If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

I'd get rid (or hire) nobody. We have an entire coaching staff who WANT to be here. Both the offensive and defensive staffs have to decide to be far more aggressive. Why are our def. backs always with their backs to the QB? We have too much talent for this. On offense, 4th and 1, and we run a sweep? With Hyde in our backfield?
So many people want to jump all over Luke, but it was our off. coaching that lost the Mich.St. game.

The offense bailed out or poor D all year and in this game they failed to do so.

Our (I'll show you how to spell 'our') defense had two "poor" games. Bailed out? You mean they 'did their jobs'?

I was ready to dispute this right away as I saw 5 games where the other team scored 30+, but realizing our offense works at a quicker pace creating more opportunities I wanted to dig deeper.

Defensive efficiency is one of the few stats that really takes a look at these types of issues and balances them out, and I was quite surprised to see Ohio State ranked 8th by Football Outsiders, arguably the football stats site.

This is by no means a perfect stat as it has OSU one slot ahead of MSU and I think all would say that's not the case, but overall I think it puts things in a different perspective than I originally had. At the very least it's good food for thought.

So true since the Offense allowed Michigan State to score more points than it did! :sarcastic:

Yes, they did. They played half the time intimidated. How many chances to score did they blow? How many 3-n-outs did they have? How many TDs did they drop? If they were so concerned about the defense, why was the off. game plan to throw the ball all over the place instead of controlling the clock with the best off. line and tailback in the B10? The defense could have played better. The offense is who let us down.

The defense has had more than just two poor games. They are in the midst of what is arguable the worst sustained run of scoring defense in school history. The last three seasons have seen the sixth, fourth, and fifth worst defensive seasons (respectively, from oldest to most recent) ever posted at at Ohio State.

The offense "let us down" and still put up enough points that Ohio State should have won the game. Meanwhile the defense gave up 13 points more than it's historically bad per-game average to a poor offense. The Buckeye offense has carried the team for the last two regular seasons. Off games are going to happen every once in a while, and they had one against a good team. When that kind of thing happens what is the more reasonable thing to do - hold the offense to a standard of near perfection, or ask that the defense do something to contribute to the cause every once in a while?

The defense had bad games against:

Buffalo
Cal (look at the stats, especially in the second half)
Northwestern
Wisconsin (against the pass, I don't buy the selling out to stop the run BS)
Iowa
Illinois
scUM
MSU

All of those games shared some of the same defensive breakdowns and in a couple of cases (NW, Iowa, scUM) they were damn lucky the offense was able to get moving at some point in the game because this defense wasn't stopping anything for a stretch or at all. In the MSU game they finally couldn't overcome the defensive shortcomings.

You've quoted teams that our off. had bad games against. Go back and really watch those games. Everyone scored points against Buffalo, Cal., NW., Iowa, Illinois. Wisc. played over their heads against us, as did scUM. If we were to play MSU 5 more times, we'd win every one of them.

We lost a game in two years. Get over it. You expect the Buckeyes to 'suck it up' and go kick some Clemson a&s. You could use the same advice.
