Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

I'm looking forward to what coach Meyer is going to bring to the table for our program and no doubt he is the man for the head coaching position at this great university. In saying that though, I'm just young enough where the Cooper era wasn't that meaningful to me (thank god) and while I know Woody is always considered the gold standard Jim Tressel will always come to my mind first when I think of the head coaches at OSU.

Always great to see coach again.

What can you say? I love UFM as our new coach....it's just unreal to think that after every thing he's done as a coach, coming to tOSU, JT has left behind some pretty big shoes to fill.

I started watching Ohio State Football back in 1957 as they won the Rose Bowl 10 - 7 against Oregon and that was the start of my great interest in
the Buckeyes. I've been thru all the coaches since then - Woody, Earl, Coop,
and then the era of Jim Tressel which was the most memorable i will ever know.

It still hurts deep inside to think that Tress is gone. My passion for Ohio State football will always be in my heart and especially what Coach Tressel
did for this University. I guess i really feel this way because of my friendship
with him way back when he was at Youngstown State. The pride that he brought to the city of Youngstown then is the same pride that he gave to he city of Columbus. Now we have Urban Meyer to look forward to and i can only hope, as someone said, "he sure has big shoes to fill" and that is saying alot. I just hope that Urban can have the character and way to teach football
and be a great example for all the good football players at Ohio State. Only time will tell.

Tressel talks of high-tech effort to help UA students
By Carol Biliczky

Published: July 19, 2012

Jim Tressel told an appreciative crowd Thursday at the Akron Roundtable that the University of Akron wants to give students everything they need to succeed in work and in life.

The UA vice president of strategic engagement said he is helping to develop the Akron Experience ? the personalized journey for success that the university aims to handcraft for each student.

For the last six weeks, Tressel has overseen 11 students who have developed a mobile phone application called Successful U that should be ready by the fall semester in August.

Tressel focused on the app during his 25-minute talk before the luncheon crowd of more than 500.

But he also veered off into comments on his approach to life. He punctuated his speech with jokes and friendly jabs at fellow UA staff members.

?I?ve always been a believer that paradise is where I am,? he said in his seemingly off-the-cuff speech.

In introducing Tressel, UA Provost Mike Sherman said, ?It was academics that brought Jim back to Akron.?

Sherman was referring to Tressel?s stretch as a graduate assistant and assistant coach at UA in the late 1970s before moving on to other colleges and universities to perfect his football coaching skills.

When Tressel left his job at Ohio State under a cloud last year, UA quickly brought him back in a newly created job to do what he has spent a lifetime doing ? working with students.

?I used to have 100 [kids],? he said. ?Now I have about 30,000.?

Tressel Reflects on OSU Days, OSU Legacy
By Patrick Maks

The last ten years of Jim Tressel?s world came rushing back in the form of snippets of memories from a past life.

As about a dozen of his past players surprised the former Ohio State coach and reminisced about their time as Buckeye at a June 24 charity social in Columbus, Ohio, Tressel became lost in the moment.

And it wasn?t just because he says he hates being in the spotlight.

?You know, as those guys were up there talking, I?m not sure that I heard exactly what they said because kind of my life with them was flashing by,? he said.

Youngstown State names new indoor practice facility after Tressel
Business First
Date: Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel's name now sits atop a new indoor practice and athletic facility on the campus of Youngstown State University, where he made his coaching name before going to the Buckeyes, the Vindicator in Youngstown reports.

The university has opened the Watson and Tressel Training Site, an $11 million climate-controlled facility that includes a football field, batting cages, 300-meter track and training room, the newspaper reports. The university on Tuesday honored donors who contributed $4 million to the facility.

Tressel won four national championships during a career that stretched from 1986 to 2000 at YSU, the newspaper reports. Last year, Tressel left coaching after a tattoos-for-memorabilia scandal cost him his job at OSU. He now works for the University of Akron.

Tressel?s role at UA becoming more defined
By Carol Biliczky
Beacon Journal staff writer
Published: August 8, 2012

The University of Akron created a new job for ex-Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel this spring.

His duties are becoming clearer.

As vice president of strategic engagement, Tressel is involved in virtually everything tied to student success ? from advising them about classes to finding them jobs when they graduate, he told university trustees at their meeting Wednesday.

?We?re providing a large chunk of the services to the student,? he said.

Tressel said he has not bothered to count the number of employees reporting to him in counseling and career services, financial aid, admissions, learning communities and more. Some of those functions had been housed under Charlie Fey, vice president of student engagement.

Fey?s job now focuses on residence halls, fraternities and sororities, clubs, the rec center and more.

?His job is the activity side of the house, and ours is the student success side,? Tressel said.

Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel instills team concept at Beachwood schools convocation

Jim Tressel, vice president for strategic engagement at the University of Akron, speaks to Beachwood schools staff during the district's convocation Aug. 27 at Beachwood Middle School. The former Ohio State football coach related to staff members, based on his coaching experience, how they can become better educators.

BEACHWOOD -- The team concept that works so well for successful athletes can also be applied to the classroom.

That was the message Jim Tressel, former head football coach at Ohio State University, tried to convey when he spoke to Beachwood schools staff during the district?s convocation Aug. 27 at Beachwood Middle School.

Tressel, 59, began a new role in April as vice president for strategic engagement at the University of Akron, where he works on programs that promote student success.

He talked about athletes who excelled in this year?s Summer Olympics and their ?attitude of gratitude.?

?That?s what those Olympians talked a lot about ? the role so many other people played,? he said. ?The gratitude they had for their teammates and their coaches and their supporters; it just seemed to be the ultimate team representation.

?Yes, they had extraordinary talents, but they made it real clear when they were being interviewed their accomplishment was a team accomplishment.?

As Beachwood staff members prepared for the first day of school Aug. 29, ?every single member of this team has a chance to make a difference,? Tressel said.

?I would challenge you today, as we go into this school year, let?s make sure it has that feeling of the Olympics, that ?Wow, this is a team,? ? he said. ?Let?s make sure every one of those young people know that our focus is on caring for them.?

Influenced by father

Tressel said he learned that valuable lesson from his father, Lee Tressel, longtime football coach and athletic director at Baldwin-Wallace College. Tressel, who grew up in Berea, was a standout quarterback under his father at B-W, graduating in 1975.

?My dad had a quote that he tried to live by: ?They don?t care how much you know, until they know how much you care,? ? he said. ?That?s the beauty of the team.

?Every person in this room can make sure that young person knows, no matter where they are in the school system, ?Wow, these people care about me.? ?
