HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

You're missing the point why those games were close in the first place. We should've boat raced that 2019 Clemson team but kept choking inside the redzone and played tighter as the game wore on. Same with Oregon both years and Penn State every year. He just hopes to stay close in big games so he isn't embarrassed, even when he clearly has an advantage in talent/match-ups to win decisively. He's mentally broken. It's like watching Ben Simmons play basketball now. He's petrified of the moment
This sums it up perfectly. When it comes down to it, Day's teams are mentally soft. It feels like the minute a team punches back in any significant way they just freeze up. Urban's teams rarely played a clean game in big games but they also were never afraid of the moment like Day's teams are. Even 31-0 felt more like the result of JT Barrett not being able to throw a forward pass anymore rather than players just freezing up.

The temper tantrum is getting old, bro. We get it, you hate Day.

Blaming the loss on the fans is an absolute crock of shit. And using Steve Deace as an opinion of any credibility is laughable. I was in the nosebleeds screaming my lungs out every single damn down we were on defense. A lot of fans were doing so too, desperate for the offense and special teams to do anything. That game is on Ryan Day and his staff that he assembled. Rooting for the team is irrelevant to the discussion we're having. Obviously we are all rooting for them and will continue to do so. The discussion is whether Ryan Day is the right coach to lead this program. If what you've seen has convinced you he is, so be it. I haven't seen it, and I don't see it changing. Expecting to beat that team is the standard. It boggles my mind I have to explain that to any Buckeye fan, but apparently quite a few on here have lost the plot.

I'll leave this article as a reminder: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...a-rivalry-urban-meyer-final-gold-pants-speech

"You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever. And you work it every day. And I don’t give a shit if you’re from California or Texas or whatever, as soon as you say you’re a Buckeye this is part of your life for the rest of your life - and you don’t lose to those pricks. You beat them every day. Every day."
I’m not blaming the fans. I’m saying we aren’t very great if things aren’t going our way.

That stadium is far too dead even in the biggest games If things aren’t going to plan.

We could do better at staying in the game and certainly not booing.

The myth of the "superior team" is not based on anything realistic. This team has weaknesses. They were evident all year long.

It's not a particularly strong offensive line.
The D-front four couldn't get sacks on their own.
There were no capable backups when a #1 went down.
Yes, the wide receiver corps was excellent.
Yes, the D-backs were excellent.
Yes, the defense came through in every game, except for Oregon.
But the O-line never jelled and once the left tackle went down, the running game, center-QB exchange, and pass protection suffered.

Michigan has won the last 4 games without a five-star QB, without NFL-level receivers. I don't care if they knew the Buckeye's signals or not; they consistently beat up our O-line and handled our D-line when the chips were down. They developed as a team throughout the season. They had depth in both their lines. The Buckeyes deteriorated through the season and had no depth on either line.

Per AG at Letterman Row(tifwiw):
I spoke to like 50 different people connected at Ohio State since the game ended yesterday. That group includes some pretty influential donors, NIL people, athletic department contacts, and others that definitely would have a sense of what is going on and could happen with the Buckeyes moving forward.

Wanted to share what I have in the best way I think to communicate it all:
  • After the game, the sentiment was the same of much of the fan base: Day needs to go and there is no way to survive this loss to that team. Even had one donor that everyone would know on here say they'll do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.
  • I think after everyone has slept on it, some cooler heads have prevailed. It's not as black and white as "Day lost to Michigan for a 4th straight time so he is fired". There's way more involved:
    • First, there is a big buyout. I have seen that $37M number floating around and I believe that is the ballpark it is in. Not sure people want to fund that, pay for another coach, and pay for NIL.
    • I think the other issue is there is not a clear cut go to that would be just as good if not better than Day. I know people are sick of hearing that, but it matters when you're talking about the financial investment needed to make this change.
    • Finally, and most importantly, the consideration of what a change at the top does to the current roster was brought up to me many times. Would you rather have Day make some more critical changes to the staff and the way he goes about things and keep guys like Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, Caleb Downs, etc. or are you OK with a new coach coming in and potentially almost every good player you have being a risk to jump in the portal, virtually a complete rebuild? Most people I spoke to prefer the former.
  • On top of all this, there is still a season to play here. Ohio State is 10-2 and could be as high as a 6-seed and probably no lower than an 8-seed. While Ryan Day clearly has let Michigan live in his head "rent free", he still can coach this team to beat and play with anyone else in America. There's still a job to do and there's no decision to be made just yet anyway, but obviously have to look into all of the options.
I understand everyone's answer is "Fire Day". I'm not saying that's off the table. I'm not saying he deserves another chance, anything short of a national title. But after talking to people now that the dust has settled a bit on the emotions of Saturday's game, I think there's a strong chance that Ohio State retains Day, at least for one more year, and just forces some changes to the staff and approach versus just moving on and potentially having to start from ground zero.

We'll see what happens from here on out, but it's not as easy as "Fire Day".
AG is very locked in with the program, and has also mentioned that Vrabel is pretty much out, as he expects an NFL HC job, and Urban has 0 interest in coaching again.

He's not going anywhere unless he does it on his own. Now it is time to figure out how to improve for the future.
I wish it was that simple. I do not see how we "get better" under Ryan Day. There are people that are built to handle high stress/high leverage situations and there are people that are wired to falter in those situations. Ryan Day at this point is very clearly the latter. The disparity between the way his teams play against the Iowa's, Indiana's, Purdue's, and Sparty's of the world and how tight, uncomfortable, and nervous they play against tCun is stark and embarrassing. And don't give me Ped Aggy; James Franklin is just Ryan Day on steroids. Those two facing off is just the two Spidermans pointing meme.

We have 4 years of empirical data. We have how many years now of our special teams being a complete shit show? How many times in close games/losses have we watched his team go out there and ram their heads against a brick wall because their coach refuses to adjust and move away from a game plan that is clearly not working? I think Ryan Day is a smart man. You do not get to his position in his profession being a dummy. But he is lacking something mentally that great coaches have. And fair or not, great is the standard at Ohio State.

I know we are not moving on from him anytime soon. I know there are myriad reasons for Bjork to keep him around. I know it's not as black/white for him as it is for us fans. Unfortunately, we're being held hostage by a coach that cannot get the job done and tick the most important box in many of our minds. I think our best hope is that Day tires of the pressure and the trappings of today's CFB world and moves on to another job like the NFL or something. It sucks, but that's the current situation. A lot of us were saying to enjoy every moment of that incredible run from 2001-2019 because it wouldn't last forever. We found two coaches who not only got how important beating those pricks was, they had the stones to go out there and do it almost every single year. And here we are now, going the other way. This too won't last forever, but for the time being, it's the situation. A big shit sandwich and everyone has to take a bite.

No not generally awesome.

Can we all agree we were fucked over in 2019 though? We were a missed FG away from beating UGA too. Let’s not forget last year when the OL was different, no QB and no Marv.

Yep he tends to lose close games. This time though there’s no 2019 Clemson, 2020 Alabama and for sure no 2022 UGA.

We all know in these games under day we at least perform well. We have been right there vs these great teams. We just need to finish and that’s the big question right? Can we do it?

If it means shitting on TCUN? I think we can.
At this point we can only hope he is Tom Osbourne 2.0 instead of Cooper 2.0. Osbourne started off with a poor record against Oklahoma, and didn't have a winning bowl record until the 1990s. He had a reputation of not winning the big one, until all of a sudden, he did. Unfortunately since the 1990s, coaches have usually only won titles within their first few of years at a program. Saban being the big exception. Day is probably not going to be fired unless the donors buy out his contract. So I am willing to wait until after the playoff to have that discussion.

I'll have to disagree here. OSU had every talent and coaching staff needed to win on Saturday November 30. No lie, I can name about 20 people on this site alone who could look at that scUM defense and say "that's one of the worst DB collections I've seen, I should go after them". Anyone who watches CFB knows how good JJ Smith and Egbuka are, and Kelly barely utilized them. I'm not trying to hear about the wind, they can move the ball with slants, curls, screens and outs without the deep ball. But Kelly and Day thought it'd be a better idea to just run the RBs into the line over and over again, and then punt. Stop with trying to prove to everyone that you're tough and can run the ball, everyone in CFB knows that OSU has some of the best QBs and WRs, USE THEM! You don't need to prove yourself that you have a run based team, when it's obvious they're not.

Fire Kelly, Fire Frye, Fire LJSr, find as many portal OL as you can, find a portal kicker, find a punter.... thats step 1
That and Ryan Day needs somebody to print off the quote in my signature, frame it, and put it within eye's view all over the WHAC.

I don't know how he prepares for The Game, but I remember reading/hearing that JT/Urb made preparing for The Game a regular part of their practices throughout the season. There's no way Day is doing that. He needs to. It feels like we've strayed far from that mentality.
