Jim Tressel won’t start his new job at the University of Akron until May 1, but he showed up this week for what he cheerfully called “fact-finding.”

On Thursday, he wanted to get the lay of the land, literally, and toured campus at the side of four enthusiastic student orientation leaders under postcard-blue skies.

“I couldn’t have envisioned this,” he said at one point as he struggled to orient himself to the new campus, which has undergone more than $600 million in improvements over the past decade. “This is unbelievable.”

The former Ohio State football coach already had some familiarity with campus: He earned a master’s degree from UA in 1977 and was an assistant football coach and physical education instructor from 1975 to 1978.

Those were the olden days, Tressel recollected to his tour guides, when dinosaurs seemingly roamed the earth.

UA’s new vice president of strategic engagements shared many stories with his guides.

How he and the other coaches treated prospective players and their parents to a deluxe spread of glazed doughnuts, orange juice and milk.

How he lived at the Buchtel Field House because he couldn’t afford more.

How his father ordered him to go to UA for his graduate degree when he already had an offer from Penn State’s Joe Paterno and really, really wanted to go there.

“He said I’d have more opportunities here, and I did,” Tressel told the students.

He led his tour guides on an impromptu walk off campus to the old field house on Wheeler Street — once home base to the university’s football team. After 35 years, not surprisingly, he couldn’t quite remember which streets to turn on.

But Tressel did remember that they didn’t have much equipment to train with, dumbfounding students used to rock-climbing walls and lazy rivers.

Times were tough in those days, he told them.

“The only excuse you had for missing class was a death in the family,” he said. “Your own.”

Tressel on campus at Akron, still sporting sweater vest
Business First
Date: Friday, April 6, 2012

Former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel starts his new job as vice president for strategic engagements at the University of Akron on May 1.

Former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel was scouting the campus this week at the University of Akron, where he'll start a new job as a vice president next month, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Tressel agreed to be the university's vice president of strategic engagements starting May 1, the newspaper reports. Four students gave the former football coach a campus tour on Thursday.

Notably, Tressel hasn't given up the trademark vest that sparked a nickname and T-shirts while he was coach at Ohio State, but his new attire has his new school's logo, the newspaper reports.

Tressel was warm and welcoming when approached, but it was clear he didn?t want to talk football.

For instance, when asked if he had a chance to watch the Buckeyes? spring game last weekend, he said: ?I?ve moved to Akron, so, no, I didn?t have the chance.?

Asked if he?s spoken with current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer lately, Tressel said: ?Not this spring, he?s been working 100 miles an hour and so am I.?

So what is Tressel working on in his new role at Akron?

?The basic thing is working hard to create student success programs, that?s No. 1,? he said. ?We?re working to develop relationships with business partners, we?re working in development and alumni relations. Basically I?m a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.?

That sucks....I like when JT talks football.

I'd prefer that he not talk about Ohio State football for the time being. The fact that he's still being sought for comment shows that Jim Tressel and his decade of success at OSU can still cast a bit of a shadow on the new staff - even on a star like Coach Meyer. I'd rather he stay clear of the situation for now and let the team go forward unfettered by his comments from afar. There will be a time and a place for him to take on the Head Coach Emeritus role, but now is not that time.

Does Coach Tressel have an affiliation ban from Ohio State like TP?

Nope. TP got a 5-year 'disassociation' self-imposed by the university', and booster Bobby DiGeronimo got a 10-year 'disassociation', but JT received a 5-year 'show cause' order from the NCAA which restricts him from coaching at an NCAA institution during that period.

Former OSU Coach Jim Tressel Talks About His New Job
Wednesday May 2, 2012

AKRON, Ohio - The man who was once the most recognizable name in Ohio college football, has started his new job on another Ohio campus.

Jim Tressel is now the Vice President for Strategic Engagement at the University of Akron.

Tressel talked about making the transition from being a Buckeye to a Zip on Tuesday.

Tressel said that people still call him coach and that's just fine, ONN's Cristin Severance reported.

"That's something I take as a compliment because I feel like a coach is a teacher and that it is a 24 hour job," said Tressel from his new office at Buchtel Halll.

Tressel won't have have any involvement in the Akron football program. He also will not be on the sidelines.

"No, I won't get to call any plays or run any practices or blow any whistles," Tressel said. "I won't get to come to work in a sweat suit part of the time either."

A sweater vest, however, is hanging in his office closet.

"I've got the University of Akron sweater vest right here, but as you know it's not a sweater vest kind of day here in Northeast Ohio, it's a little warm," Tressel joked.
