Indians recall LaPorta, send Crowe to DL
Top prospect likely to see action in the outfield in return
CLEVELAND -- The Indians hoped to have Trevor Crowe back in their lineup Wednesday night. Instead, Crowe is making his first trip to the disabled list and making room for top prospect Matt LaPorta to come back to the big leagues from Triple-A Columbus.
Crowe landed on the DL with a right internal oblique strain that has been bothering him for about a week. He took four rounds of batting practice from the left-hand side Tuesday and reportedly tolerated it well, but Wednesday's move makes it clear that the pain had not gone away.
And so a roster move fans have been clamoring for is finally taking place, with LaPorta, the key acquisition in last year's CC Sabathia trade with the Brewers, getting his second opportunity at this level
In 93 games with the Clippers, LaPorta was batting .299 with 17 homers, 23 doubles, two triples and 60 RBIs. He had a .917 OPS.
LaPorta has been primarily a corner outfielder in the past, but the Indians had him starting regularly at first base, because it appears that could be his future home in the Majors. At this time, however, left field is open to him, with Crowe out of the picture.
One reason the Indians hadn't promoted LaPorta sooner is Grady Sizemore's cranky right elbow, which has been bothering him all season. Crowe had the ability to fill in for Sizemore in center field, whereas LaPorta does not. With Crowe gone, Shin-Soo Choo could start to see some time in center, as he's been taking reps at the position in batting practice for a couple weeks.
LaPorta appeared in 13 games for the Indians in May, batting .190 (8-for-42) with a homer and four RBIs.
Crowe was added to the Major League roster for the third time this season on July 31, and he's shown improvement over two previous stints. For the season, he is batting .208 (22-for-106) with six doubles, a triple, no homers and 10 RBIs at the Major League level.
