JoePa and Herbie (Merged then Split again)

Looks like I missed a lot last night.

I'm thinking about forwarding this thread to 1460 to show how idiotic our fans are.

I'm surprised the sun even came up today after the apocalyptic events of last night!!

I did not watch the awards show, and thusly I did not hear JoePa's quip, as I was busy watching Greg Oden manhandle Dayton Dunbar. Nevertheless, I feel qualified to offer an analysis of the situation.

Someone mentioned (excuse my lazy allusion) that this comment was funny because it clearly wasn't true. I disagree. I find it amusing specifically for the truth behind it. Ohio State, for better or for worse, has a reputation of being a lax academic institution. Is it as true today as it has been in the past? Perhaps not; the school has taken significant strides in recent years to go out and recruit (read: purchase) a laundry list of great minds to act as spackle and fill in the holes. Obviously, if you ask a serious question today about the scholastic integrity of tOSU, you'll get back an impressive answer. The various MFA programs are good, I hear great things about architecture and pre-med, and the Fisher School of Business is nothing short of elite. Does this recent window dressing change the fact that we used to be an academic non-entity? I certainly don't think so. And consider the source of the jab. Joe Paterno is a hundred and forty-twelve years old. I'd expect reticence out of the old codger about as much as I would a sustained stream of urine. Let the guy have his little moment in the sun - he absolutely is a good coach, and he's a mainstay of college football whether you like it or not. People say he's a "mascot" on the sidelines. Even if this were true (not saying it is), is it not valuable to have a walking legend watching over things if it can inspire a young team to greatness? I give JoePa all due credit, and when he dies - on the sidelines, during a game, standing up - I'll doff my cap. My only hope is that when I'm that old, I can still bust balls.

I actually gained a lot more respect for JoePa last night, mainly because he seemed a lot sharper than I expected him to be after all these years: he's usually incoherent after a game, so I think my perception of him was distorted from all that gameday emotion.

His joke about OSU was just so clearly a harmless joke--and the way he was laughing was like, "oh man I know I'm gonna hear about this one", but more importantly he got a big (and very real) laugh from the audience, on a night when all these big football players were very nervous about actually being funny once they got onstage.

Paterno's comments on his career were interesting too, with some of the names he mentioned from way back but also the details he recollected from this season. He may not coach as actively as he used to, but this guy is no Bowden: he knows the names of his own players, and their opponents, as well as what they actually did in the game. That alone is pretty impressive for a 78-year-old coach.

Perhaps I have the perspective that several years exposure to the JoePa stand-up routine can bring, I used to see this type of quip - delivered in a self-deprecatory mode by JoePa on a regular basis when living in PA.

This is nothing new, this is nothing bad, this is Joe being Joe. If you doubt it watch out for when the 60 minutes re-run of JoePa in the lead up to one of his first (failed) attempts at the NC is shown once again on the ESPN Classic channel. Its all there in a press conference that is shown as part of the piece, the chummy pose, the laughing at his own joke before the punch line is started, let alone delivered. Joe has always liked the stage and is very comfortable using it to poke fun.

Joe's been like this for years, clever at making a mild shot across the bows of a respected opponent, all in good humor and typically offending no-one.

I'm wondering if the people who don't think this is was a joke are offended because the actually do struggle with English....you clearly don't understand what was going on... so for you, maybe JoePa did hit a little too close to home.

He was ribbing Herbstreit... big fucking deal, if you can't take a 79 year old man taking a harmless jab at Ohio State, you need to go home, lock yourself in a room and rub your swollen vulva until your fragile little egos don't hurt any more.

So let me get this straight. JoePa talks smack after 1 good season in.
How many years?
He is responsible for letting a great program go down hill.
He is responsible for wasting Micheal Robinson at wr and running back before leaving him at qb.
Sure he still has some fire, but his ego is bigger than Penn State football!
He should have gone to the dog track long ago!
Buckeye fans will remember this crap when he comes back to Columbus!

to his credit

joe is very active in that program. He still coaches technique to the kids on the practice field to this day, he talks to each kid about what classes they are taking, when their exams are, and he remembers those conversations and follows up on them. Joe would die without PSU football, and I think Joe realizes this.

He's not talking smack. He's making a joke. A player that comes to mind that Woody didnt put in the best postion for his talent: Paul Waurfield. One fo the best NFL recievers of all time. I know it was a diffrent era and offense but drop the wasting Robinson. There have been plenty of players not used to their potential. Hell some could make an argument that Ginn could contribute more as a DB than WR. Also this post mentioned how he dosent call plays. I havnt seen Bowden wearing headsets for awhile now either. All of you touchy ass people need to relax, this is football. Stop worrying about being politaclly(sp?) correct and take what Joe Pa said at face value. It was a joke.

Diversity issue

Was this a shot at the OSU student population not from the US?

In a country so caught up in being diversified and handling etnicitiy situations with kit gloves, it makes me wonder. I have that right to wonder!
