During his first season as the secondary coach with the Browns in 2014, Cleveland led the NFL in opponent passer rating (74.1), opponent completion percentage (57.1) and passes defensed (99) while finishing second in the league with 21 interceptions, the team’s highest total since 2008. CB Joe Haden, Whitner and S Tashaun Gipson were each selected to the Pro Bowl, marking the first time in franchise history that three defensive backs were selected to the Pro Bowl in the same year. Despite missing the final five games of the season, Gipson finished second in the NFL with six interceptions. Cleveland allowed 69 fewer points than they did in 2013 and ranked ninth in scoring defense (21.1 PPG). His secondary was part of a defensive unit that led the NFL in opponent quarterback rating (74.1), ranked second in interceptions (21), and tied for fourth in takeaways (29) in 2014.
Prior to joining the Browns, Hafley spent two years (2012-13) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2013, as the team’s secondary/safeties coach, Hafley oversaw a unit that finished tied for third in the league in interceptions (21) and takeaways (31). CB Darrell Revis earned Pro Bowl honors as he registered 50 tackles and 11 passes defended.
In 2012, his first year in the NFL, Hafley served as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Buccaneers. He helped rookie S Mark Barron finish second among rookie defensive backs in tackles (88) and passes defensed (10) while CB Ronde Barber registered a team-high four interceptions in his transition from cornerback to safety.
