Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

First, I want to make it clear that I trust no one, especially the squirrels in my backyard.

As stated above, taking Coombs away from DBs full time does not seem like the best recipe for success. There seems to be a bunch of excuse making as to why the play was so bad.

Replacing Greg Mattison with Parker Fleming does not make the coaching staff better and adding a ST coach does not improve the defense. He also does not qualify as a “new set of eyes.”

Second, I'm not so sure he'll be taken away from the DBs, just that Barnes is getting more work with them overall as to free up some time for Coombs. Fleming seems to have little to do with the defense right now, just more of a full time ST coach.

I don't disagree overall, though. I was hoping for someone who could come in with more experience in what Day wants to do on defense and then shore up any issues they've had. They must really think that this was just a lost year due to personnel and lack of practice time. Otherwise it's a headscratcher, or like @ScriptOhio said, this was part of the deal that he'd get his own turn after Mattison retired.

We're probably jumping the gun in regards to the defensive strategy right now anyway, though. Not much was going to save the secondary last season. Right now the focus is going to be on recruiting and building depth with the same system in place to allow for more disguising. Hopefully by late 2021 but more likely 2022 players and coaches will start seeing returns.

Has Coombs Coordinated a Big 5 defense, or an NFL Defense..?

I’ve seen a couple of really good coordinators leave these past few years, and sorry, I’m not all in on the likelihood of Coombs coordinating a College Championship level defense.

Part of the challenge is hiring the right people for the right roles...this doesn’t have THAT vibe whatsoever.

As a lifetime fan...God I hope I’m wrong.

With the staff shuffling, I’m not thinking they keep the single high as the primary defense. I’m thinking they go back to two high with the ability to roll down to C3.

Sometimes you have to take that chance, Vrabel wasn't a DC before the Texans gave him that job. Vrabel was given a chance by Tressel to be his DC without coordinating experience. My god, Coombs is getting killed for a year in which he had NO OFF SEASON with a defense that he inherited. He had no camp, no practices before the season, what did you expect??? And guess what, WE STILL MADE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND WON THE BIG 10! I'm yelling because I feel like some of you think that we won 5 games and weren't in the national conversation as one of the best teams in CFB. He wasn't left with a stud DE like Hafley. Give the man a chance, damn! Give Coombs a damn off season with his troops. Talk shit next off season if Penix has 400+yds for IU again, if the Oregon QB has 400+yds, if the Maryland and/or Ped St QB has 300-400+yds.
Everyone was so hyped when Coombs returned, only to tear the man down, and he still made the NC, where yes, we got our ass beat, but by an Alabama team that is one of Saban's best ever! Fans are fickle as hell and have the shortest of memories when shit doesn't end the way they thought it would. The same man who led a damn good gameplan, that yes allowed the future #1 pick Trevor Lawrence to throw for 400yds, but his sidekick at RB, Etienne was a non factor in running and catching, does that not a kudos? Clifford had a great statistical game because Dotson had 3 of the best catches of the freaking year, thats just plain lucky! That doesn't mean that Clifford and Dotson are good, but they had amazing luck on their side on several plays, AND STILL LOST!
I get it that it's the off season, but damn, we finished as the 2nd best team in the country, after our Commisioner tried to kill off our season, we had virtually all forces working against our team, hell we could've not even made the B1G championship if not for the conference change in games played, and then we probably wouldn't have made the CFP. And then we probably would've been possibly in NY6 bowl and not an afterthought for the NC. Day is gambling with young coaches and mixing it with older coaches he knows. We have to respect that. Day IS NOT Saban, he can't call up former HCs to be water boys and clipboard holders, it is what it is. Day may get there one day, but right now he has to take gambles with a guy who is unproven as a coordinator, but is proven as a position coach. The one thing that Coombs knows his DBs, the man didn't forget how to coach. Let the man go back to the lab and put heads together with the rest of the defensive staff

That narrative is tired. OSU finished behind teams that had entirely new coaching staffs. Including B1G teams that were subjected to the same preseason practice schedules Rutgers and Michigan State

Also, some people questioned his hire as a DC because of fit. Of course we love him as a DB coach, but it sounds like that won’t even be his primary duty next year.

Once more, it’s not that we think he’s a bad coach. We know he isn’t. We’ve seen his work. Him being the DC last year being forced to coach a scheme that he’s never coached full time, let alone call plays for, was an issue. It sounds like they’ll let him call what he wants, so things may improve, but it isn’t a guarantee.

But narrative is valid. And OSU still beat the brakes off of MSU, and won the B1G so obviously he can't be but so bad. Rutgers and MSU don't get a teams best shot every week, OSU does. Beating Rutgers or a first HC at MSU doesn't mean much, but teams can make their entire year off of beating OSU.

And very very few questioned his hire, the questions are more coming out now, but I saw next to none when he was hired.

You're acting like the man has been a DC for 10yrs with these same results yearly. Next year will be a big question mark, and the first 2wks are massive tests for him.

Also let's see if the DL can be better on the edges and create more pressure. That will help with the DBs immensely, and I'm sure that we all can agree. If Cooper and Co. had a few more sacks in big games I'm sure the DBs jobs would've been much easier.

Austin Ward says “sources” indicate Parker Fleming could be promoted after giving Matt Barnes more responsibility. Lettermen Row has been stating that it will probably be a staff shuffling since the beginning and they’re probably the most connected. We’ll see if this comes to fruition.

What upset me about their update was them saying we are not Alabama. That we won't go out and spend 1.5 mil on a coach. That they're run like a business and we have to sell being a family.

That's some bull shit. We have the money to do it and "we aren't Bama" is just dumb. We are one of the top 3 teams in college ball so go out and spend the money to get the best coach.

Letterman rows angel was that we cant lose coaches every 2 years and by going with someone internally we maybe can keep them for multiple years. That's great and all... but if our defense sucks next year there will be major shake ups anyways.

If we are passing on better qualified people so that we don't have to rehire in 2 years that's not the best excuse.

I haven't gone back and counted them but I would bet dollars to donuts we actually had more practices this season before the first game than we would have had with spring and fall camps. Spring is only 15 practices. With our delay of the season, we had more than that. We were practicing most of the days even when the season had been canceled. I am not buying the lack of time to prepare. We didn't improve at all during the season either.

Here are some quotes and number of practices etc that are going to call BS on the lack of time to prepare narrative.

As Day noted Nov. 19, "We've had 57 practices and we've only played three games. Very strange."

I like Coombs a lot. Great recruiter, good DB coach. Great spirit.

But what we had to give him to get him back to OSU, I am starting to wonder if Day has put himself in a slight pickle. He wants to keep Kerry but schematically and in terms of complementary hires, things feel like they are getting a bit discombobulated. And maybe that's why the solution is just to promote from within and give Kerry more overall control and hope that plus a more normative seasons results in a more balanced defense.

But yeah, from the outside looking in, I don't think Day is necessarily feeling warm fuzzies about the situation he has made for himself on that side of the ball.

Gotcha. If true, then no, the not enough practice excuse can't be used. But I still think Coombs deserves more time with the defense and I think '21 is a better defensive year

Were we so less talented that we couldn't place in the top 80 for pass defense though?

Everyone had short pre seasons and everyone dealt with missing players.

Yet a lot of teams were able to do more with less talent.

The criticism is fair and if we have another year of a top 5 worse pass defense geez I'm not sure what we do.
