Exactly what I was saying with regard to college sports except said better... albeit one minute after me.

Of course it is. I went to Ohio State for undergrad and Akron for grad school. When they play, I cheer for Ohio State. But I show enormous support for the Zips and their athletic programs. Other considerations come into play as well when you talk about family members or friends attending other universities.

But, for me, Ohio State is still #1 and I think you have to have a #1 university.

Absolutely not. And I say that without exception. Even though the line is sometimes blurred, there is still a difference between college and professional sports team. I am a fan of Ohio State, the university and its athletic department. If I were just a fan of Ohio State football, I'm treating them as a glorified professional team, not as part of a university.

To cheer for two different universities based upon which sport they are playing is sports bigamy and sports bandwagon at its worst. When is the last time you heard someone say they were a fan of Indiana football and Penn State basketball? Never. Why? Because they both suck. You only hear about people liking Ohio State/Notre Dame/USC/Michigan football and Duke/Kentucky/Syracuse/UCLA basketball. Pure bandwagon BS there and it is definately not Ok.

If you only had 11, they'd all have to play both ways. Plus, I'm not sure he's built for the line. Just sayin....

Seriously, I mean, I can see a game being 2-0. But, if the other team scores a TD.. or even a FG, it's gotta be impossible to win with nothing but 2 point scores.

I like to vary who I root for, just to mix things up.

In the '60s I was a fan of the Packers, Celtics, Yankees, and Canadiens.

In the '70s I was a fan of the Steelers, Knicks, Reds, and Canadiens.

In the '80 I was a fan of the 49ers, Lakers, Dodgers, and Islanders (but I swiched to the Oilers in the middle).

In the '90s I was a fan of the Cowboys, Bulls, Yankees, and Red Wings.

The past decade I've been for the Patriots, Spurs, Red Sawx, and the Devils.

Some call me a fair-weather fan, but I'm extremely loyal to whichever team is in first place.

And lately I'm starting to like Canada in the Winter Olympic sports, since Russia got all split up.

I would say that I'm a moderate fan of Nevada because I grew up in Reno. Were they ever to play Ohio State in anything, there wouldn't be the slightest bit of divided loyalties.

Beyond that, there's always been schools that I root for and against, but in no way would I consider myself a "fan" of any of them.

Root For:
All Big Ten teams OOC
All real Big Ten teams when playing Penn State
Texas and Washington---Big Ten schools in all but geography
Carolina over Duke
Cal over Stanford
UCLA over USC
Army and Navy over Air Force

Root Against:
The SEC
Notre Dame
The Cheaters: Oklahoma, The U, USC, Nebraska, the SEC
Duke
The Big East in basketball
USC
The Thumper Schools: Baylor, BYU and Oral Roberts

I'm a bit late to the party. I typed this a few hours ago, but interruptions and a classroom full of students prevented me from sending this sooner. My two cents:

This topic resurfaces regularly because the acquisition of allegiance is sometimes rational, sometimes arbitrary. Since there's no accounting for taste, I suppose we'll never reach a consensus. Nonetheless, there are sound reasons to be a Buckeye fan and not be torn between two lovers.

I am a life-long Ohio native. I was born a Buckeye. Woody Hayes and Ohio State football trumped everything growing up, long before I thought about where I would attend college. I subsequently graduated from the University of Toledo, and while I always rooted for Rocket sports teams, Buckeye football was, and still is, the epitome of college football. I lived through the 10-Year War, near the border of enemy territory, and there was never any place for ambivalence.

Buckeye football represents the state of Ohio and I'm a Buckeye. Period. I wear my hat with the block-O with pride. I'm a product of everything Ohio and the Buckeyes are my team. People contend that I shouldn't take it so personally, but it's a big part of the reason why it severely pisses me off when Ohioans root for TSUN. It just isn't right.

I live in NW Ohio and so I must endure an unfair share of M*ch*g*n fandom. I can't go to the grocery store or a HS basketball game without seeing a hat or a sweatshirt from TSUN. It grates on me. I mean, hey, you don't root for Canada or Mexico in the Olympics just because they're nearby. Right? It's un-American. What would Woody have said?

A friend from Arizona asked me if I was conflicted when the Buckeyes played the Rockets this past season. As far as I'm concerned, it is a privilege for a non-Big Ten team just to get beat by the Buckeyes. Not the slightest bit of conflict for me. College football in Ohio is Buckeye football. You can only have one king. Every other football program in the state (college, HS, etc.) serves Ohio State University football. Arrogant? Perhaps. But that's the way I like it.

I had a military co-worker about 3-4 years ago who was born and raised in Idaho, so his favorite college football team was Michigan and his favorite college basketball team was North Carolina. Why? Because Idaho didn't have shit for college teams and he liked the uniforms of Michigan and North Carolina. If I were born in Idaho, I think I'd probably would've picked out-of-state teams to follow, also...
