JoePa and Herbie (Merged then Split again)

Jesus Mary and Joseph! Anybody that didn't get a chuckle out of that needs to LIGHTEN UP. It was good natured joke from a legend at a broadcasters alma mater. Geesh, no wonder we Buckeye fans get a bad rap sometimes. :roll1:

I honestly believe he does nothing. What exactly can he do at 78 years of age? Give a pep talk every once in a while. You bring up a Woody quote, does that mean Paterno was being honest with his little jab?

Looks like I have got a choice here. Do I subscribe to the belief that Joe Pa hasn't done anything this year put forth by a somebody I do not know, and whether he has any credentials to back up his assertion. Or do I put my stock on the second winningest coach of all time and two time national champion coach? Sounds like a no brainer to me? I'll take the old man each and every time.

If you assertion is that joe is not coaching any more at least he has the intelligence to surround himself with great talent on the field and the coaching staff and get out of their way. Isn't it the job of any coach to get the best out of his players and staff? Joe sounds like a great coach to me.

Ohio State is sensitive to the perception that their degree is overvalued. A perception fostered in the recruiting circles. Didn't Ohio State battle this image during Andy Katzenmoyer Golf, Aids Awareness article and again with Clarett's cheating accusations?

Although minor, I see this joke as continuing to feed the overvalued degree perception.

Wouldn't this comment, although minor, be used in recruiting young players away from Ohio State?
Sorta like the way tOSU uses the stats regarding players in the NFL? Wouldn't the Academic All-Big Ten selections kinda counter that "lesser degree" assertion anyway?

if someone is gonna buy the line about osu academics being a joke, they will buy it regardless. Some flippant joke by paterno isn't going to cause them to believe it whereas they otherwise would not.

Woody wouldn't have said that..

grad21.....there is no way that Woody would have said something disrespectful of Michigan or any opponent for that matter....at least in a condescending way like JoePa did

if it was meant as a joke, then why didn't he pick a subject that was more obviously a joke then one that he knew would draw the laughter of the audience. He said it TO fire up the audience.

Woody would have no problem problem telling the media that he hated another team...but he did it out of respect

it's not a huge deal, but I think Tressel should make JoePa regret that comment a bit....perhaps when OSU beats Penn State next year he should come up with a zinger like "Joe needs to get some thicker glasses......or perhaps the QB's arm was tired from shooting arrows in the dormitory again"

...something to show that we can get them back if necessary

Really folks, it was a joke. If you think there was any malice in it then you are simply suffering from an inferiority complex. If you haven't noticed bt now, it takes a thick skin to be a Buckeye fan, and if you were outraged or offended by a 78 year old coaching legends good natured rib to a respected broadcasters alma mater, then you need to invest in some sand paper. The only reason we are targets for such jabs is because we are a very high visibility university that has had a large amount of success in athletics. Again, LIGHTEN UP. Its sad when a fan base gets all defensive and has a (currently) three page thread about harmless stuff like this.

"...because I couldn't go for 3."

That was a dig...not respect...and it came back to bite him in the tail.

The condescending tone in which you are claiming is, I guess, in the perception of the listener. Feel free to take offense, but it was a joke in my eyes.

Weren't 90% of Woody's antics mental games to fire up his team? I don't see a difference here...

...and if he did do that, most fans would applaud him. What is the difference between the two scenarios?

It was a joke, but not a funny one. I'm sure he wasn't trying to disparage Ohio State or anything like that. But, ummm..... Ohio State is a little sensitive right now about our academics because of the erroneous perception created by the media.

How would JoePa feel if Herbie had said, "I'm surprised that at your age, you even remembered I went to Ohio State." It could have been said in a good-natured manner, but I'm sure JoePa would have been a little sensitive about it.
