Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

in defense of his suckiness, one of the hits was a 3-2 pitch that was clearly a ball and he tried to check his swing and ended up with a swinging bunt.

:slappy: you take what you get with him, anytime he actually gets on base is a miracle in itself

but yea, hes still really shitty

and the same thing could ahve been said when cleveland traded for sizemore, lee, and astrubral.

and marte, until this year, never put up minor league numbers like laporta.
please:( there are plenty of guys who have put up big numbers in the minors, including LaPorta, who put up numbers similar to Marte once they they get to the majors. The guys that we got for Colon were probably the exception to any trade especially since all three of them have turned out to be solid major-league players.

Nice to see he remembered how to get to first from somewhere other than the dugout.

or getting astrubral cabrera for eduardo perez or shin soo choo for ben broussard?

the bottom line is all of these guys were far more productive in the minors than marte. marte's only claim to fame was being very young in the league he was in and producing average numbers. the average numbers never improved with age save for this year, which given his performance in the majors, looks like an abberation.

so, to try to apply the marte factor to every highly rated minor league prospect cleveland trades for is disingenuous at best.

Another thing that should be noted is that Marte's stock was already dropping when he was acquired by the Indians. He had been called up by ATL the prior year and had basically no success. I'm sure most scouts saw the holes in his swing that still remain. If he had not already been exposed somewhat, I highly doubt the Indians would have been able to get him for Coco. That being said, I have no problems with that trade being made by the Indians. Coco really did not fit in CLE as Grady had CF locked down, there was a clear weak spot in the organization at 3rd base and Marte was still young enough that it was reasonable to think that his flaws could be corrected. It hasn't really worked out as hoped but the Tribe didn't lose on that trade.

The "crown jewel" of that trade flamed out in Cleveland. Granted, he's turned out to be pretty good for the Reds, but he was a major flop for the Tribe.

9-4 loss to the M's. Huff has been awfully unimpressive this year. He reminds me in many ways of Sowers and that is not a good thing. Fortunately, after all the trades the past two years, there's quite a bit of depth in the system.

Next year I'm hoping to see a rotation something along these lines to start (in no particular order):
Carmona
Westbrook
Laffey
Masterson
Rondon

If somebody falters, Carrasco has looked really good in Columbus and guys like Scott Lewis, Sowers, Scott Lewis, Lofgren, Huff, etc, will be there to get looks.

I'm still not positive guys like Laffey and Masterson aren't better off in the pen, but we'll have to see if they follow their annual tradition of bringing in a cheap retread starter via FA. Also, Carmona NEEDS to get his head straight and become at least somewhat consisitent. His control is still very spotty. Hopefully he's ready to work hard this offseason because he's going to be needed bigtime next season. He's shown the ability to be a very good ML pitcher, he just needs to continue to refine his game and rediscover that moxie he showed for most of 2007 and into the first few weeks of '08.

As for the BP, there's a handful of guys that will be vying for spots:
Wood
R. Perez
C. Perez
Sipp
J. Smith
J. Lewis
Todd
etc.

There's more talent there than in a while and they're due to catch some brakes on that front after two mostly awful years, so maybe it won't be all that bad.

On offense, we could look something like this:
1B-LaPorta/FA?
2B-Valbuena
SS-AsCab
3B-Peralta
LF-Brantley (?)/LaPorta
CF-Grady
RF-Choo
C-Shoppach/Santana/Marson
DH-Pronk/Shoppach

Now, I don't know how serious they are about LaPorta (who has looked pretty good in his 2 games since coming back up) at 1B, he could just as easily end up in LF as Brantley has been decent but not particularly good this year in Columbus. They may go the bargain bin veteran FA direction at 1B, though I don't know of many available. One thing's for sure, with low expectations going in, next season should be more fun as an influx of youth should be fun to watch. I'm still praying they bring in a compitent manager. Wedge is terrible at handling youth and his indecisiveness in picking a consistent lineup could grind a lot of potential development to a halt. I'm a fan of Torey Lovullo in Columbus if they don't go the veteran route.

I'm a little more optimistic going forward than I've been in a while. Not "challenge for the division" optimistic necessarily, but with a few breaks, this team might not be as fucking awful as I (and many others) thought and could even shoot for .500 if the rotation can just be adequate and the bullpen can avoid becoming the comedy troupe they've been for a large majority of 2007/08. That's pretty good considering they've traded away the ace (2 aces if you count C.C. last summer) and one of the longtime cornerstones of the offense. Of course it could all blow up in their face and we could have another 2003 on our hands, but considering the scale of the rebuild here, I wouldn't be mortified if that happened.
