We were outcoached and outplayed in most phases of the game, especially on defense. I think the coaching graded out worst. A timeout should have been called on that fumble into the endzone. Adjustments were not made effectively as the game progressed. But as others said, the coaches did not force Todd to throw into double coverage or our defense to miss first tackles.
Neither our coaches or players are invincible. This loss ended the greatest run of straight victories ever in the Big Ten. We will learn from this and move on.
Most of us believed that the best this team would achieve would be to play in a BCS game. That is still possible. We can still have a season that most teams would die to have, and almost our entire team will be eligible to come back and play next year.
We have a lot to be thankful for, even in this time of bitter disappointment. Let's just try to remember that.

I still can't believe Boeckman missed a wide open Ballard down the seam. One of the bigger plays of the game.
Here's to 11/17!!!!!!!!!! Should be a hell of a game.
BukOff;990174; said:Listen, hindsight is 20/20. Was it a mistake to call a timeout? Yes. But I don't think Tressel should be crucified for the way the game was played. I promise you Tressel didn't coach Checkwa, Grant, etc. to miss as many tackles as we did. And I promise you that Tressel didn't coach the line to be dominated on the LOS. And I promise you, Tressel had nothing to do with the referees failing to call a penalty all night on Illinois (maybe Vegas did, but not Tressel). So let's take Tressel off of the cross and place the blame on the poor performance on nearly every cog in this machine for breaking down.

Having Freeman, Jenkins, Chekwa, Gholston, Worthington, Wilson, and, oh... Laurinaitis all coming back could easily jettison us into the top five next year.

OregonBuckeye;990208; said:Oh. You're kind of taking what I said out of context. My point was that this year's team has so many new faces it's not really fair to use last year's results as an indicator of this year's team.
Once again, welcome to the 07-08 season. I suggest you realize that a lot changes from season to season.
Everybody has made good points so far. Here's my two cents:
1). DT is not a position that you want to mess with. Having a solid defense starts in the interior defensive line. As witnessed by this season, even though we had some very young players in our back seven, having two excellent tackles compensated all of that and more. Without rocks in the interior DL, it's very difficult to be a great or even good defense.
2). We lose our top three DTs after this season, the guys we recruit for this class weren't really going to make a difference next season either way, but their recruitment is crucial for the year after and beyond. If we end up with one DT recruit over the past two years, it's going to hurt, maybe not next year, but somewhere down the road.
3). We will have to count on unproven commodities next season regardless of who we recruit this year. It'll be up to Denlinger, Worthington, Larimore and maybe a couple of others to hold the fort there. And in my opinion, we will struggle somewhat there, because let's not forget, even the great Quinn Pitcock wasn't what he is now his sophomore year.
4). Heacock is a great coach, no doubt. But he's got to have bodies to work with. The defensive line is as much about talent as it is about depth. Expecting any coach to coach up everybody is a little too much IMO.
I know I come across as being negative, but I still have faith that our coaches will somehow put together good defenses. It's just that it would have been a lot easier with a few more bodies.
NJ-Buckeye;990234; said:Nope.. The NCAA committee decided to allow each team one challenge during the course of the game. The head coach may request a review by signaling for a timeout. If the challenge overturns the call on the field, the coach retains the right to challenge later in the game and is not charged a timeout. If the call on the field is not reversed in the challenge, the team is charged a timeout and the coach does not have the ability to challenge again in the game.
