If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

You've quoted teams that our off. had bad games against.

Really?

The offensive statistics do not support your assertion.

Go back and really watch those games. Everyone scored points against Buffalo, Cal., NW., Iowa, Illinois. Wisc. played over their heads against us, as did scUM. If we were to play MSU 5 more times, we'd win every one of them.

Wait, did you just contradict yourself? And no, I seriously doubt if Ohio State (not 'we', you aren't on the team and neither am I) played MSU 5 times they would win all 5 games. Sparty is good and unlike previous decent Sparty teams, they don't Sparty themselves often. That's because of Coach Dantonio, but that is another topic.

We lost a game in two years. Get over it. You expect the Buckeyes to 'suck it up' and go kick some Clemson a&s. You could use the same advice.

The confusion from the last two sentences aside, I think you seriously miss the point (and need to look at the statistics both offensively and defensively). This was one of the worst Buckeye defenses in history. Last year's was only slightly better. Regression is most assuredly NOT a good thing but that is what it is at this point in time.

I think we've lived and died by the offense (but mostly thrived) b/c the defense is terrible ... but I don't think the offense has "masked" how bad this defense is. We've been discussing it all season

You're right. It wasn't a 'masking', it was a 'they got away with it again' type of situation.

The only issue I saw with this D was very poor and undisciplined DB play. I think that is positional coaching issues. The scheme's responsibility is to put players in position to make plays. The positional coaches jobs are to make sure their guys understand where they are supposed to be in the scheme and make the play.

The scheme was good so the DC did his job. But the whole secondary seemed to make individual mistakes. That falls on both the positional and DC heads. I would start with changing the DB coach and then give it a year.

Honestly, the DB play in the MSU game was embarrassingly bad. Poor discipline in late hits, jumping up into plays when they were supposed to have a certain area, and last but not least not looking back for balls and getting hit with piss poor PI calls (at least 2 should have been INTs). Those things IMO are all on the DB coach. I am struggling to understand how that can be happening at game 12? And we are talking about seasoned guys who are talented.

It takes a lot more that individual talent to have a great D. It requires everyone knowing where they should be (and there teammates), when they should be there, and the then the physical ability to get to those places with attitude (IND talent). I saw talented players that just where not where they needed to be at the right time which was not a talent issue but coaching.

Mike Tressel is a future DC and HC IMO. I am just not sure you can promote him to DC yet. I would expect him to take on maybe a larger role in the D scheme before you look his way. But maybe he is ready. Big jump from LB coach to DC at a B10 school (especially OSU). Plus would want to look at his recruiting record. Narduzzi is a recruiting animal. If he targets a guy he seems to rarely miss. Players love him and he can go get the big dogs as needed. As a MSU fan I hope they lock him up with some more money to keep him around. He is a major cog in the MSU machine.

With Withers apparently moving on, I hope Jon Tenuta gets a call.

That said, while some issues with Withers have been rather glaring the past two seasons IMO, he was an ace recruiter, and that's gonna be missed.

I trust Urban. But I know Tress won a NC with nowhere near the recruiting prowess as a staff. Count me in the camp that values coaching ability of greatest importance right now with regard to defensive staff. Virginia Tech, TCU, etc are just a few schools that have fielded pretty good defenses with average recruits. There are lots of other great recruiters on staff. Give me one for the secondary that can coach please.

A guy who has earned his stripes, Mike Tressel, is currently the LB/ST's coach at MSU. Coach Jim Tressel was his uncle and Mike was here 02-03 as a GA. Always thought MSU's LB's were very well disciplined and quick to react.
The only problem with that is it would leave us with only 1 coach who would be coaching the DBs, and while I love Coombs' fire, I don't know I feel comfortable with that. Under the assumption that the remainder of our defensive staff remains the same outside of withers, I think you have to go DB coach of some sort.

Yes, they did. They played half the time intimidated. How many chances to score did they blow? How many 3-n-outs did they have? How many TDs did they drop? If they were so concerned about the defense, why was the off. game plan to throw the ball all over the place instead of controlling the clock with the best off. line and tailback in the B10? The defense could have played better. The offense is who let us down.

I'll tell you why they kept trying to pass when they should have pounded MSU with the run game....they were trying to pad Braxton's stats for the passing game since he had an outside shot at being considered for the Heisman if he had a breakout game against the top defense in the nation. I am still pissed Carlos only got 4 carries after we had a 24-17 lead.

I think you're quite mistaken.

Agreed. I don't think they were trying to pad any stats. They were 1) trying to win the game and 2) get our passing game going. We can't go into a national title with a 1-dimensional offense, and though we started the season balanced, we have shifted to a run only offense. Very hard to win a NC with a 1 dimensional offense.
