If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

The one thing that caught my eye with the Vrabel departure was the pay of $291,000. It seemed low to me, but then I realized that's more than a lot of head coaches make in the NCAA.

Still, I think the new guys coming in may be making a little more and two offensive coaches will be getting raises (Warriner and Herman).

Huh.. no D1 coach makes less than than that.. maybe Miami of Ohio... that's it.. out of 126 D1 spots

Bowden makes $400K at Akron

I'll still push for Mike Tressel & DJ Durkin - both are attainable. While Durkin is the 'DC' for UF, that's in name only as Mussy controls the D. People in and around the UF team give the lions share of the player development to DJ and he's going to get a gig sooner than later. Don't think Tressel is a realistic hire, in the least, but I can dream.

I hope that most people weren't seriously invested in Finkes as the next DL coach in the first place. I don't get the infatuation with former players as coaches... especially when they have no prior coaching experience.

Just for the record, Finkes does have many years of HS coaching experience, as DL coach and D-coordinator at Neece (Jacksonville) '03-04, Piqua '05-08, St. Paris Graham '09 (also wrestling coach), and Hilliard Darby '10-12, after several years bouncing around in the pro game.

Here's what I think I know:

Chavis is out. Scratch him off your list and move on. Finkes has a better chance of being the next DC at OSU.
Vance Joseph is supposedly interviewing this weekend but it sounds like there are NFL teams interested in him as well.
Mike Tressel makes some sense but I don't think he fits what Urban is looking for. Just my observation.
The only time I've heard Teryl Austin's name is when it has been brought up my fan sites. Have not heard his name legitimately attached to this search.
The names I have heard so far are Mike Stoops, DJ Durkin, Gene Chizik, Lorenzo Ward and to a lesser extent Chuck Heater.
A name I have not heard but would love to hear is Derek Mason.

Gene Chizik?
Currently unemployed (so no potential buyouts).
Was the DC at Auburn in 2004 when they went undefeated and was named the 2004 Broyles Award winner. Auburn led the country giving up just 11.2 PPG.
Was Co-DC at Texas when they won a national championship in 2005. Texas was 5th nationally at 14.6 PPG.
Took Iowa State from 102nd nationally to 65th in total defense in his first year.
Obviously his final year at Auburn was a disaster but he is respected as a great coordinator...and some guys are just better suited as coordinators. Maybe Chizik is one of those guys?

Coqui is right...something will likely come out of the coaching conference. It's like the winter baseball meetings.

Nice summation.
Wad why would Mike Stoops leave his brother.
I think Durkin is the leader in the club house based on my modeling.
I'm also not convinced tat one more assistant will "take another opportunity".
