HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

.. so firmly in the "we're always going to suck without JSN" camp.
I guess "next man up" mentality doesn't work in 2020s.
Because some would rather shed tears over a season that was lost due to a few freakish injuries to key players and just shrug, saying "we'll kick their asses next year... just wait... you'll see..." than to come out and admit that the head coach and the staff didn't come close to earning their paychecks this season.

It's "loser talk" as Day himself says.

Here are the other two that jumped out at me:
  • Day says the "number one" priority at Ohio State must be the development of the players. "Certainly there's gonna be opportunities with NIL that were never here before. ... But where are you gonna be in three to five years?
  • Day says players have "a lot of flexibility right now" in college football, and that "there are a lot of things going on right now that I know are hard for guys to walk away from. ... We're doing everything we can to do the right thing."
Where are you going to be in 3-5 years? You can't try and sell development alone to compensate for a weak NIL game and the "do the right thing" stuff pops up all over the place. It's the wild west, there are no rules or enforcement in place right now. Go compete. The boy scout routine is an excuse at this point imo.
"Do the right thing" has always been a red flag phrase for me...

The "right thing" for who?

I personally don’t think we are prepared for that fight right now.

As a UFC fan, Michigan would be the top class wrestler that applies all the pressure. We are the talented striker with limited grappling skills…..you put your money on the wrestler/BJJ guy nearly every time because fights get messy.

It will take time for us to overcome what Michigan is currently…the good news is I think we can get better in some areas and I don’t think Michigan can sustain what they have in some areas.
I'm now hearing this phrase more and more.

Serious question... how is what they're doing non sustainable?

Because they have absolutely benefitted from the free “Covid” year that they (the NCAA) gave to every player who was enrolled at school when Covid hit (year 2020).

Because Michigan is less focused on developing for NFL and much more focused on developing a physical ass, experienced team……they have took to the portal as well as their own roster to create one of the oldest rosters in the country, year in/year out.

Other schools utilizing this strategy to recent success are Wake Forest and NC State…..Wake and NC State were two of the oldest rosters in country last 2 years and saw good success.

The thing that’s interesting is the age gap remained consistent from 2021 to 2022 for all (3) teams. That’s bc they can capitalize on this strategy, essentially through 2024….and they will. All (3) teams will comb through the transfer portal looking for grown men who are low tier NFL prospects who want an opportunity at a P5 program. The reason Michigan does so well is they are already starting with better players and getting P5 recruits who are junior/seniors who want a taste of national success.

The reason many say the window will close eventually, is because the kids who took a redshirt, and then take advantage of the free year (so essentially 2 free years) closes in 2024.

You hate to point to Covid as a benefit for anything, but in this case, it has certainly helped Harbaugh mold a team to his dream picture. Every year he has an experienced ass offensive and defensive line and sprinkles in underclassmen talent at skill positions. That single extra year is critical in keeping kids happy though because it extends their ability to play…..tell a junior he will only get 1 year to play (his senior year) and it’s prob hard to keep them on roster. Tell them they get (2) years and it’s worth it. That expires relatively soon…..

I get the logic, but everybody got the covid year, so in a way that would kind of wash out. Yes, for last year and this year it means that the roster is, on average, a year older.

That said, I think their strategy of basically cherry picking more experienced guys from the transfer portal is viable and sustainable. It seems that they're managing their resources and shifting more focus on getting players out of the portal rather than spend a huge amount of time and resources on recruiting high school kids who, when the times comes, maybe actually come on campus (and stay on campus) AND actually live up to their billing, especially on the defensive and offensive line where recruits are so difficult to project.

But, as you say, time will tell. I'm just not 100% sold on the idea that Harbaugh can't keep this strategy up. I think 2024 will be an interesting year.

They seem to have gone harder on the transfer portal this year then others. That speaks their development isn't up to snuff.

It's one of those things that will work till it doesn't bit it requires making the right choices in the transfer portal and those choices choosing them. Just like recruiting

I think one of the unintended consequences of relying too heavily on the transfer portal is that it’s going to damage your relationship with high school coaches.

No idea if that impacts tsun or whatnot.

Right. But why focus on development, especially with some hit-or-miss positions (especially OL) when you can just take proven players - albeit probably not elite - out of the portal?

Not every team can do everything perfectly: recruiting, development, S&C, NIL, whatever... it's just a matter of focusing on what you're better at and not sweating the other stuff.

Will it work long term? We'll see. But it seems that they've had more success with their 3* recruits and getting older kids from the portal than what OSU has done with their approach the last few years. It's a choice: swing for the bleachers every time or look for singles and doubles and grind out wins.

I'm not shedding tears over shit. If it makes you feel better, ignore it. But we're trying to be realistic about what Day can do with the program, not how mad we are following a loss and the time honored "iNjUrIeS sHoUldN't MaTtEr!".

The only loser talk Im seeing is crying and obsessing about a new Cooper and Stroud being SOFT because he wont run and magically fix the offense. Half the board is bending over a barrel saying "please sir, go in dry" and acting like that's the only reasonable response.

last year had plenty of talent in the veteran ranks.

there's also the matter of it working because OSU forgot how to run, defend or be calm under pressure. How many urban teams would they have beaten? maybe 2017?

their recruiting was horrendous last year, because he wanted nothing to do with coming back. They still haven't recruited that well.

you can build a Wisconsin with resources and do that lots of ways, without recruiting well. Good luck sustaining it on the national stage. that said, it's truly remarkable that they're about to get TCU and then possibly OSU again as their only roadblocks to a NC. meanwhile OSU has had Bama, Clemson, LSU 19, etc in their way.

"loser talk" is a phrase that day used. i don't remember after which game... maybe iowa or northwestern.

EDIT: he used to label some of his own explanations about some of the mistakes and missed assignments on the offensive side of the ball.

the way i'd say that is that ttun has done a remarkable job of winning regardless of what hand they've been dealt. and it's also an open question, for me, whether OSU stumbled against bama, clemson, lsu19, etc because they lacked talent or because they , conversely, weren't able to use the hand they were dealt to claw out a win.
