Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

So, just connecting some dots here.

After LSU swings and misses at their third DC target, Raymond is probably pissed LSU isn’t even considering him, right?

https://deathvalleyvoice.com/2021/0...rs-2-obvious-dc-options-missing-ryan-nielsen/

I said in Mattison’s thread, but Raymond looking around almost has to be one of the primary sources of the Elias Ricks transfer rumors, right?

If Ohio State can somehow figure a way to bring Raymond and Ricks on boards, I’m all for it.

I do think they need to do some soul searching about the overall scheme, however.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think it’s pretty vital for Day to let the defensive staff run a scheme they are comfortable and familiar with. I think it will lead to more creativity and better adjustments.

Right now it feels like he is imposing the single high safety which is hampering Coombs ability to do that.

Either that or Day needs to bring in someone who is familiar with his preferred defensive scheme to help with play calling and adjustments.

Austin Ward of Lettermen Row, on their Rapid Reaction video regarding the Mattison retirement, threw cold water on the Raymond rumors. Ward said Raymond will not be a candidate for the Mattison vacancy.

Two names he did throw out there were Randall Joyner (SMU defensive line coach) and Ryan Crow (Tennessee Titans assistant special teams coach). This would lead me to believe there could be some internal promotions instead of an outside co-defensive coordinator being hired. I guess we'll see for sure in the coming days.

Info comes around the 4:30 mark.

For anyone else wondering about the connection for those names:

https://smumustangs.com/staff-directory/randall-joyner/2486

During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Joyner was as a defensive graduate assistant with the Buckeyes, working primarily with the team’s defensive line. Ohio State went 23-4 during his two seasons with a trip to the CFP Semifinals in 2016 and a Big Ten Championship and win in the Cotton Bowl in 2017.

In 2017, Crow was a graduate assistant at Ohio State, where he primarily worked with linebackers.

It'd be disappointing if they weren't able to make a bigger hire. I'm sure they have a plan, but this is a critical hire prior to possibly making a 2-4 year run, and normally you don't make those runs with new guys just 3 years out from being GAs.

both those coaching spots seem odd... I know LJ Sr isn’t gonna coach forever but I assumed Washington was destined for the DL...

again wtf is Barnes doing ..... ?
LJ Sr - DL
Washington LBs
Coombs - DBs (secondary)
Barnes - allegedly Safeties and Special teams...

do we know where Matthison was coaching .. i thought Front 7... DL & LBs right?

Correct. He was basically overseeing the front 7.

“I think we have a really good group of guys there right now who are versatile, so we’re going to look at all options,” Day said. “Is there somebody else out there that can take Greg’s spot in the same exact role that he did, or are we going to just move some things around and reassign some of the job descriptions? That’s all up on the table, and we’re working on that now, and looking at all different options.

“I’m not really set on ‘This is exactly what the role needs to be.’ Want to just put the best group together to give our guys on defense the best chance to be successful.”
.
.
.
“Anybody who has a background in four-down, single-high defense certainly would fit quicker,” Day said. “But then also bringing in somebody that has a little bit more of a diverse background can give us different perspective, and areas where we can maximize who we have. And I think that’s what’s important, because we try to do that all the time on offense, and I think that that’s going to be important to what we do on defense, is based on who we have that year, what gives us the best chance to be successful?

“If it’s to continue to be in a single-high, Cover 3? Let’s do it. But if it’s not, what are the things? So do we want to have some continuity there and keep that going, or do we want to bring in somebody with a different perspective? All the discussions that are being had now.”

Good lord what a coup that would be!

Ryan Day and Jeff Hafley were largely "who?" hires when they came on. Nobody knew if Hartline could coach or recruit. All 3 were homeruns...hell, grand slams. I know it's cliché, but I think the program has earned some benefit of the doubt and we should "trust the coaches" if they go that way.

I know Bammer just seems to pick and chose who they want, but as hard as it is to admit, we aren't Bammer and Ryan Day doesn't have the cache of Nick Saban.

If you want to play for championships, you need to coach like champions.

Forgive me for not being excited over a NFL special teams coach, and a college coach who just took over a position group in 2019, or internal promotions.

Ash and Haffley took over the D, and that’s the type of addition/ impact I’m hoping for. It’s a business.

Ohio State can pull just about anyone they want, if they want.

I agree, the big name guy isn't always the best hire. (He wasn't a coordinator, but) I remember Urban was a little reluctant to bring Luke Fickell's buddy who was largely a WHO? (i.e. Mike Vrabel w/basically no coaching experience) on board too. Getting the perfect fit, i.e. outstanding knowledge of the various defenses, relates well to the athletics, great recruiter, team player/works and plays well with other coaches, never contributed to a school's NCAA violations, agrees to a multiple year commitment for stability, etc. is more important than a "big name" guy.
