HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Wasnt this the first B1G game that Day lost? I realize who it was to, and believe me no one hates that more than I do…but it seems a bit premature to be ready to cut bait on a guy who is, what, 26-1 in conference games or something like that? Get back to me when we are losing to Indiana and Wisconsin like ol’ 9-3 Earle. Or lose 5 in a row to dUMb. Or something.

Counterpoint; Earl was 5-4 in The Game and had the best conference win % of any B1G coach during his 9 years iirc and no one was arguing that he had to go. They just weren't happy with the way it was done.

Point being, beating up on the B1G and even head above water in The Game isn't enough.

For the Day defenders what is the breaking point for you? I think he has some problems to overcome. I’ll be ready to move on if he loses to scUM and it’s his second loss and we are off to a bowl where we wonder if he can motivate his team again.

  1. If the run D looks like shit again in '22 and beyond, especially against QBs that can't pass the ball to save their lives. I can live with being carved up by elite QBs in the postseason, but any competent defense should be able to stop the run by committing enough bodies. Fingers crossed that Knowles can make a difference here.
  2. If the Buckeyes lose to a TTUN team without Hutchinson and Ojabo. I don't think Buckeyes fans (or DFBIA for that matter) fully appreciate how truly generational the TTUN DL talent is in '21. TTUN has elite game wrecking edge on both sides. Hutchinson & Ojabo are consensus 1st round picks. Hutchinson consensus top 3 even; Ojabo I have seen mocked as high as top-10.
To put things into perspective, Georgia, with all its 5 stars and 3/4 stars who are basically 5 stars on D, doesn't have a Hutchinson or an Ojabo. (They had an Adam Anderson, who was suspended on rape charges.) The lack of a pass rush early was one of (if not the) top reasons Georgia got carved up by Bryce & Jamo.
Even more perspective: needless to say, tOSU doesn't have the talent to match TTUN on the edges this year. But even when looking at all the top tier DLs we have fielded in recent history, we had never had 1st round talent at both ends. The closest was what, Spence/Bosa, Bosa/Young, or Young/who ever was Young's best sidekick in '19? Between suspensions, injuries, early departures, and flat out underachievement, we could only dream of what TTUN has in '21. (We do get another shot with Sawyer & Tuimoloau in '22/'23).
Now the flip side of Hutchinson/Ojabo being truly generational, is one only have to worry about them (or get to enjoy them as a TTUN fan) once in a generation.
  3. If the Buckeyes lose to TTUN consistently in recruiting. Our '19 class, who are the true juniors on this year's team, was actually ranked lower than TTUN's (based on 247) ... and the rankings were reflected on the field. (Didn't help that it was preceded by the '18 class (Urb's last class BTW, talking about born on 3rd base), which was filled with enough disappointments to warrant its own post or 30 for 30 even.)
I know the Buckeyes had a higher rating per recruit with fewer signees ... but our rating (91.87) was still closer to TTUN (90.78) than it was to say Bama (94.38)/Georgia (93.32). And quantity still matters in a class; quantity means depth. We need any depth first before we can start talking about quality depth. When we have players playing out of position left & right (WR & LB playing TE, RB playing LB, tackles playing guard, etc), it speaks volumes to the roster holes on this team. Moreover, of the 3 5-stars from '19, only Wilson was fire. Harrison (0.9933) & Ojabo (0.8986) can basically switch ratings at this point. Miller was MIA for most of '21; the official word late in the season was injury, but I sure hope he didn't get beat out earlier by Wypler, who didn't exactly make us forget about Josh Meyers. This tips the scale even more in the favor of TTUN.

I disagree. People weren't happy with ole 9-3 Earle. After the tantalizing first year there were going to be three losses each year, so winning the Big Ten was a crapshoot and forget about contending for a national championship.

People are really really erasing what Day did against Clemson back to back years.

I know THE goal is beating Michigan #1 but coaching at the level he did to beat 2019 and 2020 Clemson will handle that way more often than not (and yes 2019 was good enough to beat Clemson, no need to re-hash the 17 things that went wrong).

Also, lets call it what it was…Tressel and Urbs got to beat up some putrid Ttun squads (and even then struggled at times).

Maybe Michigan really is just the #2 team and better than OSU this year. No one wants to accept that. I feel like OSU fans act like it’s our given right to beat them now (Woody willing it should be, but alas…)

edit - I do agree he’s on notice/probation until he gets back in the Win column against Them next year. He losses again and yeah…we need to evaluate. But I’ll give him the time correct it this offseason.

I'll be worried if
  1. Knowles turns out to be a bad hire and the defense doesn't improve.
  2. OSU continues to struggle to run the ball and can't sign top OL recruits.
  3. A veteran '22 team with many returning starters and contributors fails to improve and hit the ground running
  4. TTUN doesn't get an ass whopping
What's done is done. Hopefully OSU beats Utah, but it's obvious many things didn't go right this season and the team was flawed from the start. Given this information, it's not shocking that OSU lost against the best TTUN team in a few decades. I think that needs to be said because some are acting like Day just got upset by a 6-6 team that stumbled through the whole year.

None of the questions people have about Day will be answered until next season. But, IMO, what we saw this past season is an anomaly. You replace the DC 2 games in, the core of your team had to be freshman and sophomores, and said sophomores didn't get a chance to experience The Game because the gutless cowards ducked out last year. I'm excited about next year. A ton of talent is coming back, there's a new DC, and I think improvements will be made in the run game.
