Julian got a TD and a few first downs running the ball. Happy about this.

Tough crowd. Coaches would kill to go 8/12 on 3rd down. If McCuin catches a ball that hit him in the hands, it’s 7/11 because that next 3rd down doesn’t happen.

Yeah being 2/3 for third down would lead the country by a mile.
Offense did great all day.
What I liked was they varied their approach. They went run heavy for an 8 minute drive and then sped up for a couple 90 second drives too. Then Julian with his legs was a whole new level of good to see.
I won’t even go over the defense. It’s good to get a win!
Also the first question to Ryan was about why the defense sucked and he pointed out that he knew the first question would be negative even though the offense was the highlight of the day

Random thoughts;
I never thought the defense would lose three top 10 guys in the draft and stay at the same level so not disappointed but it’s clear they have a long way to go. They scare me.
Much like Sayin, they are going to get attacked and they will either get better, or implode.
Bert and his staff are good coaches so they just added to the growth through the stress (hopefully)

Last year spoiled me
IMO the DL and the LBs just don't have the foot speed of the elite we lost
so they have to function much more in sync to make up for it

Yeah as it should be. I’m pretty worried about the Iowa running back next week in Kinnick.
The defense for Iowa is going to do better than Illinois so we can’t afford to give up 20 or so.

While last year’s D had outright freaks, even for OSU, it’s hard to know if this year’s edition is really lacking footspeed or are just playing slow because they’re inexperienced. I tend to assume that we have the athletes, if perhaps not freaks, but they’ve got to start playing decisively and downhill.

Ah I don’t know. They got some damn missiles out there but I think we are nearing the point where they just have to let the young kids play.
Let Alford, Wilder, Pettijohn, and even Perez play more than not.
I have to admit I’m pretty disappointed in all of the older transfer players on defense. Alliegro, Smith, Russaw, Terry Moore hasn’t played, and Little Jr. has been up and down too.
The middle of the defense particularly is pretty rough.
It doesn’t help that Sanchez has a long ways to go also. He’s not a lock down guy and he won’t be this year while he learns on the job.
Losing two straight years of high level NFL talent finally caught up especially up front.

Went to the game with my family. Kiddos made it through the whole game which is a win! Beautiful day and nice W. Quick observations:
- JJ Smith is the GOAT! Told my kids they’re watching an all time great and don’t know if we’ll see another as good as him in S&G
- Sayin moving chains / scoring a TD on the ground was fantastic
- Sayin did a better job today with his progressions and was mostly pinpoint accurate
- Credit to Illinois, they have dudes and played a tough game
- Houser and Valentine played great; Valentine was best RB on field today
- defense was frustrating to watch, we were spoiled and were a work in progress
- lots of missed assignments, missed tackles, not getting pressure and we got beat a few times but got lucky
- we clearly haven’t solved special teams
- Enjoy the W…regular season is 1/3 over

Fair point. We lost a lot of talent on defense and its unrealistic to expect a similar defensive result. But then again, if we want a championship run (or a chance at one with our schedule), they've got to improve a lot on the front end and fast, or there will be at least 3 losses this season. Hopefully Patricia can get it fixed, but my concern is we just don't have the horses to do it on the DL and there's no championship team with an average or worse DL.
