HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Why are we assuming Day is here next year? Chicago is going to be calling..Kelly left ND. Could Day leave for JF and the founding franchise? Crazier things happened last week. No changes in staff yet?

I don’t think Days offense would translate well to the NFC North. Especially Chicago come November/December. I already have concerns about it in the Big 10 come colder/windier weather.

Raiders job would make more sense to me but who knows….I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him go NFL. I just think the Chicago job makes much less sense than others that could be open.

Nothing surprises me anymore though….

I don't get the desire to replace Coach Stu - our OL has consistently been elite, the man coached most of the year after recovering from back surgery, and the issues the OL showed IMO had nothing to do with him but much more the predictability of the offense which is nothing Stu has control over.

If this is the first you are hearing of criticism of Stud then you need to read up. It's in multiple threads and multiple sites. I'm not going to rehash the whole thing but if you think this OL was elite then you and I have very different definitions of the word.

Some nuggets that stood out from his presser courtesy 11W

  1. When asked about his plans for the team's defensive coordinator position, Day says the Buckeyes are focused on the bowl game and focused on recruiting.
  2. Day says that after the Michigan loss, the "No. 1 thing we recognize" is that the team must be able to run the ball and stop the run
  3. Day says the Buckeyes were thin at linebacker at times this year and may be thin at the position moving forward, and that they need to bolster depth at the room
  4. Day says "it's not like we're not capable of not (stopping the run), we are." Day says the Buckeyes must figure out why they couldn't do it against Michigan in particular.
#4: If you really need help figuring it out, here is a clue; because your front 7 got manhandled. Hire coaches who recruit better, develop better and coach better.
#3 : brilliant observation, it is a big part of #2
#2 : "no shit?" "what was your first clue?"
#1 : If you think that 2, 3 and 4 are going to unfuck themselves with the same guys (like you did last year) then you are going to be facing a lot of heat next year and probably aren't the right guy for the job.

Stud is like Milton from Office Space.
I hope he has a soft landing at LSU.
Kelly is struggling. Alas their OL coach might follow him. ND fans say he sucks.

Fields was drafted into that mess. There’s nobody taking that job if they have a good thing going already. Chicago is a mess and until everyone from Virginia down is removed and replaced, it’s a career killer.

I mean, WTF? #2 is the truth since the damn game was invented. Togiai was a badass we know but he was the only one missing from the front this year and that's all it took to let people run all over us? The LBs got better but they are smaller and I'll give Simon and Chambers a pass. Eich got better, especially in the running part of our season. Coaches just aren't recognizing deficiences in how they are using the guys we do have and continue banging their heads against the wall. Thats the worst part of it all.

Thus my lack of confidence in Day to make the right choices to fix this mess.

He's been in the building with all these guys for a couple years now. He should know damn good and well what he's got and who needs to go. Should have known it last year too. Watched all spring, all summer all of fall camp and then Oregon has to happen before he does anything. 9 months or so between Bama debacle and Oregon, hands on the program every day and the head coach doesn't know something is rotten in Denmark?

Maybe he'll knock it out of the park but I'm doubtful at this point.

Yeah….Day knows good coaching. He got burned on Coombs which is understandable. And he also demoted him mid season.

Let’s see if he can land another a Hafley type guy.

I think the criticism is over the top. He basically beat the shit outta Clemson previous 2 years. That’s not an easy feat.

He deserves an opportunity to find the right guy this off-season.

I think Coombs fooled most of us(me included). We all were so ready to welcome him back after his stint in the NFL, thinking he would come back a sage, and add running a defense to his already “hair on fire” personality. Coombs was an easy hire at the time.

I have faith that Day can make good on his next hire, because it also affects his job as well. But this hire ain’t coming until after the season folks. So not sure why people are expecting a hire anytime before the bowl game or ESD. Lock up the 2022 class, win the Rose bowl and then fill positions.

Who said it was the first criticism? This is Ohio State, every coach has received plenty of it and that won't change.

That said - I think you are incorrectly putting blame on Stu when it should go to Day. Stu has consistently developed top talent - and yes, elite talent.

While not the end all be all, PFF would agree and ranks them #1 - https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-offensive-line-rankings-top-10-units-ahead-of-week-11-2021

Do I think they're #1? I can't say, but I can say in The Game Day is the one that put the OL in trouble, not Stu.

Meh, its all coach speak. I wouldn't put an ounce of stock in throwaway Q&A with the media. Also there's definitely work being done behind the scenes regarding the DC position and the defensive coaching as a whole, whether Day says it publicly or not.
