Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

not only that D has never been their prob. The letting Tom Allen walk for 1.9 million then paying Knowles out the wazzo is weird though

This might honestly be Franklins downfall. D will take a noticeable step back next year. Knowles has to get to year 3 for it to really work. With a meh offense and hot & cold D for 2 years they could wind up losing 3-4 games and missing the playoffs in 2025 and 2026.

Also don’t forget……something strange happened to our defense when we went up 28-7 vs Notre Dame. ND started shredding us. Same thing that Michigan did…..

perhaps Day saw that big time teams had started to figure out Knowles’ D
The coaches changed the offense almost entirely and made smaller changes on D. Tennessee had no chance. Oregon had 1 game of tape and some uncertainty if it was an outlier. Texas was able to better prepare and was a talent and game plan win. ND just showed that they really didn’t belong.

Penn State is good but still a step down from OSU

One doesn’t take a step down without one or a combo of these things:
1. About to be fired or new HC coming in - no
2. Friction with the the HC - possible
3. Significantly more money - no
4. Stepping stone to bigger gig or NFL - no

it has to be friction with the situation between He - RD - LJ.

Watching his body language leading up to CFP….in the CFP….interviews……he has always been a tough read but showed some smiling and spark….just a little…..but in the CFP he seemed all business and even pissed off a bit. I think this has been snowballing like people say….back to the UO game. Where he was going to land was a function of how they finished the season. 1 and done in CFP…..Oklahoma. Deep run or Natty - elite or very high level program - BINgO

The ND game I saw had them gashing our D for the first drive (no biggie as adjustments were made)…..but most of the 2nd half. ND absolutely belonged along with Texas.

Knowles is a good DC but he's far from irreplaceable.

Remember it took a few years for his D to really take for and that was with a loaded talent roster at his disposal. Ped State is probably gonna expect immediate results and be disappointed.
If OSU was the “Natty or bust” this season, then Ped St is in the same boat next season. Returning QB, both RBs and multiple OL, not sure about their defense. But they are Expecting an NC after seeing scUM and OSU win it the last 2yrs. And no matter who they bring in to lead the defense, Allar is not very good and will continually cost them big games

So this tells me that if Knowles had 100% control over the D that we wouldn’t have a title right now. I’m happy Day stepped in.

Yeah, who does he even have to throw to next year. Warren to the NFL and top two WR’s transferred.

The problem with their Natty or bust is their D isn't the issue. Paying Jim Knowles will at best take them what 5 to 1 in D. The far bigger problem vs Notre Dame was no WRs with a reception what are they doing about that?

Carter (12 sacks) is gone

2 starting DTs gone

Their "defensive QB" and best LB Kobe King is gone.

And they lose 2 starters in the secondary.

They have a couple decent guys coming back but it's definitely not a whole defense returning type situation.
