Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Aaron Laffey is quietly having a great season. 6-3 on a terrible team, with a 3.25 ERA.
Yes he has. Pretty excited for him.

For those of you Tribe fans who are interested (and have STO), Indians owner Paul Dolan will be on All Bets are Off with Bruce Drennan at around 3:45 tomorrow.
OK, so the people on scout are saying that Dolan seemed pretty insistent on "evaluating" Wedge at the end of the season, though he confirmed Shapiro will continue to be the GM.

That would be great.

Barfield was outrighted off of the 40-man roster, went unclaimed on waivers, and will be in C-Bus now. Only 33 players are on the 40 man, September call ups should be fun.

Dammit. I hate how well this team plays in August. 10 of 13.

Shit.
This should come as no surprise. I think we pretty much all called this back in April/May.

It's now essentially a roster of kids playing with no pressure. Even Wedge can win under those circumstances. That said, if he's back next spring, this rebuilding effort is starting off behind the proverbial 8-ball.

Andy "0 for" Marte

has not changed a bit

0/3 3Ks last night

27 ABs 6 Hs 7 Ks .222 since callup
Pretty much what I expected...and I'm sure the rest of you did too. The guy was insane in July: .385 AVG (30-78), 20 R, 11 2B, 0 3B, 9 HR, 24 RBI, 9 BB, 13 K, .448 OBP, .872 SLG. Sadly, he just can't hit ML pitching. At least CoCo didn't become an all-star in Boston or that trade could've been really embarrassing. I think he's just keeping the position warm until LaPorta is ready in a couple weeks. Or at least I hope.

Carrasco with a very nice outing for C-bus last night: 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 K

marte gets played like a fiddle at the plate. his first at bat was priceless. the pitcher threw him inside twice in a row to get him 0-2. he then throws a waste pitch, and then throws a meatball thigh high fastball on the outer half of the plate, and marte looks like tom selleck the first time he saw the Shuto pitch. he clearly has no idea what to do at the plate. but, he's now fighting for a spot next year, so the real marte has come out. when he was relegated to columbus and there was no real pressure, he produced.

there is definately some hope for this team next year, and in the future. a rotation of carmona, westbrook, laffey, masterson, and one of huff/sowers/et.all might not be so bad. if cleveland could just get raffy perez to not be a total bum, then maybe they'd have something going.

by the by, hopefully tony sipp has realized how much easier it is to pitch when he throws strikes.

Little known fact as a first half motivation ploy Wedge gets un updated nudie pick of this chick every season and tells the team that they will take off a piece every game they win before the trading deadline. BTW she's damn near 60.

It certainly looks better than just a couple weeks ago, but there's still a lot of question marks there. I'd like to see a couple more good outings from Carmona before I'm ready to rely on him for much. His control is still spotty from what I've seen. What will Westbrook be good for after 18 months away from the bigs? Laffey has had a nice year, but he's far from a sure thing. I'm still not sure Masterson isn't better off in the bullpen. Hopefully one of Sowers/Huff, etc. can hold down the five spot. There's potential to have a passable rotation, but it could turn into another disaster just as easily. 75-80 wins would be a very good year next season IMO. But if we've learned anything the past few years, trying to forecast how this team will do is pointless. One thing's for sure, if Mongo is still in the dugout, we can expect another slow start.

At least the BP should be better. It certainly can't be any worse than what we were subjected to most of this season.

I think the quote from Dolan speaks volumes about what might happen to Wedge at the end of the season. If he thinks the team is underperforming and should be more successful, the guy at the top must take a hike.

As Cleveland Indians become stagnant, Wedge becomes more vulnerable

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Lost in all the discussion of the Indians trades and the Dolans' millions of losses is the fact the front office is finally admitting something the fans have sensed for a while -- they aren't just a woe-is-me, small-market team, they have been underachievers in the last two seasons.

Or as team president Paul Dolan said, "We have not been successful the last few years with a team that should be successful."

Dolan is absolutely right about that.

Yes, the front office has had some swings and misses in deals. Yes, some veteran players have been traded to cut payroll. But did anyone expect the Indians to have the worst record in the American League, as was the case until a month ago?

Carmona just signed a long term deal last year, then promptly fell apart. I'm waiting to see a few good outings in a row from him. I like Laffey, but I think he'd be best utilized in middle relief. Huff...meh. I see another Sowers in him. Sowers will never be more than a #5 starter, despite a couple of good starts the past few weeks and also might be better suited fr bullpen work. I am excited about Rondon. Todd and Perez look promising, but Sipp needs to get his control together.
While the posts of mine that you quoted, which I've done with a little bit of tongue-in-cheek, regarding signing all of the young pitchers to long-term deals immediately I disagree with you in that I don't think they should put Laffey in middle relief because we are so short of starting pitching and he brings something to the table that Huff and Sowers do not bring. He can put a little more on his fastball than either of those guys. They have finally shut down Westbrook for this season and I have no idea why they were even trying to think of bringing him back this year when we will need him next year if we want to do anything. I know that we have not seen enough of Rondon but if he lives up to is expectations I would like to see him get a shot at starting. I guess we shall see what he brings to the table come September. I think they are going to have to go out and either buy or trade for some fourth/fifth starter and hopefully the guys mentioned above, along with Masterson, will give us a good rotation next season.

I say give him 100 AB's before we make a full decision. With that being said my hopes aren't high :tongue2:

nah, hes had enough chances

career stat line- 540 ABs 114 hits 119 strikeouts .211 AVG .270 OBP

in 500+ MLB at bats hes never show the slightest sign that he can even be an average MLB hitter

5-0 loss to the Rangers. Carmon looked decent again. Still shaky control though.

Marte goes 0-3. :slappy: Just cut him loose already. I'm sure he'll go to Seattle or Texas and become an all star, but it ain't happening in Cleveland.

Raffy Perez back to his sack-o-shit ways. Jess Todd has been pretty shaky. Not sure he's big league ready yet.
