Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

9-4 loss to the M's. Huff has been awfully unimpressive this year. He reminds me in many ways of Sowers and that is not a good thing. Fortunately, after all the trades the past two years, there's quite a bit of depth in the system.

Next year I'm hoping to see a rotation something along these lines to start (in no particular order):
Carmona
Westbrook
Laffey
Masterson
Rondon
Excellent summary and I totally agree with you regarding the fact that Laffey and Masterson might be better middle relievers than starters or at least one of them. Huff and Sowers seem to be a mirror images of each other. I don't think that Scott Lewis will make it back from arm surgery. I think he had another setback a couple nights ago. I also think that Westbrook along with Carmona probably holds the key to the entire rotation. If Westbrook does not make it back, we might be in for a world of hurt again.

I would give Crowe the starting position in left field and see what Laporta can do at first base. There isn't much power there but you have to live with what you have. I guess it looks like you are ready to live with JP at third base again next season. I don't know why you could get for him in a trade but if he starts off again next season like he did this we need to have someone ready to take his place. Also, I have a hard time living with Shopach. He is okay as a backup but I really would like to see one of the other guys get more playing time. I cannot believe that Wedge used him in the DH position last night. I also would like to see a change of managers and would not mind seeing the guy from Columbus given a chance.

At least the young guys are enjoyable to watch and are able to run to first base at a reasonable speed I like some of the guys we just got rid of.

4-3 come from behind win courtesy of Luis Valbuena. The bullpen tossed FOUR scoreless innings. Amazing what happens once you purge all of Shapiro's Ricky Martin fantasies from out there.

I'd think there's gonna be a good bit of competition for roster/starting spots next spring. It's kind of hard to say who competes where with whom until we see what (if any) moves are made this winter. Again, I'm not sure how serious they are about LaPorta at 1B, they may go the cheap vet FA route. Jordan Brown may be a possibility too. But, I'd look for Crowe and maybe Brantley to be in the mix for an starting job if LaPorta does go the 1B route. They may also bring in a cheap vet FA there. I have to say that Crowe has done little to impress me in the time he's been given. He looks like a fifth OF to me.

As for Peralta, yeah another year. I don't see him holding much trade value and I'm not sure they'd want to move him. At this point he's at most a placeholder until Chisenhall is ready perhaps sometime in 2011. I really like what I've seen from Chisenhall and think he's a better prospect than Andy Marte ever was, but he still hasn't performed anywhere outside of A ball yet. He's struggling in Akron right now, but lets hope he doesn't flame out. It's too bad Hodges couldn't stay healthy and get it together this year. I know Peralta has (a few) fans, and while he puts up decent numbers for a SS, he gives < average production from 3B and is just too wildly inconsistent for me to consider him a part of any longterm plans. I think the FO will feel that way as well once Mongo is out of the dugout. However, trading him right now does nothing because I doubt he brings much in return and it leaves another hole. You could say Jamey Carroll there (if he's back) and while he has hit very well this year, I don't think those numbers remain on that trajectory if he plays fulltime. Besides, he's a punch and judy hitter, not exactly what you want at 3B, but he's a great utility guy/occasional starter.

As for Shoppach, I think he's passable as a platoon catcher. If Santana is ready, he's a switch hitter who (I believe) has better splits vs. Righties, while Shoppach performs better vs. lefties. That has potential until Santana is ready for a fulltime load. Of course, they may want Santana to log some time in AAA before coming up to the big club, but if he has a big spring, maybe he gets a shot straight away.

tsteele, I'm curious about your thoughts moving forward if you find the time.

For those unaware of it, here's a great site for keeping up with the Tribe's farm system. A lot of info and daily updates in there...

Indians Prospect Insider

From that site Re: Carlos Carrasco:

In five starts, Carrasco is now 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA for Columbus. He has pitched into the seventh inning in each of his last four starts, and into the eighth inning in three of his starts. In his 35.1 innings with Columbus he has allowed 27 hits, six walks, and has 33 strikeouts. Prior to joining the Indians, in 20 starts for the Phillies affiliate Lehigh Valley he did not pitch into the eighth inning in a single outing, yet in three of his five starts with Columbus he has done so. He is seemingly getting stronger and better with each outing, and his confidence may be at an all time high. With his performance to date, the Indians and fans right now are seeing exactly what made him a Top 50 prospect in all of baseball coming into this year.

I think a lot of people read too much into his ERA when the trade went down. He has really good stuff and isn't far off from being ML ready. He may compete for a spot in the rotation next spring.

Here's a blurp on the walking infirmary that is Adam Miller...

- Right-hander Adam Miller is recovering well from the recent second surgery on his right middle (long) finger. Assuming all goes well, the recovery process is expected to take about 8 to 12 weeks before he can start any kind of throwing program and throw a baseball for the first time since this past spring. At this point it is way too early to determine if he will ever pitch again, and more on that front won't really be known until he starts to throw for the first time this winter, likely sometime in late-November. Right now he is doing strengthening exercises on the finger to help with the buildup of scar tissue and also relearning the motor skills in the muscles in the finger, such as making a fist and holding it or picking up small delicate objects. The hope is he will be ready to go in the spring, but even if that is the case he likely won't factor into the big league equation and will probably start the year on the disabled list as he continues his rehab.

Indians take game 1 in KC 10-6

Marte extends his miracle hit streak to 5 games

Luis Valbuena 3 run HR off of Joakim Soria, hes really came along after struggling at the start

LaPorta has hit in every game since being called up
