Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

He's high up on the list of worst Indians ever.

Damn, what did Marte do to you guys? Yes, he hasn't hit well since being called up but I fail to see why you're taking so much out on him. He earned his call up with an excellent season in Columbus. He's not making much money. The Indians didn't really give up much to get him. As for his performance, I'm the first to admit it hasn't been good but in his defense his playing time has been somewhat sporadic. Also, I saw a mention about him not being able to field, considering tonight was his 1st error in 11 games since being called up, I think that's an exaggeration.

He came in with a lot of fanfare and has failed miserably. Despite never showing a lick of ability to play at the ML level, he has been given countless chance. He was on the Tribe roster all of last season and got his first RBI in JULY. Personally, I have nothing against him. I'm sure he's a very pleasant young man, but he is a sad sack of suck as a player.

the thing about marte has been that up until this season in AAA, he's never really put up great numbers. The interest in him has always been that he's put up some respectable numbers in leagues at a very young age. So, the thought process was that as he matured, his productivity would increase. It hasn't. I think it's about time to admit that his ship has sailed.

Marte made a sweet error in the 2nd with 2 outs, that ended up leading to 2 runs

he cant hit, he cant field, hes totally fucking worthless, yet we continue to hang on to him

So you're saying I should sell my Marte rookie card and autograph collection? I can't quite tell what you think of him...

Indians recall LaPorta, send Crowe to DL | MLB.com: News

Indians recall LaPorta, send Crowe to DL

Top prospect likely to see action in the outfield in return

CLEVELAND -- The Indians hoped to have Trevor Crowe back in their lineup Wednesday night. Instead, Crowe is making his first trip to the disabled list and making room for top prospect Matt LaPorta to come back to the big leagues from Triple-A Columbus.

Crowe landed on the DL with a right internal oblique strain that has been bothering him for about a week. He took four rounds of batting practice from the left-hand side Tuesday and reportedly tolerated it well, but Wednesday's move makes it clear that the pain had not gone away.

And so a roster move fans have been clamoring for is finally taking place, with LaPorta, the key acquisition in last year's CC Sabathia trade with the Brewers, getting his second opportunity at this level

In 93 games with the Clippers, LaPorta was batting .299 with 17 homers, 23 doubles, two triples and 60 RBIs. He had a .917 OPS.

LaPorta has been primarily a corner outfielder in the past, but the Indians had him starting regularly at first base, because it appears that could be his future home in the Majors. At this time, however, left field is open to him, with Crowe out of the picture.

One reason the Indians hadn't promoted LaPorta sooner is Grady Sizemore's cranky right elbow, which has been bothering him all season. Crowe had the ability to fill in for Sizemore in center field, whereas LaPorta does not. With Crowe gone, Shin-Soo Choo could start to see some time in center, as he's been taking reps at the position in batting practice for a couple weeks.

LaPorta appeared in 13 games for the Indians in May, batting .190 (8-for-42) with a homer and four RBIs.

Crowe was added to the Major League roster for the third time this season on July 31, and he's shown improvement over two previous stints. For the season, he is batting .208 (22-for-106) with six doubles, a triple, no homers and 10 RBIs at the Major League level.

I totally agree what you have said above but I guess the above is what concerns me about the position players which we have received in trades and other ones that are putting up good numbers at Akron and Kinston including Brantley and Laporta. I mean when Marte was in the Boston organization it was supposed to be the best minor league third baseman around and look what has happened to him when he has a shot at the major league level. We have put a lot of faith in guys are doing pretty well in the Indians organization but you never know when you're going to get another Marte. I will be very interested in seeing what Brantley and Santana do when they are brought up and how Laporta will perform in the next couple months.

That's the game you have to play as a small market team unfortunately. You develop players in your system, then when they get near FA, you trade them for more prospects to develop and hope they pan out. For every V-Mart and Grady Sizemore, there's gonna be an Andy Marte. That's the odds.

I guess the point I was trying to make was that we supposedly got all of these great minor league players when we made our trades but we have to remember that all the numbers that they put up were in the minor leagues like Marte. So we really have no idea what we have because essentially the majority of the players in the Indians organization are unproven until they get to the Majors.

and the same thing could ahve been said when cleveland traded for sizemore, lee, and astrubral.

and marte, until this year, never put up minor league numbers like laporta.
