If Tressel retired today, who would you want to replace him?

How about Gary Patterson from TCU if you want someone with HC experience...they play defense like Buckeyes and it would give us a nice Texas recruiting tie in.

If you don't need HC experience...I like LF or DH

Is he from Ohio? Want an Ohio guy. Just do...

Patterson is 51 years old. If Tress hangs them up in 2014, he'll be 54 years old. He's also never struck me as a guy who will coach into his late 60s, so do we really want to replace a legend with a guy who has coached for ONE year in the eastern time zone (1 year as a DBs coach at NAVY), with no Ohio ties?

Patterson would do fine, but I think there are better candidates and I wouldn't be 100% sure he would even be interested.

I want a coach with ohio ties. Don't care if its a current college coach or even a high school coach. I don't want some mother [censored]er who has no idea of the traditions of ohio state and ohio football.
I agree Elephant, thank goodness, that "Ohio ties" leave a ton of qualified coaches to choose from, it is astounding how many big time coaches have ties to Ohio, not counting the days til JT retires, but there should be plenty of candidates to choose from. I just wonder how many want to follow the legend that Tressel has built.

they want Bill Cowher as their next coach

that thing that makes college coaches terrible NFL coaches works in reverse, completely different set of skills required and all that, that is assuming that they would even take the job in the first place, which is slim to none

basically, it is a pipe dream, and a bad one at that

"Len Pasquarelli of CBS SportsLine.Com and Chris Mortensen of ESPN quoted league and university sources as saying that the 37-year-old Gruden _ an Ohio native _ had become the leading prospect. Pasquarelli reported that Gruden was flying to Columbus"

link

"Gruden also named former Ohio State standout Fred Pagac as the team?s defensive quality control coach. Pagac played four seasons with the Buckeyes, "

link

"If Jim Tressel's offensive ineptitude continues, is Jon Gruden the answer for the Buckeyes? "

link

"Others said Gruden's flirtations with other job openings (see Notre Dame and Ohio State) created a distraction."

link

I don't know who John Gruden is but if he is anything link Jon Gruden there has always been the backdrop of him coming to Columbus. I don't think there is any PSUing going on with that comment. (now my misquoted Pagac link is full of fail but there are lies, damn lies and misquoting)

Sad part is...Tressel has created a monster. He has won so many games, titles, and has created such huge shoes to fill that whoever is selected will never be able to live up to the legacy he has built. It is the coach that next next in line that has the success

Tressel has set the bar so high that I think the only logical choice is Tressel's hand picked successor. I assume that would be either Fickell or Hazel.

The program is running so strong now that you have to give it to one of those guys....assuming they're interested.

Does Bo Pelini's sideline behavior strengthen or weaken his candidacy for replacing Coach Tressel?

It doesn't weaken his candidacy. It clubs the baby seal. The last thing this university will ever do is hire a coach who might have a nationally televised sideline meltdown.

Don't want to even think about Tressel leaving, honestly. All the talk about his 'shortcomings' is nonsense to me. Offensive ineptitude? Oh, brother. How much of a mastermind is Jim to have such an outstanding record to go along with his inept offensive game plans? Give me a break.

"All he does is win!"

Indeed. Let's keep it that way.

Exactamundo. We all love Woody because we know the story of the real man behind the caricature. That being said, institutions have long memories...memories that outlive the actual people that were there at the time. For all the good that Woody did in his life, his very public slip ups caused the university some serious p.r. problems. They'll never risk that again. Pellini just showed on prime time, national television that HE is that risk.

Sometimes an institution errs in excess to prevent the mistakes of the past. For comparison's sake, think about why it took so long to fire John Cooper. Do you think it had anything to do with the p.r. hit we took for the Bruce firing? Earl's pain was John's gain....literally.

I don't either. After taking his course this past quarter I'm a total tressel homer (even more than I was.) I do think the Browns could steal him away pretty easy though LOL he loves his Brownies.
