Game Thread Illinois 28, Ohio State 21 (final)

If anything this makes our entire season come down to the last game in the exact same way it does for Michigan now...win, and we validate a great year that we exceeded expectations and fell just short of playing in the 3rd title game of the Tressel era...lose, and we finish on a crash and burn, play in a potentially crappy or mediocre bowl game and the season looks like a wasted opportunity. So it all still comes down to next week, which is fine by me, though today's loss certainly wasn't.

Wow....I can't believe this attitude.

I thought it would be this kind of season season, So what, they lost Gonzo and Ginn and Smith? Football is still won in the trenches and those guys were back.
Too many people don't understand this game and get caught up in the media hype. All the "experts" said this was a rebuilding year. That only showed their lack of understanding when they said this. They see OSU lose the Wr's and a Qb and think it's a rebuilding season. A rebuilding season is when you lose 4 or 5 offensive lineman and 3 or 4 defensive lineman.

I fully expected this team to be playing in the Sugar bowl. This is unacceptable...Or it should be.
But as long as we have, "Well, it was a great season", then you will continue to get these kind of "great" seasons. Or at least that is what you deserve
Yes, Boise State certainly had better linemen than Oklahoma, don't you think? Appy State's lines were much better than scUM's this season, yes? Certainly losing a Heisman winner, your top rusher, your two top pass receivers and a partridge in a pear tree is easy to overcome as long as your pretty good offensive line is intact.
Football is sometimes won in the trenches, and sometimes it's won when your big players make big plays. How many plays did Laurinits, Jenkins and Gholsten combine for? How about Robiskie and Hartline?

I need to preface this by saying hats off to Illinois, you definitely deserved that win.

Now, time to vent.

Why didn't we challenge that first TD? He fumbled and we recovered, which was clearly shown in the video-review, Illinois didn't snap the ball quickly and we still didn't challenge.

I'm not sure if it is the play-calling or the inexperience of Boeckman, but some of the plays he made were stupid. On our only 4th quarter possession, when he started to drop back to throw it deep, I was yelling at my TV why we were deviating from pounding it inside and quick slant routes. Then they intercepted the pass.

Last week we were losing to Wisconsin and they were firing on all cylinders, we were getting yards but they were punishing our guys. They were fired up. Just like this Illinois team was fired up. The difference between the Wisconsin game and this one? We never established the run. Give the ball to Beanie, Mo Wells or Saine and pound it inside. Beat up on their defense. Tire them out.

Our defense was weak today. It was pathetic. It's a 3rd and long and you know they're not going to pass it, and yet we run a delayed blitz every single time and Juice just continues to run up the middle for first downs. How does anyone on the coaching staff not see this?

As far as the 4th down timeout went, I sincerely hope it was because we had too many men on the field trying to switch personnel, because then we had to take it. Otherwise, we should have accepted the gift of the punt, no matter if we had the alignment right or not, because you knew with time to think about it Zook was going to go for it. If we had 11 guys on the field, Zook made Tressel look silly there.

This really hurts, But We need to beat michigan, and i think we will.....If we beat michigan, regardless where we are ranked, we will be playing the number 2 bowl game, and we will probably be playing the top team left out of the NC game, putting us in position to finish number 2...thats what i think, if we beat michigan and win the rose bowl we finish a controversial number 2 like when LSU beat Oklahoma and USC beat michigan, only we will be playing a better opponent than USC did that year.

Listen, hindsight is 20/20. Was it a mistake to call a timeout? Yes. But I don't think Tressel should be crucified for the way the game was played. I promise you Tressel didn't coach Checkwa, Grant, etc. to miss as many tackles as we did. And I promise you that Tressel didn't coach the line to be dominated on the LOS. And I promise you, Tressel had nothing to do with the referees failing to call a penalty all night on Illinois (maybe Vegas did, but not Tressel). So let's take Tressel off of the cross and place the blame on the poor performance on nearly every cog in this machine for breaking down.

Whoa, dude, that's a bit much. Two positions hurt us tremendously today on defense... Defensive Tackle and Safety (MJ). On the fourth and one, Doug Worthington got his ass kicked so bad that JL almost could not jump over him. Worthington has ONE job as nose on that play- submarine. ONE JOB. Since our DTs had another great game (a la Penn State), and Malcolm Jenkins couldn't get over the top or read a run/pass, we're staring at the Rose Bowl and we look like idiots because MJ wanted to fight AFTER THE GAME. Why so much energy????!!!!

I was very impressed with the play of Kurt Coleman and JL this week. Very solid games they didn't deserve to lose.

So, instead of sobbing and moping, who likes instant replay?

We will play in the Rose Bowl this year, but the season isn't over yet. We go to Ann Arbor with an attitude and put them out of their misery.
