this kind of thing always reminds me of the story about bobby carpenter complaining on a bus ride to penn state. as the story goes the ac had gone out and it was rather hot. the senior carpenter was sitting in the back of the bus complaining about the heat. jt, sitting in the front, calmly and quietly got up and walked to the back of the bus to carpenter. he then leaned down and whispered in bobby's ear, "shut the fuck up". carpenter didn't say another word the rest of the trip.
i wasn't there, i have no idea if this actually happened. but things other players have said make me think that if it isn't true its based on actual events. one of troy smith's interviews during his senior season comes to mind. when speaking about jt's coaching style he said something along the lines of , he doesn't yell or anything like that. he just gives you that look like you better get it right, we better get it right.
when i look at jt, i see the father figure that doesn't say much. he doesn't say much because he doesn't have to, when he speaks everyone listens. he doesn't need to throw his playbook or spit his gum on people or scream and curse. as troy smith noted, all he has to do is look at you. a simple look conveys more than any sideline tirade.
when one of our players makes a mistake they aren't afraid of getting yelled at or benched. they are afraid of looking to their coach and seeing disappointment.
