HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Yeah there is an argument to be made that Meyer would fare much better in the 12 team CFP era cause those WTF's wouldn't hurt you and he was generally great against the top end teams barring the WTF against Clemson.

Day seems like a steadier coach. Less likely for WTF's but mearly decent against the high end.

But people are also super hard on Day. That defense not showing up didn't start with Day. It started with Meyer and his QB power offense was starting to become stale.

The question is would Meyer adapt like Saban did? I'd like to think his hiring of Day means yes but we will never know.
A steady coach doesn't take on an inferior opponent, the program's rival no less, two years in a row, and get his team's clock cleaned.

And I'm not even talking about the WTFickingly unsatisfying puke-in-my-mouth head-scratching wins against far inferior opponents.

He's not shown the ability to light a fire under his teams' asses. And the way he's talking (like a politician trying not to piss anyone off), he's also not doing that this time.

EDIT: I would describe Tressel as a "steady coach".

Speaking of the senator. If Tressel would've stayed the coach from 2011-today. How would he have done in the following?

1. Record
2. Recruiting
3. Playoffs

I think Tressel would have done very similar to Urban. 2011 would have been a monster year with Pryor etc and IMO we win the big ten title from 2011-2014 at least. I think recruiting wise our teams stay fairly similar to his roots (lots of Ohio kids). However in the playoffs I'm not sure how he beats Alabama in 2014 or the SEC in any of the other playoffs.

Tress probably wouldn't be ok with a section of the present fanbase on the trajectory he was on.

It feels like he was trending towards 10-2/9-3 towards the end. A certain section of the fanbase would be fine with that as long as he kept kicking TSUN's ass. But since Meyer we expect to be the National championship Convo every year.

Urban came, and left, just in time.

I wouldn't sat that. He went 83-9 overall (no Ohio State football coach had a better win %), 5-2 in bowl games, 54-4 in the B1G, 7-0 vs scUM, and 1 Natty. He went 12-0 his first year and might have won another Natty; however, the team was on probation and couldn't go to a bowl game.

The transfer portal and NIL has definitely changes the game; however, I believe that he could effectively deal with both changes. He might have been the best recruiter in the history of Ohio State football too. He wasn't referred to as "The Closer" for nothing.

Now Ryan Day is a very good coach; but so far (i.e. after 4 seasons) I do believe he is "a small step" down from Urban.

Small ..If Day can win three NCs I’m good with calling him better. Urban is a legend.

2009 he has the #5 recruiting class, in 2010 he goes 12-1 beating Arkansas in Sugar Bowl heading into 2010 with Pryor and co. & Braxton on deck with Cardale/Burrow/Haskins in the hole. Haskins and Burrow were both coming here, with or without Urban.

1. Begin by not underestimating your enemy.
2. Michigan is one of a handful of programs with the history, facilities, alum support, and money to be in the NC hunt consistently. It's only since the retirement of LLLLLLoyd Carr until the last two years that they haven't been.
3. There are advantages to both grabbing for a class of five and four stars and going with three stars and transfers. I'm guessing that Hairball has someone on his staff (Biff Poggibait?) who is good at getting three stars pissed off at all the media attention given to the five and four stars on the other guy's team. There's also an advantage to having guys around for four and five years. Having spent a career watching the physical development of high school kids I can tell you that a freshman who can play with juniors and seniors is a freak and that growth development doesn't end at 18 - 19 - 20.
4. Put me down in the category of "underestimated Hairball and Michigan." Give me a check mark next to "Thinks young talent will consistently win over experience and age."

I agree. Lets review what happened after winning the Natty in 2014.

2015: Missed the playoff, didn't win the Big Ten with arguably the best team in OSU history
2016: Didn't win the Big Ten, lost 0-31 to Clemson in the playoff
2017: Missed the playoff
2018: Missed the playoff

Things weren't exactly trending in the right direction. The one thing Urban did have going for him, however, was that he had a stranglehold over Michigan.

#2 just isn't true. They had one year with Llllllllllllloyd. Other than that, they've been average on a good year since the 40s.
