I spoke to like 50 different people connected at Ohio State since the game ended yesterday. That group includes some pretty influential donors, NIL people, athletic department contacts, and others that definitely would have a sense of what is going on and could happen with the Buckeyes moving forward.
Wanted to share what I have in the best way I think to communicate it all:
- After the game, the sentiment was the same of much of the fan base: Day needs to go and there is no way to survive this loss to that team. Even had one donor that everyone would know on here say they'll do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.
- I think after everyone has slept on it, some cooler heads have prevailed. It's not as black and white as "Day lost to Michigan for a 4th straight time so he is fired". There's way more involved:
- First, there is a big buyout. I have seen that $37M number floating around and I believe that is the ballpark it is in. Not sure people want to fund that, pay for another coach, and pay for NIL.
- I think the other issue is there is not a clear cut go to that would be just as good if not better than Day. I know people are sick of hearing that, but it matters when you're talking about the financial investment needed to make this change.
- Finally, and most importantly, the consideration of what a change at the top does to the current roster was brought up to me many times. Would you rather have Day make some more critical changes to the staff and the way he goes about things and keep guys like Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, Caleb Downs, etc. or are you OK with a new coach coming in and potentially almost every good player you have being a risk to jump in the portal, virtually a complete rebuild? Most people I spoke to prefer the former.
- On top of all this, there is still a season to play here. Ohio State is 10-2 and could be as high as a 6-seed and probably no lower than an 8-seed. While Ryan Day clearly has let Michigan live in his head "rent free", he still can coach this team to beat and play with anyone else in America. There's still a job to do and there's no decision to be made just yet anyway, but obviously have to look into all of the options.
I understand everyone's answer is "Fire Day". I'm not saying that's off the table. I'm not saying he deserves another chance, anything short of a national title. But after talking to people now that the dust has settled a bit on the emotions of Saturday's game, I think there's a strong chance that Ohio State retains Day, at least for one more year, and just forces some changes to the staff and approach versus just moving on and potentially having to start from ground zero.
We'll see what happens from here on out, but it's not as easy as "Fire Day".
