HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...he-michigan-loss-the-buckeyes-cant-feel-sorry

Good article from 11W on the aftermath of the Game. Perspective and leadership by JT. Also talks about Day.

Beyond Tuimoloau, Vincent said Day provided plenty of motivation for the Buckeyes in his own right. While it wasn’t certain at the time, Vincent said the practices only took place because Day felt “we're gonna make the playoffs.” He didn’t want the team to be caught off guard in the event that it snuck into the field of four

Doesn’t sound like Day is sitting on his ass and wallowing in pity. Will things change, I guess we shall see.

Especially when many of the issues we keep talking about are fixed with a healthy JSN.

What issues get fixed with JSN?
Certainly not the cute playcalling or Day losing the plot in redzone. JSN won't fix the run game or fix Stroud' preference to take bad sacks over running.
MH Jr is the best WR in the country. Egbuka is an All American in his own right.

Is this team better with JSN? Certainly. But i dont see how he's a silver bullet for the issues on offense, which mostly seem to be mental on coaching staff.

ehh....there's something to be said for having the guy your QB is most comfortable with out on the field. And while it doesn't excuse the play calling, I'm certain Day had a set of playcalls specifically set for JSN that he either continued to call (Maybe the screens?) and didn't find the right fit OR he didn't call at all. We know Day can be stubborn when it comes to adjusting his play calling schemes so....yeah

I'm gonna be honest with you, I don't have much confidence in Day as our coach at the moment. He struggles against scum, he's struggling on the recruiting front, struggling with NIL, doesn't know how to update injuries, his teams aren't known for toughness, and lately his play calling and game management has not been great. If he can somehow pull a national title out of his ass then all is forgiven from me. But I'm not expecting it to be honest.

Yeah I sense a little bit of this too.

Although I'll say that NIL isn't his fault which is the sole reason why we are falling behind a bit recruiting wise (still top 7 anyways). No doubt he is "on the ropes" as a heavy weight head coach I think. Two straight years with no big ten title or division title due to the ttun losses hurts OSU more than we realize due to how we lost both games. If he gets embarrassed by Georgia I'll be pretty concerned. Even if we lose in a hard fought classic I'm okay with that because sometimes you lose close games. However, get embarrassed? That would mean the last 4 talent equated games would be lopsided. Sure we can beat Akron 70-7 but shoot I'm confident I can lead the team to at least 9-3 every year with the talent we have. Thats not boosting me up btw that's just how talented I think these last 4 OSU teams have been. We typically are just so much more skilled than other teams. What matters is what you do vs teams who are similar and this one has got to be better than the last 3.

This game is crucial because at the pace we are going for NIL we will have a harder and harder time putting teams on the field to compete with Georgia, Alabama etc. If we can beat UGA and redeem that ttun loss for a title then that'll kick start NIL etc

While I agree that there were probably plays designed with JSN in mind that might not be working without him, Would CJ really be the most comfortable with him at this point? I seem to recall that when he DID try to play against Toledo and especially Iowa that the passing game look out of sync and forced in trying to go to JSN instead of taking what was there.

Guys...Day lost to TSUN. Twice.

None of us like it. There are a lot of things that need to get fixed before the CFP. Injuries have been critical and they aren't getting fixed. Ohio State is still capable of winning the NC.

All year long, some consistent themes emerged in BP. The defense was fixed by a hire. Harbaugh was an idiot and TSUN wasn't the team that they were the year before. Ohio State was winning NIL big time and they would beat them ugly in the 'Shoe.

Now, everything about Day is derogatory. The defense is terrible. An alternative is that many of these opinions exaggerate the true state of affairs.

BP is not this kind of place. We are not so short-sighted as to not understand that things turn around. The last 20 years of The Game are a streak like no other for Ohio State. What has to happen now is for these players or the players next year to turn things around again.

So, how can they do that? We have many posters who have played the game at this high level. Others who are coaching in high school and see things that most fans do not see. Over the years, we have had so many excellent posts like that, which we all appreciated.

BP is not a place to piss, moan, and whine out an unsubstantiated opinion that just repeats what we all feel in different words: we are disappointed to lose The Game at home (or ever) in that fashion and concerned that this may be a pattern of behavior going forward.

Please don't sit by your telephone waiting for Day to call and apologize because, after all, you put your "concerns" out there in a couple of three line posts on BP.

It's the holiday season. A time to spend with family and loved ones. A time to be charitable in thought, word, and deed.

Day knows that Buckeye fans are disappointed. So are the players and coaching staff. Day does not have time to give two shits about what fans think. He does not owe any of us an explanation. He has a job to do. So does the rest of the coaching staff and players. And if this young coach and his staff and players cannot get that done, then Gene Smith has a job to do.

What I know is that if it were not for Ohio State, many of our lives would be much different...and not for the better.

The time for a meltdown has long passed. Right now, this team needs its fanbase to pull their heads out of their asses and support the team. Let potential recruits see that the fans may be disappointed but stand behind this team through thick and thin. Please show this team your support in what you say.

Very well said.

I'll just say that I'm a bit nervous for this Georgia game for what a bad loss could do but you're right most of our fans have done poorly since that ttun game.

Very spoiled fanbase that's for sure

If it gets rid of 20-something Facebook fan boys, who think it's their birthright to win "a natty" every other year, a bad loss would have some positive effect.

Old farts like me aren't going anywhere. I lived the Earle and Cooper years, and OSU has been about more than just football to me for decades now. Have I become spoiled over the last 20 years? You bet, I won't deny it, but I'm also going to question things when a still relatively-new coach gets out-foxed by a veteran coach.

Ryan Day isn't getting fired any time soon. I hope he continues to grow into the role and answers all of the questions. We'll see, but I won't pretend to not have doubts.

Yeah. My undergrad years were a steady stream of Earl's 9 and 3s followed by the depths of the first Cooper years. Come at me.

Am I taking crazy pills? You're acting like this offense was completely dysfunctional. With a healthy Miyan they're significantly better running the ball, and were a key piece away from being dominant. I get that playcalling has been bad in stretches, but to act like missing your top 3 RBs and top WR is just something you overcome by not being cute is ridiculous.

The short passing game is much more effective with JSN's ability to get seperation and he's much more effective at making something out of nothing on screens. JSN completely changes the spacing of a defense and can move around the field to get mismatches. Play calls look much smarter when your 3rd WR is Egbuka instead of Fleming who is mostly just proficient at running streaks downfield.
