  • Austin Fields – offensive quality control
https://hokiesports.com/staff/austin-fields
Austin Fields is in his third season with the Hokies. He joined the staff as a graduate assistant in the summer of 2022. A graduate of Slippery Rock University, Fields, who works with the offensive line, was the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at West Virginia State in 2021.

Prior to his time at West Virginia State, Fields previously worked at Bluffton University, Heidelberg University and Slippery Rock.

As on offensive lineman at Slippery Rock, Fields played in 31 games in his three-year career. His senior season in 2017, Fields helped anchor a line that blocked for an offense which ranked fifth in the nation in passing, eighth in fourth down conversions, 11th in scoring, 11th in third down conversion, 21st in first downs and 24th in total offense. He began his collegiate career at West Virginia where he redshirted.

Brought over from VA Tech with Bowen. This is his version of Sollene(its a plus that he also has some OH ties). Definitely seems like a grinder in the coaching game, and he just hit his first big boy job

Well, I have time to kill today so let’s get it started. I’m sure people way smarter than me have a better list. I just went through and tried to specifically look at names that are coaching WRs now. I’m not sure if Day wants a WR/OC or they’ll do some shuffling (Bailey to WR and a new OC-only). My biggest concern is keeping that unit at an elite level (recruiting/development). Day and an OC can figure out the rest.

It’s hard to replace an NFL vet, Ohio native, young guy with South Florida connections and proven developmental skills as coach. But for current WR coaches I found:

NFL
Antwaan Randle El - followed Ben Johnson from Detroit OC to the Bears. Long NFL career and great college QB with midwest ties.

Leonard Hankerson - currently with the 49ers if Day still has a connection for that. There’s your SoFL guy coming from Miami but he’s pretty limited coaching experience.

Aaron Morehead - Eagles WR coach for the last 6 years. Short NFL career after playing at Illinois. Been coaching in college/NFL since 2009 at various stops.

College
Kenny Guiton - we know about him. Probably a little green

Deion Branch - back at Louisville where he played but one of the smartest WRs that played under Belichick if Matty P wants to make a call

There’s the obvious OC option too with Chip. But we might also get a good look at Mike
Shanahan (IU) this weekend (not related to other Shanny’s). He’s a WR coach too.
