Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Saw this in the last installment of Bucket of Bullets, and figured this was the most appropriate place for it:

As a veteran, I wanted to do something on Tuesday as a sign of respect for those who served our country, so I went to the Statehouse to see the display honoring the Lima Company men killed and to say a prayer.

As I was viewing one of the full-size paintings of three who died when they hit a roadside bomb, I realized that a tall man stood next to me observing the same painting. I recognized him as Ohio State University quarterback, Terrelle Pryor. When I looked around, I noticed a large contingent of OSU football players.

As coach Jim Tressel came to the center of the Rotunda, his men gathered behind him, and they all took a knee and said a prayer of their own. They were there for about 15 minutes and then left together.

This was such a classy thing to do, especially considering no media were there to cover it. It was not their intention to be rewarded with some kind of publicity. It was merely a wonderful, solemn gesture on their part to pay their respects without the expectation of being recognized in some way for doing so. We always hear about the negative aspects of a team but seldom hear about the good.

True, but it was already posted as an e-mail in this thread on Nov 13th, by Bleed S&G.

I agree that people will remember Tressel's YSU years, but not for the reason you mention. By the time Tressel retires, his years at YSU will have been a long time in the past. But people will still be adding +4 to his National Championships at The Ohio State University. That will keep reminding people of his time in the lower division.

And to another question: Yes, Division I wins are counted; both I-A and I-AA. Calling them FBS and FCS instead is unlikely to change that.

actually, one last point i wanted to make about this: the vast majority of joepa and bowden's wins have come in D-I, which is another reason why i think people are more willing to count the other wins toward their total. because Tressel has had most of his wins at YSU, that makes his case a little more difficult to argue for.

with all of that said though, i think you're right in saying the NC's he got at YSU are probably the most impressive aspect of his record; going through the playoff system and still managing 4 NC's is amazing at any level.

and, in honor of Tressel's b-day, here's a cool blast from the past i found on youtube (hope it hasn't been posted already)
