Sometimes you have to take that chance, Vrabel wasn't a DC before the Texans gave him that job. Vrabel was given a chance by Tressel to be his DC without coordinating experience. My god, Coombs is getting killed for a year in which he had NO OFF SEASON with a defense that he inherited. He had no camp, no practices before the season, what did you expect??? And guess what, WE STILL MADE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND WON THE BIG 10! I'm yelling because I feel like some of you think that we won 5 games and weren't in the national conversation as one of the best teams in CFB. He wasn't left with a stud DE like Hafley. Give the man a chance, damn! Give Coombs a damn off season with his troops. Talk shit next off season if Penix has 400+yds for IU again, if the Oregon QB has 400+yds, if the Maryland and/or Ped St QB has 300-400+yds.
Everyone was so hyped when Coombs returned, only to tear the man down, and he still made the NC, where yes, we got our ass beat, but by an Alabama team that is one of Saban's best ever! Fans are fickle as hell and have the shortest of memories when shit doesn't end the way they thought it would. The same man who led a damn good gameplan, that yes allowed the future #1 pick Trevor Lawrence to throw for 400yds, but his sidekick at RB, Etienne was a non factor in running and catching, does that not a kudos? Clifford had a great statistical game because Dotson had 3 of the best catches of the freaking year, thats just plain lucky! That doesn't mean that Clifford and Dotson are good, but they had amazing luck on their side on several plays, AND STILL LOST!
I get it that it's the off season, but damn, we finished as the 2nd best team in the country, after our Commisioner tried to kill off our season, we had virtually all forces working against our team, hell we could've not even made the B1G championship if not for the conference change in games played, and then we probably wouldn't have made the CFP. And then we probably would've been possibly in NY6 bowl and not an afterthought for the NC. Day is gambling with young coaches and mixing it with older coaches he knows. We have to respect that. Day IS NOT Saban, he can't call up former HCs to be water boys and clipboard holders, it is what it is. Day may get there one day, but right now he has to take gambles with a guy who is unproven as a coordinator, but is proven as a position coach. The one thing that Coombs knows his DBs, the man didn't forget how to coach. Let the man go back to the lab and put heads together with the rest of the defensive staff
