He then took three years to build a dominant defense.

How much of it was the blend of players and scheme we will never know but he isn’t going to turn them into the ‘85 Bears over night. He needed Downs and an unbelievable amount of senior talent to build a great defense in year 3 and even then, it was worked like a $2 whore by the only elite offense it saw before the playoff run.

He is a very good coach but the only one I legitimately think is irreplaceable is Hartline.

Well he did the same at okie state but you’re right he’s not going to have what he had here. Won’t have the 4 man pressure from the front so he’s going by to have to blitz. When he does that he’ll go back to the same defense from 2022 that couldn’t get off the field and couldn’t stop the back breaking plays.

The style he played the last two years should’ve been his queue that sometimes it’s good to evolve.

This is a very SEC-like move. As you may have noticed over the years, they steal each other’s OCs and DCs all the time. Perhaps it was a part of our evolution to replace the SEC as the top conference.

Day has built up a helluva good staff. If we don’t have any more losses, I’d say that is a big win. I’d look at Jim Leonhard, Ryan Walters, and Rob Harley as possible successor’s to Day. The problem is that MG may bolt if We land a young DC…..and all of these guys are.

Go to Oklahoma that’s fine but to a direct in conference competitor? That’s a big fuck you to OSU.

Maybe that’s what he wanted but he also forgets that he just told his former players that too.

I am not sure this is fair. It was obvious they implemented a more prevent defense with the big lead. Have to give ND credit for making plays. Plus, the long playoff really showed what a toll it took on the D. They were gassed.

Overall, OSU excelled with Knowles, but it is what it is, and truthfully would love to have a more pro style defense down the road, which is easier to interchange in these situations. That is why I am for promoting Matt G and making Walton Co-DC because he was a DC and also a NFL guy.
