Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Austin Ward says “sources” indicate Parker Fleming could be promoted after giving Matt Barnes more responsibility. Lettermen Row has been stating that it will probably be a staff shuffling since the beginning and they’re probably the most connected. We’ll see if this comes to fruition.

In looking at his bio, seems like Fleming's experience has mostly been on the offensive side of the ball. It would seem a bit odd to add him to the defensive coaching staff.

Fleming served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas State University in 2017. He was promoted to that position after one season following his work as wide receivers and special teams coach.

Fleming arrived at Texas State from James Madison, where he was the wide receivers coach. During his time with the Dukes, Fleming mentored All-CAA wide receiver Daniel Brown, who is currently a member of the Chicago Bears.

Fleming spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons working with Ohio State’s offense and special teams. Prior to that, he was at Capital University during the 2011 season and Decatur (Ga.) High School in 2010, coaching the quarterbacks at both stops.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Fleming is a 2010 graduate of Presbyterian College with a degree in political science. He played quarterback at Presbyterian from 2007-09.

I wonder if Fleming will get promoted to special teams coach, since that’s where he is a QC assistant, to allow Barnes to focus solely on defense and get more involved there.

My only questions are:

Given his title, did Matt Barnes not have any input with the DBs? How will giving him more responsibility help fix things?
I’ve kinda been screaming this since the offseason... Matt Barnes ... “What do you do here”

Sounding more and more, according to the guys from Lettermen Row, that they're going to elevate Parker Fleming and re-assign roles from there. Will likely be Fleming as ST coach and Matt Barnes as secondary coach to free up Coombs to focus more on coordinating the defense. Should be made official on Monday, per the LR guys.

I mean it might work but that's boring as hell from an outside standpoint. Also concerning it takes Coombs from the thing we know he does really well. If he's not coaching dbs and the doesn't get dirastically better well....

Yeah... I know trust the coaches but if the ability is there to get someone who's got the experience that'd be less of a gamble then prompting someone that doesn't have much experience.

This is a higher risk option than taking someone with a good track record.

As stated above, taking Coombs away from DBs full time does not seem like the best recipe for success. There seems to be a bunch of excuse making as to why the play was so bad.

Replacing Greg Mattison with Parker Fleming does not make the coaching staff better and adding a ST coach does not improve the defense. He also does not qualify as a “new set of eyes.”

GIVE KERRY COOMBS THE KEYS AND GET OUT OF THE WAY
After the events in Miami two weeks ago, few Buckeye fans will likely welcome this option. However, it's not as if this is Coombs' first time leading a defense.

Despite spending the 13 seasons prior to last as a position coach, Coombs spent 18 years in charge of some of the best high school defenses in the state of Ohio. To do so, he didn't just sit in Cover 3, either.

The 59-year old coach has coached just about every system since joining Brian Kelly's Cincinnati staff in 2007, mentoring secondaries that ran single-high, two-high, and split-field coverages that employed man, zone, and match techniques. With the Tennessee Titans, Coombs learned directly from one of the league's best coordinators in Dean Pees, who is about as far from the Pete Carroll coaching tree as one might find, mixing and disguising looks with great success.

In the CFP semifinal, Coombs showed glimpses of what he'd learned with the Titans, showing a 6-man blitz and sending the middle linebacker while maintaining the Cover 3 zone behind it, resulting in a near INT.

As we know now, Coombs and co. had little time to prepare anything similar for Alabama, getting only one padded practice between the two games due to COVID protocols. If given a full slate of spring and fall practices, who knows what might be to come.

"As the season went on, we weren’t just solely in [single-high]," Day told the media last week. "We went to some two-high stuff, we went to a little bit more zone pressure, so it’s going to evolve."

Pros: A clear decision-making process with just one coordinator and play-caller; potential to promote a younger coach to a co-coordinator down the road if such an offer comes from the outside.

Cons: It's all on one guy. Is he up to the task?

Just sayin': You don't know what side or handshake agreements were make with Kerry Coombs when he was hired. It really doesn't appear that they are seriously considering any outside hires for the DC position. It is possible that giving the DC keys to Kerry when Greg Mattison retired may have been a "done deal".
