Game Thread Illinois 28, Ohio State 21 (final)

My memory is fuzzy. What's this in reference to?

This?

If we have to worry about QBs piling on rushing yards, then we'd really be in trouble. PJ Hill is a big worry. Mike Hart. Whoever Penn State's got. We are going to run into a couple of physical teams in the big ten in the latter part of the season. I get the sense that our defense will be fine against teams that have to go to the pass. It's when we go up against a Barry Alveraz-like team that will put the game on the line based on their ability to run it up our throat that we will really know what we are made out of. Quite frankly, since the NIU game of last year, we haven't show that we can shut down a team that is determined to run it up our throat.

Garrett Wolfe ran up 171 yards against us.
Selvin Young had 94 yards on 11 carries, and Texas was slashing the running lanes at will at times before Smith put the game away.
Tony Hunt's 134 yard effort kept PSU in the game until late INTs put it away.
Iowa with Young and particularly Sims did a good job slashing open the running lanes before Smith put the game away.

Our defense then went on a tear against the likes of Illinois, Northwestern, Bowling Green, Minnesota, Michigan State and Indiana, but then the last two games...

142 yards to Mike Hart (and that's with Michigan playing big time catch-up most of the game) and then Florida.

Basically our run defense dominated against the really crappy teams, and were bailed out by Troy Smith against the mediocre to good teams when the scoreboard dictated that the other teams had to score quickly to keep up. This year, forget about it. If you are Iowa, if you are PSU, if you are Wisconsin, if you are Michigan, if you are Purdue, you look at Ohio State and you don't see the name Troy Smith on the roster, you are just going to keep on running the ball until Ohio State proves that it can close the lanes. That's what we gotta be worried about.

Your reply was....this:

^Hi, welcome to the 2007-08 season.

Not challenging that call
Not letting the refs know he was upset with no-call holding
Way too many WTF offensive play calls
Not putting eight guys in the box thus letting the game come to them
and calling the time out to let Zook have enuf time to correct his screw up
are all on JT

You're looking at 1-loss teams like Mizzou and Arizona State (if they win) that could also be ahead of us in the voting polls this week.

I think we will be above arizona st...dropping behind mizzou is a possiblity....it just depends if the voters really want to punish us or if they are more understanding of a team that finally lost just 1 game. I somehow feel like they won't drop us behind all the 1loss teams.

Further than that...a lot of people looking at the Big Ten as a weak conference have been salivating at the chance to drop us. I'd say we hit 8 or 9.

That's what I was thinking but the polls don't matter anymore. We're not playing for an NC. Win next week and we go to the Rose Bowl no matter what we happen to be ranked.

As far as the polls... we drop out of the top 117.
Probably #6, behind LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas, and West Virginia, although maybe even Mizzou sneaks past Ohio State.

The Bucks have almost no chance to get back into the top two, especially because Oregon and West Virginia don't have conference championship games to worry about.

We could see an Oregon-WVU BCS title game.... :sick1:

No one likes us we fall big in the polls.

irrelivant. we could be unranked tomorrow and it won't mean piss. we win next week we get a bcs game. we don't... *shrug* we get whatever table scraps we get. don't like it? win more.

its ok to loose early, its never ok to loose late. even if we could switch the dates of this loss to the begining of the year, our ssc is still too weak to really justify us #2 or better. you don't win out you don't really deserve it.

Honestly, I think that the media (and many tOSU fans) have been waiting for the other shoe to drop for three weeks. The rankings don't mean shit for us at this point, we win next week, we're in the #2 BCS game.

I went for a quick two mile walk and cooled down. This loss is very disappointing for a number of reasons. We were outcoached and outplayed in most phases of the game, especially on defense. I think the coaching graded out worst. A timeout should have been called on that fumble into the endzone. Adjustments were not made effectively as the game progressed. But as others said, the coaches did not force Todd to throw into double coverage or our defense to miss first tackles.

Neither our coaches or players are invincible. This loss ended the greatest run of straight victories ever in the Big Ten. We will learn from this and move on.

Most of us believed that the best this team would achieve would be to play in a BCS game. That is still possible. We can still have a season that most teams would die to have, and almost our entire team will be eligible to come back and play next year.

We have a lot to be thankful for, even in this time of bitter disappointment. Let's just try to remember that.

Still have a chance to play for the Rose Bowl, a Big-10 Championship, and a win over scUM yet somehow that doesn't make me feel better.

I hear ya...doesn't make me feel much better either. All the overrated talk turns out to be true (especially our defense) and honestly we just didn't deserve to win this game. We don't deserve to play in the national title game because we aren't in the top 2 in the country. We were outplayed, outcoached, and just didn't want it. You let them get 3rd and 10 with the same play 3 times and you obviously just don't want it bad enough. On the bright side, we are doing better than I though we would. I saw us losing 3-4 games, which it's still very possible to lose 3. I agree that this year could end like scUM's last year...win the next game and possibly win the Rose Bowl or lose to scUM then "crash and burn". So we'll see. I still think next year is our year but hopefully we can still salvage this one. Very disappointing because loving a team like we love our Buckeyes makes us vulnerable to over-reacting, so don't think I'm trying to trash them. I'm just venting so I can get over it and be ready to root our guys on next Saturday up north.
