If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

Here's what I think I know:

Chavis is out. Scratch him off your list and move on. Finkes has a better chance of being the next DC at OSU.
Vance Joseph is supposedly interviewing this weekend but it sounds like there are NFL teams interested in him as well.
Mike Tressel makes some sense but I don't think he fits what Urban is looking for. Just my observation.
The only time I've heard Teryl Austin's name is when it has been brought up my fan sites. Have not heard his name legitimately attached to this search.
The names I have heard so far are Mike Stoops, DJ Durkin, Gene Chizik, Lorenzo Ward and to a lesser extent Chuck Heater.
A name I have not heard but would love to hear is Derek Mason.
Austin might be in line for a pro job as a DC.
Mason's name is being brought up as a possible candidate for the DC job at Louisville.
Ward is the DC at South Carolina. Do not know why he would leave.

Just my two cents, but I'd rather find the best teacher I can find rather than whoever the hottest name is that might leave in a year or two anyways. Heacock isn't flashy, but he has a track record here. Mike Tressel will not be hired but he's proven his worth up in East Lansing. Fickell can recruit, most of the other coaches can recruit, I want some good teachers. Not saying that the names being mentioned aren't, but I want some longevity. Besides, you're not getting a guy like Stoops to leave his brother to share the reigns with Fickell. Bringing in Heacock to coach DL and Taver Johnson to do safeties would be my two favorite hires.

I do think that Taver did a fantastic job here and would be an excellent hire for the DBs. However, didn't he already leave knowing UFM was coming? Not sure why he would come back for the same position he already left unless we throw a ton of money at him. I also like Heacock a ton if he is interested in coming back for a year or two.

he got a promotion:
assistant head coach/linebackers coach

if Meyer woulda offered Co-DC he probably would have stayed

I'm definitely on the Heacock bandwagon. Urban was an assistant under Heacock at some point early on in his career, but I can't remember where that was.

The #1 problem with Heacock might be his recruiting. He is almost at the other end of the spectrum from what Urban seems to want in that regard.

Coaching conference is in Indianapolis this weekend. We might hear something as soon as next week.
Correct. This conference is just like any other conference that a normal business person would attend..... formal sessions on hot button topics trending in the industry and arguing over potential future changes (ie next year's playoff structure). But what happens in the hallways, outside of those formal sessions is where coaching discussions often begin and interests start to develop. Even with the current coaching carousel spinning at a high rate, I think we'll see many assistant coaching changes AFTER this conference. The assistant coach dialogue will be at an all-time high this weekend. I agree w/Coqui, thinking we'll know more at this time next week. However, recruiting can also slow the process. Some coaches may wait until the class is signed before making an official move on a coach.

After Earle was fired Heacock gave Urban his first post-GA gig at Illinois St (LBs in 88, then QBs & WRs in 89). Urban reunited with Earle at Colorado St in 1990.
