The question I have regarding the accuser's veracity (and I don't know the answer) is this: How common is it for women who are fabricating an accusation of rape to also present themselves at a hospital to experience the scintillating fun of a rape kit examination?

Trial by media is one of my least favorite things about our culture, and they have certainly been known to get it abysmally wrong (Richard Jewell). That said, the sequence of events lends credence to this young woman's claim for me. I hope the truth will prevail.

Okay, I am going to go with this in generalities only because I participated in a huge "why we have weird rape laws" thing in law school. For what it's worth, I was against many of the "rape shield" laws at the time, and may be now. . . I'm not sure.

Anyway. . .

A large majority of rape reports are real.

A larger majority of rape reports are not reported.

A larger majority of reported rape reports are not prosecuted ("he said she said").

An enormous majority (pretty much all) of rape reports where the woman submits to a rape kit are real.

An enormous majority (pretty much all) of rapes reported within 8 hours are real.

All I remember is FBI and other stats were involved in this. The focus was on why rape victims get special privileges as victims in court. Also, there was quite a bit of information about the fact that a huge number of false rapes are also reported each year. But see above to see if it is likely in this case. But hey, who knows. This whole case is very strange and I sincerely don't believe we should rush to any judgments on it. Something is amiss. Once you throw in all the crazy factors of this case, all "norms" go out the window, perhaps.

Edited out before I posted my remark was the additional consideration that she went in for the exam in a sufficiently timely manner for them to obtain a viable DNA sample. So, if this was just a case of "buyer's remorse" post consensual sex, it manifested in an awfully big hurry.

State Attorney Willie Meggs on Monday reiterated he won't let FSU's football schedule or Winston's Heisman Trophy possibilities determine when his investigation will be completed.

Just sayin': He didn't comment that potential threats to himself and/or his family, and that it would be political suicide* would dictate/influence his decision whether to indict Winston or not

Before this story broke, Meggs had already announced he would not seek another term.
