Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

Is 69 year old Mattison going to have the fire necessary to be on Ohio State's side for the rivalry considering all the kids he coached and recruited on the other side?

Re: Though Urban Meyer is no longer Ohio State's head coach, Mattison does have a connection with Meyer, serving as his Florida's co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach from 2005 to 2007, helping coach a national championship team.

During his first season as the secondary coach with the Browns in 2014, Cleveland led the NFL in opponent passer rating (74.1), opponent completion percentage (57.1) and passes defensed (99) while finishing second in the league with 21 interceptions, the team’s highest total since 2008. CB Joe Haden, Whitner and S Tashaun Gipson were each selected to the Pro Bowl, marking the first time in franchise history that three defensive backs were selected to the Pro Bowl in the same year. Despite missing the final five games of the season, Gipson finished second in the NFL with six interceptions. Cleveland allowed 69 fewer points than they did in 2013 and ranked ninth in scoring defense (21.1 PPG). His secondary was part of a defensive unit that led the NFL in opponent quarterback rating (74.1), ranked second in interceptions (21), and tied for fourth in takeaways (29) in 2014.

Prior to joining the Browns, Hafley spent two years (2012-13) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2013, as the team’s secondary/safeties coach, Hafley oversaw a unit that finished tied for third in the league in interceptions (21) and takeaways (31). CB Darrell Revis earned Pro Bowl honors as he registered 50 tackles and 11 passes defended.

In 2012, his first year in the NFL, Hafley served as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Buccaneers. He helped rookie S Mark Barron finish second among rookie defensive backs in tackles (88) and passes defensed (10) while CB Ronde Barber registered a team-high four interceptions in his transition from cornerback to safety.

Funny, because he's Schiano's guy.

Makes you wonder that the relationship between Day and Schiano was the last couple years. Anyway, it's 100% Day's team now and he has a right to chose the assistant coaches that he has confindence in and is comfortable working with.

On Schiano: He's not 100% committed to Ohio State; it's common knowledge that he is actively looking for a head coach position.

Mattison had good defenses so I'm OK with it... would have preferred a younger guy but Mattison has good results.

This has Urban written all over it based on his past relationship with Mattison. I like the hire because he is older. He's also known as a excellent recruiter. Has tons of connections due to his longevity. And he knows TSUN inside out.
