HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Question:
Want to solicit thoughts on potential DC

Do we want an old head that is a technician and not a flight risk in a year or 2 but will stabilize things.

Or do we want a dope younger cat who will be a stud recruiter but is upwardly mobile.

I’m genuinely torn.

I’d prefer the young cat that brings some juice with him. Not sure you will find a Hafley twice, but that’d be pretty sweet. Getting more than 1 year would be nice, which is the concern if he does a bang up job.

My thoughts are ultimately no one gives a singular fuck what “we” want.

My choice would be the first option at this point.

We don’t need another 1 year of a Hafley. We need a decade or so run of a Venables.

A stable, always good/sometimes great defense to complement this golden era of offense we are in. Recruiting will generally take care of itself with the OSU brand and good recruiters for assistants.

Just my preference.

Yep. The reason guys dont develop is they get a different guys perspective every year and cant find their skillset working for them. We need at least 2 good years oif consitency with quality to get back on track and then stay on it

Totally agree

I think that is what Day was looking for in Coombs. For that reason, I think this hire has to have experience as a DC.

I’d assume it’s been said, but if not….

If there were any reservations about Day leaving for NFL, put them to rest, at least for short term.

He doesn’t up-end Knowles to come to Columbus without intention of making OSU elite.

He’s here for at least a few more years, IMO.
I've never been worried about day bolting to the NFL (not suggesting you were accusing me, to be clear) He has never suggested Ohio State was anything but a destination job. I think he loves what he does. I think he has a chip on his shoulder which he is able to control and utilize to his advantage. Meyer called him elite. He didn't say perfect. I'll take elite.

If Knowles is able to get the D to okie state levels and day still commands the offense at a high level..... well. ... I like our chances

I never have, either. Not even sure where that nonsense comes from.

I think it primarily comes from his NFL background and having no real ties to Ohio State prior to coming here. Shoot, I thought the same thing initially. But now that he's here and embedded into the culture (and obviously we'll pay him to stay), I'm much less concerned about Day leaving anytime soon.
