A rather large percentage would still be trying to sue Yahoo for libel.

A rather large percentage would have fired him in '04 in favor of Walt Harris for not scoring 70/game.

The best part? A significant percentage would fall into both groups.

I think is is at least interesting that Gordon Gee, President of Ohio State, who makes 1.6 million dollars per year and Gene Smith, Athletic Director of Ohio State, who makes about 1.1 milllion dollars per year have both unequivically staked their professional reputations to Jim Tressel. It is at least equally interesting that we have not heard one Ohio State recruit for the highly ranked 2011 class lament their choice. We have not heard one of their parents lament their son's choice. We have not had one of the awesome 2012 verbal commitments even waver in their decision. These people, to varying degrees have tied their professional, financial, educational, and football futures to Jim Tressel while the entire print, radio, and television sports media world tell us that the end is nigh for Jim Tressel and that Ohio State's football program is set to be bombed back to the stone age. I'm more than a little curious as to whether all the facts necessary to draw an intelligent conclusion in this saga have been placed in the public domain.

I'm positive they have not. The presser was clearly not entirely forthcoming, and there are legitimate legal reasons for it. It doesn't make me feel any better about what was said, but it does make me take a wait and see approach until the NCAA makes its ruling.

While Gordon Gee might not have a future in comedy, his future as president of the university is hardly tied to JT.

from what I know and have seen I don't see how Tressel will survive this. The negative publicity is bad and growing worse. I guess it could eventually subside, but I don't think so. Besides, the NCAA sanctions could end up being significantly worse than 5 games.

from what I know and have seen there is no way to defend Tressel reasonably here. He covered up information mutiple times over the course of 8 months despite knowing that it was in appropriate.

Tressel is great but he is < The Ohio STate University

Ohio State isn't going to fire Jim Tressel. If the NCAA brings the hammer down he'll almost certainly resign/retire and ride off into the sunset at this point.

There's no way Ohio State will use the negative publicity/perception excuse to force him out. That stuff just does not equate in this situation with anyone other than the fans and haters.

Essentially, if the NCAA keeps things as they are, nothing further will happen to JT from the University. Anything it possible and it's still premature to draw specific conclusions, because as Jake said, there is no way in hell we have all of the details involved.

And I'll continue to defend THE MAN that is Jim Tressel. I don't think there is much doubt about where and what his intentions are - his actions in this matter are another thing entirely in my IMO. I don't think anyone feels worse about this situation than he does.

I sure hope you're right about not having all the details....unless those details reveal that someone else within the administration kept a lid on the emails. But at that point we will have a much bigger problem than whether or not to keep our coach.

I agree.

I just don't see how the same people who orchestrated multiple different press conferences with ease and clarity could give a press conference THAT screwy without holding something significant back....

1. First sentence is absolutely on target.

2. Tressel, like him or hate him, has had an enormous positive influence on fundraising, which in turn has had an enormous influence on such things as our new library, new medical college facilities, and new student recreational facilities. Any objective analysis would confirm this.

but the press conference 2 weeks ago was very hastily put together because of Yahoo's article coming out. I think Gee & Smith were so genuinely surprised (ambushed) by the extensive nature of Tressel's hiding the facts from them that they didn't have time to think it through.

As great of a man as Tressel is he is not bigger than OSU and he is not above the rules. From the looks of it, JT didn't simply cut a few corners, he flat out broke one of the cardinal rules of the NCAA....unless there are more facts than what we have seen. But if there's more, it's bound to be institutional wide which means much bigger sanctions.

This is exactly the problem. Less than intelligent yahoo's are rampant in the print, radio and television world. The Bruce Hooley's of the world are loud and only beat a drum to draw attention to their otherwise empty drivel.

1) hasty or not, it was simply ODD. There's clearly something else going on and details we do not know at this point.

2) I think it's a bit pre-mature to say he was "hiding" the facts as in he was "lying" as the braying donkeys on the radio and the TV would have us believe. Clearly he made a mistake and no one is disputing that at this point, but calling his omission a "lie" seems like a public lynching than what should actually be said.

GPA.

I don't think we can have it both ways. One side is saying the man clearly shamed himself and Ohio State to the point that he should be fired while a distinctly smaller subset of that group is saying his impact on the university isn't anything special.

I don't think that's logical in the least. Either he has had a positive impact in the past on the university at large or what he does doesn't matter at all in the grand scheme of things.

I have gone over this many times like I am sure everyone else has. Some of it makes sense some of it doesn't and the amateur hour press conference the athletic department threw together did not help the situation.

That being said I still sit her today thinking that Jim Tressel could not have been that stupid to sit on those e-mails without acting on them. He works for a public university subject to public records requests. He is aware of these policies and thinks nothing will come of it??? Everyone in that type of position is aware of it.....I just don't buy it....this is what worries me and makes me wonder what other surprises are awaiting
