Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Just hired a new "quality control" guy:

WELCOME ABOARD. Quite a few of Ohio State's quality control and graduate assistant positions need filling in the next few weeks after a few departures this offseason (get those applications ready), but the Buckeyes are already welcoming one new face.



This could be an extremely strategic hire, based on the schedule. Billy Fessler played for current Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead at Penn State and coached under him at Mississippi State.

So, just connecting some dots here.

After LSU swings and misses at their third DC target, Raymond is probably pissed LSU isn’t even considering him, right?

I said in Mattison’s thread, but Raymond looking around almost has to be one of the primary sources of the Elias Ricks transfer rumors, right?



If Ohio State can somehow figure a way to bring Raymond and Ricks on boards, I’m all for it.

I do think they need to do some soul searching about the overall scheme, however.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think it’s pretty vital for Day to let the defensive staff run a scheme they are comfortable and familiar with. I think it will lead to more creativity and better adjustments.

Right now it feels like he is imposing the single high safety which is hampering Coombs ability to do that.

Either that or Day needs to bring in someone who is familiar with his preferred defensive scheme to help with play calling and adjustments.

Austin Ward of Lettermen Row, on their Rapid Reaction video regarding the Mattison retirement, threw cold water on the Raymond rumors. Ward said Raymond will not be a candidate for the Mattison vacancy.

Two names he did throw out there were Randall Joyner (SMU defensive line coach) and Ryan Crow (Tennessee Titans assistant special teams coach). This would lead me to believe there could be some internal promotions instead of an outside co-defensive coordinator being hired. I guess we'll see for sure in the coming days.

During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Joyner was as a defensive graduate assistant with the Buckeyes, working primarily with the team’s defensive line. Ohio State went 23-4 during his two seasons with a trip to the CFP Semifinals in 2016 and a Big Ten Championship and win in the Cotton Bowl in 2017.

In 2017, Crow was a graduate assistant at Ohio State, where he primarily worked with linebackers.

It'd be disappointing if they weren't able to make a bigger hire. I'm sure they have a plan, but this is a critical hire prior to possibly making a 2-4 year run, and normally you don't make those runs with new guys just 3 years out from being GAs.

both those coaching spots seem odd... I know LJ Sr isn’t gonna coach forever but I assumed Washington was destined for the DL...

Correct. He was basically overseeing the front 7.

Ryan Day and Jeff Hafley were largely "who?" hires when they came on. Nobody knew if Hartline could coach or recruit. All 3 were homeruns...hell, grand slams. I know it's cliché, but I think the program has earned some benefit of the doubt and we should "trust the coaches" if they go that way.

I know Bammer just seems to pick and chose who they want, but as hard as it is to admit, we aren't Bammer and Ryan Day doesn't have the cache of Nick Saban.

If you want to play for championships, you need to coach like champions.

Forgive me for not being excited over a NFL special teams coach, and a college coach who just took over a position group in 2019, or internal promotions.

Ash and Haffley took over the D, and that’s the type of addition/ impact I’m hoping for. It’s a business.

Ohio State can pull just about anyone they want, if they want.
