Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Tribe wins. Fuck, part of me likes seeing these guys grinding out wins like this. Another part of me worries it's gonna make a case for Wedge keeping his job. That thought depresses the ever-loving hell out of me. :so:

i don't think there is any saving wedge's job. this season was just too much of a disaster.

I hope so and I think so as well, but I've seen Cleveland franchises do enough stupid shit to give me pause.

it wouldn't surprise me if dolan wouldn't do it just because he would have to pay his contract for next year.

i hope cleveland goes after john farrell instead of some retread. if there was ever an up and comer that was deserving, it's him.

That's a name I like as well.

Arizona Fall League Participants Announced

Posted by Tony at 12:56 AM
The Arizona Fall League (AFL) rosters were released on Tuesday, and while there are still some changes to be made to the rosters, the Indians at this point will be sending seven players to the AFL this year:

RHP Connor Graham
RHP Josh Judy
RHP Zach Putnam
INF Josh Rodriguez
1B/OF Matt McBride
INF Carlos Rivero
OF Nick Weglarz

They will play for the Peoria Saguaros who will be managed by former Indian David Bell. Low-A Lake County Hitting Coach Jim Rickon will assist Bell. The Indians have the option to send one player from below Double-A, and that is still yet to be determined on who that will be, if they even send anyone from below Double-A. There is still a possibility that 2009 1st round pick RHP Alex White is sent to the AFL at some point. The season begins October 13th and ends on November 21st.

Also, as an FYI, the Hawaii Winter League officially closed up shop last year since MLB pulled out and no longer would back the winter league there. Supposedly they are looking to have an additional fall/winter league stateside to complement the AFL, which could possibly be held in Arizona and run after the AFL concludes or be run at another location.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have acquired right-hander Yohan Pino from Minnesota, completing the trade that sent Carl Pavano to the Twins.

The Indians sent Pavano to the Twins on Aug. 7 for a player to be named. That turned out to be the 25-year-old Pino, who has split this season between Double-A New Britain and Triple-A Rochester. Pino has gone a combined 7-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 40 games.

The Venezuela native will report to Triple-A Columbus and start for the Clippers on Tuesday.

Scout.com: Scouting Twins Prospect #36: Yohan Pino

Repetoire: Fastball, Curveball, Slider

Fastball: Pino does not overwhelm batters with his fastball, but he does have the ability to spot it wherever he wants. His fastball sits in the mid-to-high 80s, and he uses it to set up some great off-speed stuff. While his fastball is not a putaway pitch, it does seem faster when mixed in with the rest of his arsenal.

Other Pitches: Pino has a great curveball and slider, and it is used to rack up strikeouts. A pitcher who does not throw that hard is not supposed to have such a great strikeout to innings pitched ratio, but Pino knows his pitches, and uses them to their full potential. He has great command over his entire arsenal, and he is only going to get better as he begins to fill out his 6’3’’ frame.

Pitching: Pino is a bulldog, and he is someone who is going to eat up innings no matter what role he pitches in. He has shown the ability to go late into games, and already has multiple complete games in his career. He is also a very confident pitcher, showing confidence in all of his pitches, and throwing any one of them as a payoff pitch. If he continues to show this kind of reliance in his stuff, he is going to be tough to deal with in any situation.

Projection: Pino has been worked in every kind of role on a pitching staff, and has had success no matter where his team fits him in. He has been used as a starter, reliever, middle relief, set-up man, and a closer, and his numbers speak for themselves.

ETA. 2010 Pino was once considered one of the top arms in the Twins organization, but he will need a successful 2009 season to get back to that status. When he is healthy, there is no doubt that Pino can be dominant, but he needs to prove that he is all the way back in 2009. With a good start to the season, Pino will likely be heading to Rochester, where he can regain his status as a top arm in the Twins organization.

impressive K/BB this year between AA and AAA, looks like he could be a decent pickup considering what we gave for him

Carmona sucks. That is all.

I really have doubts as to whether he can be counted on for much. He follows a decent start or two with a thundering turd like tonight. Maybe some offseason work will help, but anything more than an 8-10 win guy with an ERA around 5.50 and a 1-1 K/BB ratio has to be considered a bonus at this point.
