Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Let's not forget that Cameron Brown was lost in the second game of the season. That was a huge loss to a secondary that couldn't afford the loss.
For sure but he was our solid #3 guy... we still had our top 2 corners and our best Safety.

I'll say this though... I fully believe we will be very much improved next year. Like a top 30 type of pass defense. We should have a better rushing DL IMO, more athletic LBs, and simply more options at DB with 3 returning starters there as well as a ton of guys who played.

I hate to bag on the kid but I think we will upgrade in place of Wade. Not sure what the deal was but he just got beat so many times on 50/50 plays. To me Wade just wasn't quite as physical as he was in past years. Maybe that was his injury though?

Anyways Banks/Proctor/Brown/Ransom gives us a very good starting 4 if we with two safeties. Going with 3 corners though may be difficult as we still won't have the proven depth. Once again the depth is actually in our LB room and provided we get JTT up front.

Which is why I'd love someone who does have a ton of experience running two safety looks.

I think Wade is a a pure nickel and was forced to play out of position.
If this is true, and I expect it is, it's the very definition of non-elite coaching/coordination. Why not play the All-American at his natural position and work in your younger guys on the outside? Would they've been beaten 50% of the time? Instead, we had a veteran who's now gone play on the outside and get beat half the time and we now have to work in young guys who didn't play outside.

Not to mention we didn't have elite play at the nickel spot either. I agree that in hindsight at least Wade playing his natural position would've been 1 less position to worry about.

Yes and I think an elite coordinator would've been able to see it and tell all of us, fuck you, we're playing our AA at slot and he's going to ball and we'll figure the rest out.

While Ohio State's defensive struggles this past season gave Day reason to consider shaking things up and bringing in a new co-defensive coordinator, Day ultimately decided in favor of stability, putting his faith in returning assistant coaches Coombs, Barnes, Larry Johnson and Al Washington to get things fixed on the defensive side of the ball without bringing in any new full-time defensive coaches.

Coombs enters the 2021 season with a lot to prove as a second-year defensive coordinator, but after a 2020 season in which the Buckeyes had to deal with the constant challenges of COVID-19, Day is standing by Coombs and his other returning defensive assistants and trusting their ability to get the defense back on track.

To me, this move is the difference between making a NC game and winning one. Alabama is out here filling assistant coach vacancies with former NFL head coaches. Day is internally promoting a QC coach for the second year in a row. Meh, indeed.
Or possibly Day is confident Coombs is the guy to get the defense turned around and he feels this move will give the coaches room the chemistry it needs. Or maybe he has another reason for this move. There are a lot of things I don't know, but I am confident Day wants to win the NC, not just get there.

Agreed! Alabama really has an advantage with former head coaches taking little or no pay to just be an analyst.

Hopefully this works out because this could backfire obviously if it doesnt.
