State any more or less based on that exchange. If someone thinks our academics are a joke, that perception will continue with or without reasonable backing. Case in point, "Tennecleat", "Tennecheat", "Free Shoes University", "Cryami", "Thug U"...must I continue? Like Grad said, if JoePa said the same thing about Miami, we'd think it was hilarious and enshrine him...yet think no different of the Hurricane program.

When it comes down to it, reasonable people know it was a joke...and a moderately funny one. Unreasonable people won't have their opinion swayed anyway, because their thought process is blocked by their own personal bias. Kirk did the right thing by not getting defensive and making the University look bad. We should take a page out of his book...Herbie has long been the kind of classy picture in the face of adversity, that our fanbase would do well to emulate.

Very well said, Oiler.

The degree to which a remark is humorous is often tied to the degree to which it is ridiculous or outlandish. If the comment is true, it isn't funny. If it's obviously untrue, it is funny. Since JoePa apparently laughed at the remark, I think it is safe to assume it was not intended as a seriously disparaging remark aimed at tOSU.

This incident and the hullabaloo over the apartment break-in really stike me as rather paranoid reactions. It's understandable to have a hightened concern over public perception given the press mess of the past few years, but the storm has died down for the most part. Now, it's just a subset of OSU fans jumping around and yelling that everything is fine so stop picking on us! Fans of other programs are probably just watching in puzzlement and wondering if we doth protest too much.

So a public forum does not affect public perceptions of a fanbase? I'm sorry, but that one doesn't float. Have you been on message boards very long?
By and large, an internet message board doesn't affect public perception of a fanbase. Behavior at home and even more-so away games does far more to build a public persona of "The Buckeye Fan".
As for your personal question, what do you consider long? A month? 6 months? 8 years.

The point of them laughing is that they aren't taking it as serious as our own fans. They realize it was a joke, a jab, a zing, whatever. The only people taking it seriously are Buckeye fans.
And why would they? If I said something derogatory about you, you would be significantly more annoyed than {anyone not you} <anyone not="" you="">. That's how insults work. Unless they're directed at racial/ethnic/religious minorities, then everyone's up in arms.</anyone>

Agreed, but don't discount the effects of message board garbage. It affects recruiting for sure and a number of folks on this site will tell you the same after interacting with various kids, parents, and coaches here. However, in a closed world where you may never meet the majority of many fans from other schools, the internet is a small view of those fans so of course perceptions will be gathered from those observations. Fair? probably not, but it is a fact of today's internet world.

Completely rheotorical. If you have been using this form of communication very long, you would realize the above statement is indeed true.

And why would they? If I said something derogatory about you, you would be significantly more annoyed than <anyone not="" you="">. That's how insults work. Unless they're directed at racial/ethnic/religious minorities, then everyone's up in arms.

No I probably wouldn't be annoyed. With age, my profession, and my daily dealings with teenagers, I have developed thicker skin than to react to some off-the-cuff quip from an aging legend. Remarks about tOSU have nothing to do with </anyone>racial/ethnic/religious minorities yet a number of fans jump at every remark and are "up in arms." If one is so concerned about the integrity of the University, is that reaction really the way to go about solving the situation?

I have a feeling that lowpoint is about to be surpassed...

JoePa's email and office number is posted on other forums...

Embarrassing.

Very, it was an award show. It was a compliment to Herbie in my mind saying 'hey you're doing good, despite being the enemy'. It's like when talking about my ex-roommate on if we got along i'll usually say yea he's a pretty cool guy, well as cool as you can be while rooting for scUM that is ha'
If you don't like the comment then so be it, but to have such a extreme response that you must bitch about this until it reaches the point of hatred, it disgust me. The man is nearly 80 years old, i'd hate to see the stuff being sent to him over a joke, a joke on a night in his life that he should have some freedom to make those jokes. I'm ashamed to be reading all of these post. I'd hate to play poker with a bunch of you, so insecure.

If it wasn't for the internet things like this would never become an issue. I think too often people use the internet as a vehicle to bash things that don't matter, put other people down when they have no reason to do so, and basically make inappropriate statements that would never fly in the real world. The only way this comment would EVER make a news story is if tOSU fans make such a big deal about it that a writer can write the typical tOSU has the worst fans ever story.

When I saw this is my thought process

1.) I laughed it was kind of funny

2.) Man I wish we had beat PennState I hate them, I hope we win next year

3.) Buckeyplanet will go nuts

Sure enough here we are arguing back and forth about a stupid issue. I guess that is why message boards are fun is because you can have conversations about things that really don't matter, but sometimes I wonder if people really believe what they are typing. If this is really something that is a big deal to you, I feel sorry for you.

Having said all that I think I'll just stir the pot some more

To all the JoePa apologists, would your reaction have been the same if the comments had come from Llloyd Carr?

This post wasn't about solving the situation, it was about discussing the situation. And now I'm completely and totally off-topic. But that's fine, I don't really care so much about joepa's comments as I find the debate interesting.

And if you were asking rhetorically how long I'd been on BBS's I can only assume it was meant in a condescending manner, but I'll let it slide. I haven't been around this board much, which is why I figured I'd get my feet wet in some topics I assumed were pretty pointless, as opposed to heading right into the recruiting forum and spouting off. ^_^
